As long as I was able to hand load it, gimme a Mauser 98 in 30/06.
I can load it down to .30 US levels for small game or crank it for anything with 4 legs.
An 03 Springfield would be second.
Reliability is the name of the game and these guys always win that contest.

My first choice for a longarm would be a 12 gauge, but you did say a rifle.
I love '98 Mausers, and for awhile I used to collect them . This one is my favorite user. She isn't fancy or pretty, in fact she was butchered by her prior owner. But I have at the very least sent two thousand rounds downrange with her.
Not exactly a squirrel or rabbit rifle, but she hits where I aim. And I know she won't fail me.

I'd say my Glenfield/Marlin Mod. 60 in .22lr on the left. It's from 1970 or 72 I think and has an 18 round capacity.
These are all I've got and the marlin is scoped now. Thinking about picking up a Finnish M39 but maybe just a plain ole' 91/30 Mosin.

Ruger 10/22. Lightweight and reliable gun, with lightweight and available ammo. Good for small or medium game, and self defense.

I've never shot it before, but I've fired guns similar and AKs in 7.62X39, so I'd go with the SKS with a medium power reddot scope, enough power to take out a deer or something like a deer or elk at least 100 yards and a monte carlo stock for the elements.
If not that, then I'd go with my rem 770 in .270.

You guys are missing the point.
RELIABILITY and ease of ammo are the game in a SHTF or TEOTWAWKI scenario.
Re loadable shells and the stuff to do it, is imperative and parts for maintaining or breakage will be non existent.Could be.
Marlin this, 700 Rm, 1100, and 30/30 that absolutely do not fit that movie unless you are a machinist or serious craftsman.
Neither do the rimfires, which are my favorite guns in the world.
You want something as reliable as a sledge hammer with a welded on handle
in a caliber you can ' attain" if it comes to that.
A 308 would probably be easier but the 06 can use the powder an bullets you " collect"
The problem is a 308 rifle is normally not available in the guns I recommended.
I want an ANVIL, without totally breaking the bank.:thumbup:

I used a .22 bsa sportingmans 5 bolt action ... with no magazine , but a block of wood pounded into where it was once to convert it to a singleshot , used it for 3 yrs when I had no job , it fed me and my grand dad and my dog . Cost me a carton of beer . It was only a single shot but it taught me the value of placing that shot so it didnt need a follow up .
At the moment , I dont have a gun , but a 70 pound compound bow ( downgraded from the 90 due to having back injuries that was getting agrevated by shooting it. )

Although I've never handled one, I think a Savage model 24, 12 gauge/.22 lr would be a versatile, simple, durable gun that could harvest just about anything in North America, and takes common ammo.
If I was choosing from what I have here at home, it would be a Ruger 10/22 (since that's all I've got in a long gun at the moment . . . ).

Mine is a savage 24. The configuration I purchased is .223 on top and 20ga on the bottom. Shoots like a champ, steel plates out to 200 yards no problem.
I went with the .223 because of the high availability and low cost (at the time) and the ability to take down just about anything in North America. 20ga for the decent size pattern and less weight than a 12ga if I had to carry the ammunition with me.
I would recommend it...VERY solid gun, albeit a little heavy. It does break down and would fit in a larger backpack no problem.

No doubt in my mind. A .22 cal single shot rifle. You ain't going to live by shooting game. You will have to trap it. You will be way to busy cutting firewood, building a shelter, purifying drinking water, etc to sit at a game trail and hope something comes by that doesn't smell you first. The rifle is only for targets or opportunity while out walking the trap line or around the camp.
You can walk into the woods with enough 22 cal ammo for years to come. You will never carry enough large caliber ammo to protect yourself for very long. The zombies are relentless. Your plan has to be to find a spot so out of the way you will not be bothered. If you are surviving in bear country you may have to add a large caliber pistol.
Now if I had the time to set up my spot I might take my 50 cal muzzle loader too. Again simple mechanism will allow for years of use without repair needed.
Complicated mechanisms like a AR15s requires a lot of cleaning and maintaining. You need weapons with high firepower during war. However that level of maintenance is a liability when just trying to survive.

I'm kind of one of the out of the loop kids.

Third, I guess, would be one of my Mosin Nagants. I've hunted with them for years and years. They are powerful, reliable as a hammer, accurate, and ammo is still (fairly) cheap. I have beaucoup ammo already and even with the primer shortage going on these days, enough reloading supplies to load 1000 more rounds. With the Hornady SSTs now available in .312, I have a very good hunting round.
Small game would be trapped/snared so i have little need for just a rimfire.
If I could find one, a Savage 24C in either 12 or 20 ga over .22mag would make a fine choice.
