Porch traditions come in many forms, and with Randy glocktenman glocktenman posting his very generous annual giveaway thread, I figured it was time to post this year's YOUR Traditional Knife of the Year thread. It's been going on a lot of years now, so you older posters know the score. For everyone else, it's YOUR Traditional Knife of the Year, not THE Traditional Knife of the Year, and there can be only ONE, so if you can't choose, you don't have a KNIFE of the year. If you do, please tell us about it :)

there-can-be-only-one.jpg.webp

Here's the deal from last year's thread, with the year updated:

In 2024, if you’re lucky, you may have bought, found, or been given, an EXCEPTIONAL knife. Maybe it was a knife you didn’t think was going to be that special, but it has absolutely CHARMED you. Perhaps it was an inexpensive knife, which you picked up somewhere, slipped in your pocket, and then found you couldn’t stop carrying it. It must be a knife you have gotten on or since Christmas Day 2023. If you’ve come across a knife like that, perhaps you’d like to nominate it as YOUR knife of the year.

Now, it could be that you’ve been perfectly happy carrying the knife you bought or were given many years ago, a knife which has served you so well, why would you want to change? If that’s the case, good luck to you my friend, but that knife doesn’t qualify.

It could be that you’ve had lots of knives this year, and liked many of them, but none of them really stood out. Don’t worry, maybe something will come along next year, which will absolutely knock your socks off. You can tell us about that knife next year.

Also, and we always get a couple of these, you may be one of those indecisive folks who just can’t make your mind up. Maybe you have two, or three, or four knives you really like, and can’t decide which you like the best. If that applies to you, feel free to start another thread, because if ONE of those knives doesn’t stand out, it doesn’t deserve to be nominated for this one. By all means mention a number of knives, but in the end, YOU MUST CHOOSE ONE. If you can’t…on yer bike! ;)

It gets worse, there’s no prize for this, and there’s no winner! :D We’re just talking knives, and telling each other which single knife has made all the difference to us this year :)

So, we're not looking for the fanciest custom you picked up this year, we're looking for a knife that you've CARRIED, that has absolutely hogged your pocket in a way which may have taken you by surprise. Don't worry if you can't choose one, you're not being asked to choose your favourite child, just sit back and read the posts, and maybe you'll find a knife to nominate next year

This is supposed to be fun, so have a good think, and enjoy posting :) I hope that 2024 has been a good year for you, and that 2025 is equally kind

I'll post my own contribution in due course ;)

My favorite annual thread!

I have a Knife Of The Year, but it doesn't meet your strict guidelines, simply because it is too big to fit in a pocket. It's been living rent free in my head however, and earlier this year I was able to make it a reality.

BTW Manuel I still want you to build me a stag and 52100 criollo. I'll drop you a line when I'm ready.

The maker I initially had in mind no longer frequents these parts, yet somehow the forum still found a way to provide and I was able to commission my knife with another excellent smith. After more than a decade, I finally have my stag puñal.

I've just been looking through the knives that have come my way this year, often through incredible generosity, and after a while I realised there are just too many to mention here, so while very grateful for the kindness I've been shown, I'm going to limit it to 3, each of which is an incredible story of generosity in its own right.

These past few years, since 2019, I've struggled with this thread, because of having such a strong attachment to my beloved Hartshead Barlow.

While I still carry this knife regularly, at least once a week. For the very first time, it has had serious competition for my pocket, all from other Lambsfoot knives.

In March or April, I had a mild stroke, and had to take a bit of time off. My pals in the Guardians, the greatest guys you could want to meet, clubbed together to commission a knife from Italy's finest Lambsfoot maker, Cosimo Del Bendetto. I was absolutely overwhelmed by the kindness of this gesture, and my Pals Lambsfoot is a knife I will always hold dear, as an example of the great friendships I've made here on The Porch :)

Some years ago, when the wonders of the Lambsfoot were still a mystery to many folks here, I commissioned a series of SFOs, starting with the 2017 Guardians Lambsfoot knife

After 2 more Guardians knives, and a number of other Lambsfoot SFOs, that project came to an end in 2019. Since then, interest in the Lambsfoot pattern has exploded, and the Guardians thread has gone from strength to strength, but we have not had a 'Club Knife' of our own. My friend Barrett btb01 btb01 was determined to try and realise one, and thankfully Eric Albers, who has produced some absolutely incredible Lambsfoot knives, agreed to help. The result was a gorgeous-looking knife with vintage Micarta covers. And they wouldn't let me pay for mine! My heartfelt thanks to all these fine gentlemen, particularly Eric and Barrett :)

And that might well be where this post ended, except for Generous Bob - Rufus1949 Rufus1949 ! Bob is a legend here, and he offered to sponsor a Lambsfoot of my specifications, made once again by Cosimo De Bendetto. I put in a lot of thought, before I put my ideas to Cosimo, who despite not speaking English, is extremely helpful, and easy to communicate with. I decided I wanted a Lambsfoot with a Triple Rattail front bolster, and ram's horn covers, with everything made from carbon steel. I hoped this would work, and Cosimo's work exceeded my expectations, the weight, the feel of this knife in the hand, the dimensions of the blade, the feel of the horn, everything about it is a joy, and I think it is stunning to look at. For the first time since 2019, I have another knife I am struggling not to carry every day. I call the knife L'Ariete, and it is MY Traditional Knife of the Year 2024 :) Many thanks to Bob and to Cosimo for putting it in my hands

Wishing you all a very happy 2025, and may you find YOUR Traditional Knife of the Year 2025 :)

A wonderful knife Christian, and it certainly qualifies as YOUR Traditional Knife of the Year - it doesn't have to a be a folder

Can’t wait to see everyone’s picks. For me, this is an easy answer. A great knife, from a great knife maker, celebrating a group I enjoy being a part of. I’d like to think I’m a pretty simple guy, and I appreciate that this is not a flashy knife even though it’s exceedingly well-finished. Even though I’ve only owned this one for about four months, it’s already in my top-three most carried pocketknives (yes, I’m a weirdo and track that data😅).

