Your Traditional Knife of the Year 2022 (Easy Tiger! Read the rules first! ;) )

Looking back on 2022 knife purchases, I had a pretty remarkable year.

February brought an Mount of Olives Olive Wood 77 barlow:

In May I acquired a really nice Bruckmann (the #15 I have had for more than this year):

In August I acquired an almost unattainable (for me, anyway) 77 Harness Jack:

In September I was able to buy a GEC 35 -- a pattern I had and foolishly let go of only to find myself wanting to have it back. What's better is that I got @glennbad to put some gnarly stag on it!

Finally, in October I order the Forum knife, which recently arrived:

All of these knives are special for different reasons. As a Christian, having a knife with olive wood handles from the Mount of Olives is doubly cool, since Jesus Christ spent time on the Mount of Olives throughout his ministry. The Bruckmann is the same pattern as one I sold to Glenn and I am glad to have found another one in as good, if not better condition as it is a really cool knife and a useful pattern, and Bruckmann knives have an interesting provenance if you dig into it at all. The 77 Harness Jack is such a great looking knife, and hard to come by, so I feel very privileged to have one. The Forum knife is always a pleasure to have, and this pattern is one I really like in size, shape, and blade style. It's a real winner and one that I think we should all feel grateful to have (who have one) since last year's process left such a bad taste in many folks' mouths.

But of all these knives, I think I'm most excited to have and have carried the recovered GEC #35 Churchill. It is a great pattern, very nice to have in the pocket, very useful, and with this wonderful stag is a pleasure to look at as well. I've carried it more since I've had it than any other knife for this year. It is my knife of the year for 2022.

Great choice Joshua 😎🙂👍
Let’s get the Bunny Knife upfront and out of the way. It’s probably the finest quality knife I’ve acquired this year and I’m very happy to own it, but it’s still got 2 blades. Close but no cigar.View attachment 2024254
There’s the brass figural knife from Couperier du Coursolle. I’ve carried and used it fairly often so it’s in consideration but it falls short too.View attachment 2024255
Next we have the Tom Bullard custom that I picked up off the exchange recently which in the long run will end up being my favorite.View attachment 2024256
The tater skin Rough Ryder linerlock work knife is smaller than I normally prefer but it’s found it’s way into my pocket on a daily basis just for its every day practicality, but it lacks the all important what if category.View attachment 2024257
Last but first is the aluminum bodied Laguiole from Arbalete and G. David. It may not be the most practical user but it makes up for that with its superb aesthetic. It shines with food and as a show off piece. The 2022 KOTY 🏆View attachment 2024258
So there we have knives that cover the full spectrum of my needs. There’s no predicting ahead of time which one would become my KOTY which is why I look forward to this thread each year. Thanks Jack Jack Black Jack Black
Very interesting choice my friend 😎 It's a pleasure, as always it's been great to see everyone's picks 🙂👍
This year is the easiest pick ever. I bought two of the gec 35 cattle knives when they came out back in august, one for the collection and one to use. I haven’t given much thought to knives this year, so this one has just stayed in my pocket with little interest rotating others. It just works and I’m fine with that for now. A very sturdy cattle knife that has served my needs well and something I can appreciate using and looking at. It has gained nice character from these months in use.

It's great when a choice is that simple 😎🙂👍

My knife collecting and acquiring slowed down quite a bit this year, but of those that came my way this year, there were three that were head and shoulders above the rest. Perhaps these knives mean more to me than they would have if I had simply purchased them from a dealer or somewhere on the secondary market as they came from fellow Porch members.

First up, and second runner up, is a knife that would have been have likely been a koty in any other year. This 77 sawcut Yankee Barlow showed up in my mailbox one day as a surprise from JonMcD JonMcD and has spent quite a bit of time in my pocket since then.

Runner up for this year for me is a knife that has had a polarizing, with nearly everyone either strongly disliking it or strongly liking and few in between. This jigged bone Bayou Trapper showed up in a box from Modoc ED Modoc ED a few months ago. There isn't much these two blades can't do and I find myself reaching for it more and more as time goes on.

