Your weirdest woods encounter

Parties have been warned. Please stop the mudslinging and get back on track.

Down in the keys, there were plenty of odd things. An abandoned truck trailer, a whole mobile home out in the middle of NO WHERE, a giant cement truck holder. I'll see if I can wrangle up some pics.

I've come across a few things in the middle of nowhere and had no idea how it got there. I was once about 4 miles into a hike on a single track trail when we came across a refridgerator. People go through a lot of work to dump crap...

Maybe in the keys it came from a hurricane?

No real good scary weird stories here.

But a friend and I in high school were riding our offroad bikes (motorcycles) through the woods, and being teenagers, going way too fast through way too narrow spaces between trees.

I was in the lead, and I see this big flash of green in front of me, I yank hard left and just about dump the bike, and I hear a metallic "WHAM". My friend ran into it.

"It" was a dumpster. Looked brand new, clean green paint, brand new looking waste company logo, out int he middle of the woods. These weren't small trees, either, I don't think anyone of them could have been less than 20 years old.

So how did it get out there, and who was keeping it in pristine condition? I dunno.

This isnt really a weird encounter as it is a scary ecounter. A couple a buddies and myself were hiking around some woods, scouting out some good fishing places in the local ponds. this place is pretty remote and ive only seen other people out there a handful of times and ive been going there for years! theres a dirt road that leads back to where we parked and it was getting dark so we headed back. By the time we were nearing the end of the dirt road the sun was all the way down and i saw a car at the end of the road. I didnt think to much of it but i didnt want to walk up on something i shouldnt just in case so we stopped and listened first. It was 3 guys i think but i couldnt hear what they were saying. they were about 40 feet from me with some pretty thick underbrush in between so i couldnt see them clearly. their car was running still and i think i cuold make out a door open so i figured they would leave soon so we stayed put. this was our only way back to the car so we didnt really have a choice. the talking stopped and out of nowhere there were about 15-20 gunshots. from the sound of it i guessed it was a .22 pistol. we flopped on our bellies where we were and could hear bullets hitting trees all around us. this place was right on the edge of the city limits but still inside them so guns arent permitted so thats never really been a concern of mine...until now! the shots stopped and we hauled ass the way we came and started trecking through the brush and swamp till we find our truck 30 min. later. we drove back to where the car was on our way out and there was no one there. there wasnt any blood or anything so i think it was just some kids shooting off a few rounds. It could have ended bad for anyone of us so im very thankful to this day no one was hurt.

I actually have 3 such stories to tell. The first happened on the farm in the garden. We were weeding as a family and all of a sudden we hear our springer spaniel screaming bloody murder. We look over and see her with her face buried in the dirt. My mom runs over and grabs the dog and pulls on her head and can't move her!! Meanwhile the dog is still screaming, and my mom (a farm girl) can't lift up a 40# dog!?! Finally the dog wrenches loose, with a couple of SMALL marks in her nose with a trickle of blood. Still to this day don't know what would hold a 40# dog into the ground with a full grown woman pulling on her and not rip open the soft nasal tissue.

As I said I grew up on a farm, and because home life was not the best I spent every spare moment in the bush. Only once did I ever feel scared. We were on our way to a stucco job when one of our dual back tires blew out. We stopped to change it and before we started I decided to go for a leak in the woods just off of the highway. I only made it maybe 2' into the woods before a feeling of dread came over me like I have never experienced before. I got the hell out of there, went back to the truck and told the guys. OF course they ridiculed me (I was just out of high school) but when I stood up to them and told them to go where I went surprisingly they did not want to go. They knew what kind of level head I have and that I had already spent more time in the bush than both of them put together (both in their 30's). I've gone back once to that spot and did not feel anything, but something really did not want me to go there that day.

The last thing (OK there's more but these are the best- the others involve planes flying straight at my house and stuff) was our last ever trip to the Lake Lot that we had owned forever after my mom sold it. It was me and my now wife, and one of my groomsmen. We were just chilling out by the fire, somewhat around midnight, and my girlfriend asked what that was? WE turn to where she was pointing and see some lights in the trees. Odd, but we thought that it might be a squirrel or something looking at the fire. Strange thing is we saw it start moving about where there were no branches. Ok so maybe it was a bat or something. But the lights were hanging in midair, and occasionally blinking on and off (we do not have lightening bugs or fireflies or anything else up here). As I am a curious guy (biology major and all) I got up to see what it could be. The lights rose as I got closer, but.... there was nothing there when I shone my flashlight on them! I turned off the flashlight and they came back- sometimes in the trees, sometimes in the spaces between the branches that we could see through in the darkness. This lasted for a while but every time we shone a light there was nothing there. WE moved around the clearing to get different views and we all saw "them" from all angles and distances but could never see anything and we have no clue to this day what they were.

My wife has a strange reflex whenever something supernatural is talked about or experienced and she asked me to post it here. She tears up like crazy (you should see the pile of kleenex on the arm of her couch right now). She loves the subject but just tears like crazy (not crying but tearing if that makes sense)! Do any of you or anybody that you know of get this? (I tell her that it is a reflex to flush out all of the evil spirits that are trying to get into her brain.).