Anyways, the Albers Lambfoot GL-24 is my 2024 knife of the year. Just happens to be in my pocket today so I snapped this quick picture.

L'Ariete is a wonderful, spectacular KOTY, Jack!! Not only Knife Of The Year, but Knife Of Any Time!!!
Thanks for starting this fun thread again!!
Mine, without question, is My City Stock!! It's been in my pocket since they were shipped to me!!! I've wanted to make this pattern for many years; it's not new, but fairly rare over the decades, and it performs as intended in every way!! And, though a new knife this year, it looks and feels like a beloved antique!!KOTY 1.jpgWith a single spring, it is light and easy to carry in the pocket, but sturdy for every occasion !!
My KOTY for sure!!!

I had many great knives that in any other year would have taken the cake.

I was fortunate to get my first albers thanks to btb01 btb01 Barrett and the guardians group. It’s really grown on me as one of my favourite lambs.
IMG_5488.jpeg

As a lover of the lambs I also received a very special gift from the great man Bob Rufus1949 Rufus1949 . I really love the F&F, W&T and overall feel of this Daniel’s. I carry it often.
IMG_5433.jpeg

My first waynorth waynorth thanks to Charlie’s generosity. From looks to function the city stock has become one of my favourite knives to use and carry out of my whole collection.

But for me the king cup (as my boys would call it) goes to this one.

My dog and best mate died of cancer last year and I wanted to do something special to remember her by. Ellie was a hunting dog and the antler for this knife came from the first deer I shot over her.
We’d been hunting the fringe of a mountain range without seeing any sign of deer. I’d given up for the day and started eating an apple, while she wandered off sniffing in the opposite direction of where I wanted to go. I called to her but she was resistant to come back. I decided to follow her for a while but over hard cracker ground I couldn’t make out any sign. After a ways I stopped and as I said to her “mate there’s nothing here” I looked down and at my feet was red hot droppings. Not surprising I let her lead the way and it became one of the greatest days hunting I’ve had with about 6 red stags roaring around me and culminating in shooting this one at 20 yards. It ticked over a year ago last week that we lost Ellie or ‘Moo’ as we called her but it feels like yesterday. She’s that once in a lifetime dog and I love so much to be able to keep a momento of our time together with me. What knife could beat that?

Wonderful, but sad story; what a beauty Jack

In spite of only receiving a couple dozen knives in 2024 it has been a cracker jack of a year for me. Several different knives which I have sought after for years came to roost in 2024, making it a very memorable one. Here are the contenders:

Honorable Mention
Schrade commemorative Trail of Tears knife. I have wanted one of these ever since I first saw a picture of one, and finally landed one at a reasonable price.
NeXu5Q5.jpeg

2nd Runner-up
Another grail knife acquired this year, the Albers Lambsfoot in Blue Rope jigged bone. Any other year this would have been my KOTY, but has been surpassed by the surpassing generosity of several of our members here.
BDTXAVX.jpeg

1st Runner-up
A most generous gift from Modoc ED, 1 of only 5 made, an A. Wright & Son Lambsfoot in wonderful stag with Damascus blade. Truly a very special knife from a very special member. I carry this one often!
UxfL1YW.jpeg

Knife of the Year
Another incredibly generous gift, this time from Barret (btb01) and Eric Albers. I am the most gracious recipient of the one and only Albers GL-24 Lambsfoot in Cranberry Relish jigged bone. I cannot overstate how much I cherish this beautiful and desirable lambsfoot, and it is no safe-queen. Carried and enjoyed!

To have such fine knives and chose only one, great choice Jeff.

My 2024 KOTH is this small elephant toe by Terry Davis. What makes it so fun is the size. It’s just 2 1/2” closed with 1 3/4” main blade, so it easily fits in the watch pocket of my jeans and despite its diminutive size the blades are easily deployed. It’s a small & stout daily companion!

Happy 2025 to all my Porch brothers!

It seems, there is more than the knife itself, in our choices. There is an untouchable human factor, that takes center stage.
I apologize to all of my friends who enriched my collection with their generosity. I treasure each one and I carry them with pride.
But one stands out this year. It was created before I was welcomed to the porch, but is new to me.
No more rambling, it is my horn lamb from Jack Black.

I'm honoured Bob :)

My KOTY is most definitely Charlie’s City Stock. It has beaten out even my fixed blade purchases and moderns purchases.
I’m so very thrilled to have one and to use it without reservation. I’m a thin knife, single spring fan, so this one takes the cake in 2024.

I haven't had time to browse the forum as much, this year, so I kind of missed Charlie's thread, but I'm so glad he was able to get these made, and that we're seeing them here :)
First I was in doubt, but when I read

it was all clear to me.

This long-desired Bull Buster is definitely it. Even though it came absolutely dull, the fact I did put in it some work just added to it's value to me.View attachment 2732262
Another decisive choice :) Congratulations Alex
