Your sunglasses of choice

Oakley Spikes. Mine are matte black with mirrored lenses. Actually I need to go back in and pay the $80.00 to have the lenses swapped out, mine are chipped up pretty badly. I live down the road from the Oakley factory in Lake Forest, CA, so I go in occasionally to have that done. They replace your frames for free as well.

ANSI impact spec, polarized, frames are practically unbreakable, won't come off running, biking, or doing just about anything else.

I have had oakleys, smith, bolle' and others but after my first pair of Maui Jim's I am ruined!

I had problems with most either breaking or (especially with oakleys) having the coating disintegrate after a year or two from salt air/water & sweat.

Maui Jim's are made for deep sea fishing and there is none better that I have found to this point. The bronze color excel as driving glasses.

Has anyone found a brand that do not scratch all that easy?

I had a pair of Smiths that were glass and they seemed almost indestructable. They fell off my head multiple times riding a bike slidding over 20 feet on concrete and the lenses would be fine (frames would scratch though)

They fell off my head on a 2nd story balcony onto concrete and the lenses were fine (frames cracked but a little super glue did the trick). I finally lost them.

My newest pair are Costa del mar with glass lenses and a 2 foot drop to concrete resulted in about a dozen chips in the glass. Very frustrating when the glasses are practically brand new.

Was thinking of some maui jims but don't know if the glass will hold up. Would go with another pair of smiths but no place around here carries them and glasses are definitely an item that needs to be tried on first.

Any recommendations?

any lenses that are plastic will scratch much easier than glass.

like anything, you have to take care of your gear for it to last. oakley lenses are durable, but will scratch if they are not treated with some care.

i think you were lucky the glass lenses you had didnt break or chip when dropped. since the frames broke, i assume it was the frame that took the majority of the impact. glass wont scratch easily, but will chip or shatter if struck with enough force.

if you are particularly hard on your glasses, and aren't rich, i would suggest some less expensive glasses and just replace them when you break them. otherwise just care for your investment.

Oakley here. I have four pairs, and looking for a fifth. The Bottlecap is a recent favorite, as it fits VERY well on my face and gives me a clear field of vision with nothing in the periphery. I like the Flak Jackets too, but I find the Bottlecap best for every-day usage due to their lack of Unobtanium rubber sleeves and slightly higher comfort level. Besides enjoying active sports I am a rollercoaster fiend and I have not even felt the slightest that they'd come off, even 456 feet in the air.

I ride bike a lot and use WileyX SG-1 for that and for general use also.
Three diferent glasses for diferent conditions, and very good protection against dust, sand, insects or even small stones of other vehicles.

Care to share a review of the actual frames/construction, etc? Do you have the TI or other alloy? I've read that the fangs, when closed, can scratch the backs of the lenses. Any experiences with that? How durable are they?

Thanks.

I'm unhappy with the Gascans, though they are perscripted. They're just not indicative to me of costing over 100$.

I have both maui jims and oakleys (in maui rose and VR28 polarized, gotta love those rose colored lenses :) )and I can say that the maui jim lenses are superior. The Oakleys may have a slight edge in clarity but they lose that advantage as soon as any sunlight gets behind the sunglasses onto your face. With my oakley straight jackets you can see the reflection of sunlight off your face in the lens, and in certain direct glare conditions it makes the lens appear hazy. With the anti glare that maui puts on all their lenses this is almost completely eliminated. Oakley lenses may be a bit more impact resistant but for color and glare the maui jim's are the best I've seen.

I love the Maui Jims except none of their models really fit my face that well. I wear Revo model 3010 which are amber glass polarized, and very comfortable for all day wear. I think the Maui Jim has better glass, but not by much.

I've been wearing the same model of Serengeti (Getaway) for several years. Been through a few pairs. They're discontinued, so they're always way cheaper ($50-65 instead of $150) - at least, until the supply dries up. They're the only ones I've found so far that look good on me and fit me without modification. Glass lenses (I hate plastic--they scratch too easily), and the photochromatic driving lenses change darkness. It's a pretty subtle change (way less than Transition lenses), but it's enough that they're light enough inside, and dark enough outside.

Oakley Gascans for the moment. I need to purchase a high-quality pair of shooting glasses in the foreseeable future, and I'm pretty sure I'll stay with that brand.

That's actually what I bought my Gascan S's for, but I am not so impressed. I'm actually at the mall having to pick them up from the dealer because they had to be sent back. Frames "stretched" to the point that they kept sliding right off my face when I looked down. And no, I never put them on my head, always in the cloth bag.

That's good to know, GatMan. I haven't used them on the range yet, but I'm really satisfied with them as regular sunglasses so far.
I definitely want easily exchangeable lenses in a pair of shooting glasses, that's why I want something other than the Gascan for that purpose. I think I'll pick up the M-Frame sooner or later.

Just a thought, have you looked at the Wiley-X Romer II glasses? They come with 3 different lenses and are fairly easy to swap out from what I hear.

QS,

My brother GentleBen got himself a pair of M-Frames with 2 pairs of lenses on LEO discount, and likes them a lot. He got them for a very good price.

XD45,

I did extensive research when I went to buy mine and tried a lot of the WileyX's. I was NOT impressed with build quality or materials. They felt VERY flimsy, and highly overpriced. In doing web-research, I saw a lot of people singing their praises, but then found a couple reviews that likened them to dollar-store quality. The latter opinion supported my own experience. If you own a pair, it would be good to get a little review.

I wasn't okay spending the money then, but if I had to do again, I'd look for a pair of Rudy Projects that appeal t me aesthetically. Those glasses screamed quality.

If one doesn't mind spening $130-275, Rudy Project glasses seem to be a good purchase.
