Your Traditional Knife of the Year 2022 (Easy Tiger! Read the rules first! ;) )

This year is the easiest pick ever. I bought two of the gec 35 cattle knives when they came out back in august, one for the collection and one to use. I haven’t given much thought to knives this year, so this one has just stayed in my pocket with little interest rotating others. It just works and I’m fine with that for now. A very sturdy cattle knife that has served my needs well and something I can appreciate using and looking at. It has gained nice character from these months in use.

That was my second place knife. Such a great knife!

Mine has to be the one most recently given to me for Christmas this year from my father. He has drawn a picture of my papaw Edwards leaned up in the background with his old company car sitting out front. He used to repair radios and old tvs with tubes for people back in the day. What better knife to capture the spirit of this picture and his business than the GEC radio jack. This knife is defiantly my favorite for the entire 2022 year! View attachment 2026974
Really cool 😎😊👍
Most likely this:

I wanted a good quality but inexpensive damascus bladed knife with interesting wood. I got a German Boker barlow damascus but did not feel like using it as the pattern looked too pretty to lose, so I went further down their range.

It does take a bit of looking after to maintain the pattern, but nothing extreme. Cuts well and looks good, holds an edge, easy to clean..

Honourable mention goes to the RR reserve trapper.
Nice one 🙂👍

I am pretty enamored with this Saddlehorn in CV, but it's just a wee bit small for my everyday uses. I do enjoy the weight balance and unique blades, but it's still runner-up.

This large Stockman really is a great pocket companion, and is a nice size to get work and play done, and my first choice.16291875-869D-495C-AD55-CB7235F83761.jpeg

Great thread, Jack. Always fun reading. Can't participate myself, as I have only acquired one knife in 2022. Mostly what has been in my pocket this year is a Victorinox Spartan or an Opinel No. 8, both acquired in previous years. Maybe next year. Been eyeing some stilettos....

This Browning...JB you mentioned the term "on yer bike" well mate that is harsh because its reminding me of how I got on my bike and rode up a big hill a few weeks ago...and buggered my sciatic nerve...oh the pain...several rare GECs wirth of chiropractor visits later Im almost back to normal...which brings me in my usual way to the knife of 2022...the difficulty of obtaining GEC product lead me to trawling ebay.
I found this thing intriguing ..with its twin lock back ...never seen anything quite like it...stilk working on the technique of looking like I know what Im doing when closing it...Cheers and All The Best for 23.

Blimey mate, that's rotten! I'm glad you're healing OK, it's a terrible thing :( That double-locker is quite fascinating, I think the only double lock-backs I've seen before are these (in various forms, including Parker brands), made in Japan in the 60's and 70's

I was hoping to post a pic of one I gave away here! :D But I can't find a pic! :( It had two blades, one at each end, bit like a Muskrat, but smaller. Interesting little knife. I did a quick image search, but didn't find anything. I did, however, find some Japanese-made knives similar to your own, marked Khyber

The three that got use . 19 was a failed attempt to replace my lost 25 sheep. Put the 59 in action because I need more stag. The lambs foot was a gift from Dan (SF fanatic) who kindly sent me this second to try out . It’s got gaps and the wood is split some . Otherwise, it’s pretty solid and has been filling in for the 25. All things considered, the lambs foot is my knife of the year . Thanks Dan !6EB82C0C-A4A5-4F90-84FC-BBDE3E102F75.jpeg

This was (still is, he’s 99) my Dad’s work knife. He just moved from assisted living to a nursing home. Going through his things, I found this. Haven’t seen it in years, but remember him using it around the shop. She’s rough, but a keeper!
You Case xperts can probably date it, I don’t think it’s that old…but it’s my KOTY25A18D56-3067-4E31-A2D0-CC86BFCAFCC1.jpegF5F605CB-9A12-42B7-AE85-C75FA3EB3E13.jpeg
edit: 1980 - 1989 just looked her up

Wow, that's special

Where did y’all find those A wright lambsfoots? (if this is in violation of forum rules i apologize)

For my KOTY, the winner comes from a pool of 3 nominees.

The honorable mention goes to this Case Trapper with mammoth tooth covers. I got this on the exchange here and find it stunning and lovely in every way. However, it is not eligible for KOTY since I have never carried it. I don't know if this qualifies as a "grail" for me, but I am scared to mess up the covers in any way. It's too beautiful. I hope the picture does it justice.

The runner-up is this Case swayback. I got this from JohnDF JohnDF 's Case Pass-Around. It certainly qualifies as it has gotten plenty of pocket time and caught my attention and affection.

But the swayback, unfortunately just could not compete with the GEC 23 I got in a trade (also here on BF), which earns the title of Knife of the Year for me!
For me, it is just about the perfect size (I do have monstrously large hands), and most notably, I think this may take and hold an edge better than any knife I've ever owned (and I have a bunch of knives with blades of modern "super-steels."
The guy I traded with included this real neat belt holster I do not believe this came from GEC, but it fits the 23 perfectly. However, I've used it only once or twice.

I look forward to this thread every year. It’s a great porch tradition and fun to see everyone’s favorites.

I’ve never contributed to this thread in the past because I tend to like to carry a variety of knives and I’ve never had a single knife that has changed that. But this year was different. I finally found a knife that I wanted to carry all the time. This year was actually a big knife year for me, I think I got 6 knives. I got a rough rider barlow with bone stag handles. It’s a cool little knife that I do carry and use, but not my knife of the year. I also got my first two Sheffield knives this year, a large rosewood lambsfoot and a rosewood ettrick. They both make great work knives and see a lot of use but neither are my knife of the year.
For Christmas last year I got a Boker Brook fixed blade. It’s a very cool knife that I have used a lot and I really like. It’s a close contender but I don’t carry it enough to be my knife of the year.

Another close contender was a 70s Case pen knife that was given to me by JohnDF JohnDF when we met up to fish. Not only is it a great knife but it is a reminder of his generosity and the fun day we had fishing (and it came in one of his nice slips). It sees a lot of pocket time, but not my knife of the year.

The winner was an easy choice for me. It’s my Case/Bose eureka jack. Easily the most I’ve spent on a knife, but it’s noticeably nicer than anything I have. I had wanted that knife since it first came out but thought it was out of my price range. When I saw it on a huge discount, I had to go for it. It was everything I hoped it would be. The two blades are handy for just about everything and it’s really well made. I don’t carry it every day because I still like some variety but I’m always drawn back to it quickly. If someone told me a year ago that my favorite/most carried knife would be a Case I wouldn’t have believed it. Here I am and my top 2 are Cases. We’ll see if something can knock it out this year.

Thanks for doing the thread again, Jack and enjoy your trip.
Bart, If I was a betting man, I'd have bet that the Eureka Jack would be your favorite for 2022! It was my favorite last year, and still by far my favorite to carry!

Finally getting some time to catch up on this thread. Great choices folks! Thanks for the fun Jack Jack Black Jack Black !