My knife of the year for 2022 is not even a knife that came out this year, but it is a knife that took until this year to finally get my hands on. I got this 15 Sepia Sawcut Barlow earlier this year from BDubbs BDubbs and was immediately taken with it. It has spent more time in my pocket and in use than any other knife throughout the course of the year.

Honorable mention go out to these two knives, which are no slouches either. Thanks Matt_WY Matt_WY and JohnDF JohnDF .

It’s an easy decision for me, the knife that takes me back to my childhood.

Very cool 😎👍

Nice 🙂😎👍

This is the only knife that came my way this year. It is a gift from a very good friend in a classic pattern I love. I am fairly certain that it will be final addition to my small 54 collection.
I don't get much chance to carry a knife any longer. but will be using this one on the rare occasions that I do.

Without any doubt this is the ONE for me for this year and most likely for years to come!

I requested an "S" model so I wouldn't feel "off" putting her to work. Even carved my initials into the bone!!!

Dave

it is interesting to see how that one wears! although I love adding smooth bone knives to the collection, but I tend not to carry them because of the wear on the smooth bone. Also wasnt aware there were Ss of those!

This was the year of the tear-drop pattern for me. I had an acrylic GEC 85 recovered in black ash, by David Valdivisio. This was the first time I’ve ever had tried more customized knives. I was totally stoked to see how this one turned out. I have carried this one a fair amount, but not nearly as much as the next one...

My favorite knife of the year award has to go to this Camillus I picked up from Augie Augie this summer. It is in great condition, but it does have enough wear on it that I have no problem letting it bang around in my pocket.

Travis, really glad you enjoy that knife so much, it is a beauty. Great to see it out being used and not sitting on a shelf collecting dust. Merry Christmas.

I am going to say that this Case XX ten dot 1970 Large Folding Hunter, model 6165 SAB, has to be my knife of the year. A lot of my Case Redbones are from the same era and particularly, I have tried to collect the ten dots from 1970, which was the first year of the yearly tang markings. I had, for maybe the last 20 years, always wanted the SAB Hunter and almost bought a modern one maybe ten years ago, but, eventually passed because I wanted an older one with the carbon blade. I found this one this year and loved it when it arrived in pristine condition. Wood nice and tight to the bolsters, centered blade, double pinned shield, and opens and closes with a lot of authority. I thought it was a bit sad that a stout knife like that had never been used or carried.

I forced a patina on the blade, soon afterwards. I toted it around in my back pocket for a few weeks and left it out on the table to admire for a few months. Eventually, I put it in a drawer with my other knives, but, after a few days I found I missed it. I retrieved it and laid it on the sideboard table, where I often leave my current daily carry knives. It is there today and I often just drop it in my back pocket, before I go on my daily walks. I hardly ever carry it the whole day though. If any knife I have found qualifies, then I suggest this one does. 😊

Primble's Knife of the Year for 2022:

I went back and forth on this one, I have been blessed with lots of new “toys” this year and it was a difficult decision! After all the pondering, this was the winner!
Looks like a great choice Ernie 🙂👍

Mine has to be the one most recently given to me for Christmas this year from my father. He has drawn a picture of my papaw Edwards leaned up in the background with his old company car sitting out front. He used to repair radios and old tvs with tubes for people back in the day. What better knife to capture the spirit of this picture and his business than the GEC radio jack. This knife is defiantly my favorite for the entire 2022 year! Most likely this:

I wanted a good quality but inexpensive damascus bladed knife with interesting wood. I got a German Boker barlow damascus but did not feel like using it as the pattern looked too pretty to lose, so I went further down their range.

It does take a bit of looking after to maintain the pattern, but nothing extreme. Cuts well and looks good, holds an edge, easy to clean..

Honourable mention goes to the RR reserve trapper.