Cool subject that just shows that there are many things out there that we will probably not ever figure out, and I love that!!!

Please excuse the recent distraction. Those posts have been moved elsewhere. Now let's get back to the weird woods. :)

You know, now that you mention weird things in Florida swamps... I used to do weekend trips into the swamps and tropical woods around Eglin AFB. I've found everything from crashed WWII bombers to 60 junked tanks... in the middle of the freakin swamp.

It was hot out, and being stuck in the bilge of my boat tracing a short to the VHF didn't add to the enjoyment of the day, The warm fuzzy feeling I was getting was nothing more than sweat and stray voltage.

I live a mile from anything paved, surrounded by woods, there are some hiking/ horse/ biking trails in the adjacent forest. So essentially, I was in the woods, ( some fella got this butt cheek chewed on by a bear in there within the last year or two.)

My perimeter alarm system consists of a shepherd /pointer mix and an Aussie shepherd / bear mix.( A really Big dark dark brown mean looking mutt.) The former is the early alert siren, someone or something approaches the property and she announces their arrival. When a vehicle or person is on the access road, they both bark. Usually , this is when folks turn around and leave. The closer they get , the more frantic, the dogs get.

I am not a short fella, not the slender type, and not the most flexible, so getting into the bilge was a task in its self, add heat and I was not in party mode. So when the early warning system kicked in, then the other joined in, I forced my head above decks to see two guys on mountain bikes, one riding slowly, the other walking pushing his bike, up the drive, and they weren't deterred by the dogs. At this point, I was not in the mood for company. I was NOT HAPPY at the intrusion, Frustrated and Pissed would be a more fitting description and had to climb out to see if these guys were lost, and to send them packing.

Two guys, young military types fit, lean, clean cut. Neither of them to this point had said a word. One of them rides right up to me and calmly says something to the effect of .......................

My buddys arm fell off, can you help..........

SAY WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!

My jaw fell open , and looked to where his buddy was still slowly proceeding toward us He seemed to be armed ( PuN). As he gets to us he lifts up his arm, and his prosthetic hand was just dangling, and he proceeded to explains , his prosthesis had snapped a cable, and he had lost control of it, and was unable grip the handle bars to ride, they had traveled less than a mile from the trail head when this occured.

After the initial shock, I relaxed, and discussed what they needed. Being the tolerant kind of guy( now I was out of the freekin bilge,) I allowed them use of my workshop, to effect repairs, some solder, a vice, pliers and a place to work. and they were ready to roll.

I didn't ask how he was injured, My assumption was it was fairly recent, he would have told if he wanted to share. The did me a favor by snapping me out of my tude, and they were able to get back on the trails for some fun before dark. Hands were offered in thanks, One had some cash stashed in it, A rather large sum I may add, ( I guess I look destitute , out there in the woods.) But All the thanks I needed, was the opportunity to help them out, that day they had given me something money couldn't buy.
A slice of inner peace, ( and a really cool story)

Cheers

Wow, great story crunchtyme. I got out in society today for the first time in a bit, society says us loner outdoor types live in a shell, which is kind of ironic seeing as how they stay cooped up in their cities under their BS limitations of what is acceptable and what is not. Well I got out of my "shell" and went downtown, hit the bar, had some pizza, reminded myself that I don't have to get frustrated with all the crap that goes on. They may be blind, but I'm not, and I don't have to blame myself for that.

I came across a deer leg stuck in a tree trunk. I have a pic somewhere. I'll post it when and if I find it.

I found an few snap shots in my photo account of things I found to be weird.

First up, while canoeing the Mississippi we went behind an island and found this.

Found this in the middle of nowhere while grouse hunting. For all I know it was parked on an farm field way back when. As it sits the closet road is probably over an while away.

And this was on an hike from this summer when we came across a controlled burn area.

All are explainable and may not be weird to some but at the time to me I was pretty taken back.

I have two.

First one:

A friend and I were in the National Forest several years ago looking to do some trout fishing. We found a spot that was easily accessible and started down the trail. No more than a 100 yards down the trail we spotted a large coat, a brown tweed trench coat sitting on a large boulder next to the river, positioned approximately ten feet off the trail. The jacket was partially covered in 5 lb. river rocks and had a large bulge underneath of it, the jacket was obviously concealing something... the hairs on the back of my neck stood up to say the least. My friend and I began to argue over who was going to look under it, I lost the argument. So I picked up a stick and began poking the jacket, no movement... I then began to remove the rocks, one by one. I had eventually removed enough rocks that it was now possible to lift the jacket, so I began the pain staking lift off of the jacket. I lifted the corner of the jacket just a little and vividly remember seeing short black hair. I quickly dropped the corner of the jacket, and immediately began to feel very uncomfortable. As many of you can imagine I began to fear the worst, human remains. After much pussy footing around, and subsequently finding a longer stick;) I gathered my courage and rushed toward the jacket and like a band aid I tore it off!

