Your sharpest...???

Hey guys!

As a certified knife knut, my obsession with fine cutlery has led me down the rabbit hole of sharpening.

Im using a guided system with strops and have been getting excellent results as my technique has been improving.

I was elated this evening to find that my latest knife purchase, and freshly sharpened knife is BY FAR the sharpest I have ever had.

I was able to cleanly push cut toilet paper tonight. Not the TP you would find at a turnpike rest stop either, we are talking about the kind that make you think you're sittin on cloud 9...

In my experience, the softer and more "plush" the sh!t ribbon is, the harder it is to cut it cleanly. This stuff generally likes to tear and not cut.

Only a knife guy would have studied TP and how it cuts!

I wasn't on a mission to get to this level of sharpness, its just what my final result wound up at. Partly why I was so excited, I didn't really expect it.

The knife is a ZT 0562 in Elmax steel. I reprofiled the cutting edge back to about 30deg inclusive and then added a 40deg microbevel. I was after a good, durable, and sharp angle for EDC type cutting.

I post his because I am curious to see what your sharpest knives are and how you test them.

thanks fellas-

Drew

I had an Emerson Combat karambit, more of a flashy/cool knife than useful. Crucible 154cm steel, sharpest edge I've ever owned, and it might be due to the chisel grind. The (accidental) test: I pushed my thumb against the edge, barely any pressure or sideways motion at all, and it wedged the skin on my thumb open. As far as standard tests go, just cutting paper or shaving armhair is a good, and you can judge the sharpness off of those.

Can you show your edge pushcutting toilet paper ?
I've never seen anyone do it, only slicing.

eek. I would have no idea or quite frankly time to get a video together and post it.

Heck I was thinking of adding some pics to this and I cant seem to find the time.

I'd love to as I am quite proud of my outcome though!

I'm pretty sure I've seen it here on BF before, I don't think its anything too far outside the realm of possibility!

I remember that one! I try it out on my knives every now and then. I should test it on this ZT 0562 and see what I get....

Pics or it didn't happen
Not a push cut...(but a damned beautiful knife and bevel)

Third example was held from both sides.

Folks, we all want our knives to be the sharpest, but consistency in form makes reliable testing...each of these knives are crazy sharp, but they are not push cutting toilet paper from a singly held side...i have not been able to complete this feat either tho.

@ wazu013: your first link shows slashing, not pushcutting.

This is me slicing a piece of single layer toilet paper with a black ceramic kitchen knife that i sharpened some time ago.
I haven't been able to get it to pushcut the toilet paper.

Unless you edited your post and had something worse earlier, I don't see a problem with what you said. I also agree with the guys who are doubting a TP push cut. I have seen plenty of videos of guys saying they are push cutting TP and without fail the vids always show someone cutting TP with a slicing motion, not push cutting. I believe their doubt is well placed, but if you post a video to prove us all wrong I will happily eat my words. That said, I believe the modified saying goes something like "Video or it didn't happen," lol. :D
