Your preferred sharpening angle on the Sebenza?

Hey guys and gals. Not new to the Sebenza but I will be new to reprofiling it (I will be using my Wicked Edge). I am personally not a fan of convex edges (to me they work great on bigger fixed blade knives but not folding pocket knives for edc). As such I am planning on reprofiling my Sebenza (Large 21 Carbon Fiber). For those of you who sharpen their own Sebenza, what is your preferred angle to sharpen at?

I'm not real hard on my Seb, so I use a 19 deg angle which makes for good slicing. A steeper angle may be preferred for more robust use. I use an Edge Pro.

I use my Sebenzas and Umnumzann for all sorts of stuff. I do mine on the wicked edge at 20 deg. I do not need them screaming sharp but even at 20 deg. they will cut the crap out of things including me. :-) I think it makes the edge a little tougher. I like this thread, thanks.

I re-profiled my 25 and my Large Insigno to between17 and 18 degrees using my Wicked Edge and checking the angle with an angle cube. I then maintain with a quick touch up every couple of months. To touch up I start with the 1000 grit stones lightly before moving to higher grits (sandpaper taped to the stones). Works quick for me.

I go for around 19-20 on my sebenzas, and usually go to 1000k and strop. It produces a nice slicing edge that lasts a decent amount of time.

20 degrees per side just as CRK recommends, I do not mess with micro bevels and such. I have sebenzas that I have carried for years and you can hardly tell they have even been sharpened dozens of times. I use the sharpmaker and know how to use it.

I use a sharpmaker and have had plenty of practice on kitchen knives. No idea what angle I'm getting but I know it's sharp.

18-19 degrees (small margin of error depending on level of focus that day) when I do a full sharpening on my whetstones but if I'm just doing a touch up, I'll give it a few licks down the sharpmaker at 20 dps. Since you have the benefit of using a guided/fixed angle system, give 18 dps a try and see if you like the narrower edge.

p.s. loving that large 21 I got off of you, it's picking up more snail trails every day.

I went to approx. 17-18 dps using Edge Pro (only once)
Anytime the blade is no longer scary sharp, I touch up using shapmaker with ultra-fine rod and stropping

When I used a Sharpmaker, I did 40 inclusive on mine. I use strops and diamond paste now, so there is no real consistent angle. On my first Sebenza with a BG42 blade, I did a 30 deg inclusive edge with an Edge Pro, but I got rid of both the EP and the Sebenza and only have S35VN 21s now. I prefer the edge that comes off the strops freehand to anything I could do with an EP or SM.

As low as possible without edge damage in my uses.

I'm right about here, too. I don't go for a specific angle as I sharpen freehand, but I do go for a slightly "higher bevel" than stock without thinning it out too much. :)

Slightly "higher bevel is exactly what I got going 17 - 18 degrees (17.75 to be precise) using the Wicked Edge.

Good to know I have never taken the effort to measure the angle. I generally don't like a very thin edge on my folders as they see a range of uses. I have a few friends that take things to silly town when sharpening, they are sharp blades but they do lose a robustness I prefer to have. :)

I don't like the silly town but I did take one Manix 2 down to silly levels. It's very sharp but not sure it will last. I did it out of novelty and to test my WE at these silly angles. My CRK at just under 18 degrees seem to have a good combination of sharpness and edge retention.

I have an extremely wide bevel on mine, the side without the stud is easy to sharpen while the side with stud, I have to sharpen with stud hanging on the side of the stone. Wish I could remove the stud for sharpening.... A double stud would be a pain the ass to sharpen...

Humint, I just sharpened the large Sebenza I got from you for the first time. Roughly 36 degrees inclusive on the old stones. Freaky sharp! Not sure how I feel about this steeper angle. It sure slices well. Now I need to see how long it lasts.

That is nice!

Thank you! I just did my small DT at the same angle today.

I still think it's nuts how fine an edge the DT blade takes!