It was a dog.

But why in the world anyone would arrange a dead dog in such a strange fashion eludes me to this day.

Second one:

I was very young in this one...

I was on my way home from fishing for Crappies at a reservoir, about half an hour away from my home. I couldn't have been much more then 12 years old at the time. I was with my mom and a friend... it was late in the evening and we were making our way down a very rural, very dark woods lined road when nature called, I had to pee. Having just left the park and still being a half an hour away from home my mother made a quick right and slowed to a stop. She stopped at a small gravel parking lot in the middle of nowhere, it was deserted this late in the evening. The parking lot was one that we had passed many times and was still visible from the main road. It appeared to be as good a place as any so I hopped out and began to pee, approximately halfway through relieving myself is where it gets strange...

So I'm standing there... peeing... and I remember noticing out of the corner of my eye that my mom is flashing the lights on the car, I turn to see what's going on and just as I turn to look she rolls down the window and tells me in a stern panicked voice "Get in the car right now we need to leave!" I hurriedly zip up and jump into the car, obviously shaken. I immediately ask her what's wrong as she begins to make a hasty U turn... no reply. Now, picture if you can, the road is narrow, and I got out of the right side of the car to pee... and we are in the middle of nowhere, it's very dark and there's woods on either side of the road and my mom starts turning the car around to the left... feverishly. And like I said previously, the road is narrow, so when she went to turn around she didn't make it in the first shot, she had to back up and cut the wheel again. So by the second attempt our vehicle is completely blocking the road, its front end pointing straight into the woods... and it's at this time my mom yells "I new I saw him!".

I will never forget this next part... there in the woods about 25 feet off the road is a man, crouched down in the fetal position his head tucked in his arms... motionless. Needless to say we completed the U turn and got the hell out of there.

After everybody settles down, and we call the police to notify them of a suspicious individual,;) I get my moms side of the story. She tells me that the man caught her attention when she noticed him moving towards the car from out of the woods... directly across the road from were I was relieving myself (on the left side of the vehicle). He crouched down when he heard her yell for me out the window. I sometimes wonder how that would've ended if she hadn't noticed him moving towards our vehicle.

This is pretty minor, but it sure made me do a double-take.

I was walking in the woods behind me house.
There are lots of small trees, mostly pine and maple, it was all farmland a few generations ago.

Well I was walking along and suddenly realized one of the trees I had just passed was not touching the ground!
I looked again and there it was hanging in the air about a foot above the soil...

Apparently what had happened was a large straight limb had fallen off a big tree, on it's way down it had gotten caught in the crotch of a tree about as big as it was. Somehow it had wedged in there almost vertical.

From ground level it looked like two small trees growing side by side, one of them levitating.

To funny, I found a tree like that last fall except it was about 3' off the ground, I didn't have my camera with though.

I'll be moving some deer stands around in that area in a few weeks if it's still hanging around I'll get a shot.

I was riding my mountain bike through the local woods (bordered by residential developements) when I heard something wizz by my ear. I thought it was a bug or bird flying by. Then it happened again, but this time I took note of the faint "crack" sound that followed.... yup I was being shot at... in Canada... wierd, eh? I stopped hoping that they would "cease fire" after I was looking for them..... but....... wizzzzzzzzzz.... another shot. I jumped off my bike and sprinted for the 10ft ditch that bordered the woods and started toward the direction that the shots were comming from. They fired several more times at my bike and hit it once. By the time I got to the houses I heard the sirens. I jumped out and walked onto the street muddy as hell. They had two young boys (not even teenagers) in custody. The niehbors had reported the gunfire. I heard them say that the kids might have killed someone on a bike. The cops turn to me as I walked up and one said "are you the dead biker?"..... Yup!. It was their dad's .22 with a scope. They said they weren't trying to hit me, just scare me. The police wanted to know why I was traveling toward the firing as opposed to away from it. I smirked. Those kids got into a lot of trouble with the law.... but atleast they survived.:D

Rick

.... KDG would probably know exactly where this happened.... Brunet.

I found a big fraking Iron gear on the side of a mountain I was hiking on in Vermont a couple years ago. Must have weighed 400 lbs. no other structures up there and no idea what it came from, this would be about 40 miles NE of Burlington.

My most interesting encounter was a couple of years ago. I was working the late shift which ended at midnight. It was a cool summer night so I figured I would go cruising. I use to all the time but was going through a divorce so rarely had the money to afford the gas anymore.

I ended up somewhere around Lithopolis. The last road name I paid attention to was Rockmill Rd. I had not seen anyone else since I left work which was common after midnight on a week night.

I came to a stop sign and was kind of flipping a coin in my head which way to go. When out of nowhere a hawk landed on the hood of my truck! It just kind of looked at me for a few seconds, then looked around, and flew off.

I took it as a sign to head home. That was still one of the coolest things that has happened to me while cruising around.
