Your weirdest woods encounter

I, of course, notified the authorities and the newspaper so I could receive the much needed pat on the head while being told I did good.
I then started scouring the internet for pissing matches so I could report them and get a second gold star for the day.
A hero's work is never done.

No kidding, let'em have the Orwellian Fantasy. Someone sticks their nose in my business and I will always do my best to see that they suffer some degree, no matter how small. Ideally, once upon a time, you could smash their nose flat until the powers that be found the value in having a nation of informants.

The children need to quit bickering and take their naps. Stop ruining this thread.

Anyway my strangest "encounter" happened when I was on a hike on my favorite trail. This was the first time I hiked there and since I just stumbled upon this trail I got there somewhat late in the afternoon. I lost track of time and realized it was getting a little late and I still needed a few hours to get back to the bottom of this trail. Stupid move because I was alone, it was going to get dark, didn't have a flashlight or gear and nobody knows where I am.

Anyway, as I was walking back (it's now getting dark) I get that feeling. My hair stands up and I start to smell something. Obviously an animal, and obviously close. It was probably just a deer, but in my mind at the time I was sure there was at least five bears hunting me. Maybe a couple wild pigs, too. I was very happy to get back into the city.

During the RAT Cutlery Forum Survival Contest, I was attempting to sleep beneath the debris shelter I had built; it may have been about three o’clock in the morning when I began hearing voices. It was two males just a little ways away from me and my shelter. Although it was a full moon my position was never compromised, thankfully. It was just a bit later when the individual began discussing cocaine and the exchange of money. They also began snorting cocaine there beside my shelter. I played it cool and quiet until they left the area. Due to the guidelines of the contest I had nothing more than what I could carry in an altoids tin and a knife on my person. (edw clothing as well)
Same contest and stint in the woods I was sleeping mid-day when I awoke to a male and female voice directly behind my shelter. The women obviously suffered from a sever speech impediment and or was mentally retarded, she was talking about “how it would tickle so bad you would lose control” and how her boyfriend could not take it……….
I was like ahhhh-f#ck no. Not going down on my neck of the woods….
So I jumped out of my shelter and the grey haired women was on her knees with an elderly bearded man standing before. His stark white a$$cheeks were facing me and I could just see the women’s face bobbing to and fro.
I said “ excuse me, I am sorry to interrupt but that is not going to happen here. You need to take it else where.” The man jumped up and was quite surprised mumbling only broken sentences.. “ whered yoou come from? ..” “I responded with this is my families land your on and you need to leave.”
They were shittin and getting it !
The report is posted in the contest section at RAT if anyone is interested. This is just paraphrased.

That never stops being simultaneously terrifying (coke deal) and hilarious (older couple)! :D :D :D

L M A O and crying ! seriously... oh man...

To amend my earlier post -
In the early 90's myself and a good buddy were driving back from a place locally called The Tabletops , among other names , the 'tops' have been all manner of things from a beautiful place to hike , caves to explore , satanic imigry and slogans in a few of the narrow little /alley/canyons for want of a better term , also a place where people would go do drugs and so forth , but overall a really neat place to spend a day especially in the early spring/spring - as pretty and peaceful as it is I would not want to be there alone at night since on more than one occassion while riding my mountain bike on trails alone I have gotten the heebs for no particular reason and at night the place sort of seems like a perfect spot for a UFO to land and snatch you up, I digress.........
We are driving back at night and going maybe 40 mph thru meadow and tree filled hills , we slow down for a bumpy bridge maybe 20 mph ( mind you this is BFE middle of nowhere!) and someone/thing screams into my window as loud as if it was inside our car , we looked and spoke at each other the same time wtf was that !!? my arm hairs were risen and im gettin tingly now just recanting this , my buddy remembers it too as we spoke about it last time we hung out , there was NOBODY out there , nor would there be since theres just no houses out there and it is a long way from any town plus we woulda seen them in the headlights.
The last few times we went there I had a sense of dread then the guy that owned the land closed it off to all public access..

Too bad, it is a very pretty place to spend some time. but I can do without the whatever it was that made that godawful sound...

Here's one of mine:

When I was about 12 or so, it was early spring and my friend and I were walking through a fallow field towards our favorite woods. We saw something odd up ahead, and it turned out to be a severed cow head sitting upright on the ground. No blood, other cow parts, tracks or anything. W...T....F?

Might have been a cougar, or other large feline. They tend to sound a lot like human voices when they get to hollerin'. Up in north Jersey, there are lots of old abandoned buildings out in the woods. Out there alone, it feels like there's someone in every one of 'em, and you just start hearing things that aren't there. Very creepy.

When I was a kid working on a dairy farm ( I was 14 or so ), the Lady of the place said she'd tell me where there was a strawberry patch after I done my work. Well , when work was over , she gave me a pail and told me where to go . It was about half a mile away , but I didn't mind cos it was a nice day. So I grabbed my slippie ( old Schrade ) and my cigarettes that I was hiding, and went for a walk. Way in the farthest corner over the fence she said.
Well , I got there , climbed over and a few feet later saw a shitload of them. I light a smoke, sit for a while and start picking. The grass was kind of tall around there , but after about an half hour go to stand up, and a black bear was about 20 yards away, back turned to me , eating strawberries !
I ducked back down , scared shitless. I put my pail down and crawled on my belly the other way till I got aways down. I slowly looked behind and he hadn't moved. I kept sneaking away until I was far enough away to get to the house. I wanted my pail of strawberries back, so I waited a while, grabbed my rifle and went back. Mr. Bruin was gone and I was glad to get my pail back, still full with berries. I didn't want to shoot him , but just in case !

I heard tell of a park ranger who came upon a retired couple in their big new RV. He was on the roof with a saw cutting the branches that were hanging down too low while she slowly drove ahead.

Just because people are idiots and drive places they shouldn't doesn't necessarily mean they are up to no good.

This summer a friend and I went to yellowstone. We camped for about a week and on the last day we decided to go visit on of the more popular waterfalls. My friend got a migraine when we got there and decided to stay in the car while I went and looked. I got down to where people are allowed to view the falls. Almost immediately is start getting this weird vibe like something is not right here something bad has happened here. I also thought about how some one could jump from here and commit suicide. This is big bc if you know me you know I never think that way. Well I brushed it off and went back to the car. We went to one of those overpriced gas stations to get some gas and I go in to pay and see an announcement. Apparently the day before someone (young man in his 20's) had jumped from that very spot and committed suicide the rangers had not found his body yet. Now I am not a believer in anything supernatural but this really makes me think.

On a time CRITICAL! SAR mission we got the page for a missing 16 month old who wandered from a home through the back yard in diapers from a family get together in mid fall. The area behind the home was endless wilderness and crawling with coyotes.

4 ! hrs later and 500 yards away I follow a small river back to the 90% zone and find the tott sitting in an inch of snow stark naked at 1 am playing without a care in the world with the temp at near the freezing mark.

After stuffing him in my jacket and running to the CP I checked his vitals, primary secondary and he was in better shape than I.

I now believe in angels, something was looking out for this boy.

Yes, the parents were investigated.

Nice work, bro! I love hearing stories like this

I was hunting in the Kalahari in early 90's. Small open air camp ....... around 19:00 I heard a human voice soflty calling out. I called back and in walked a Bushman, loin cloth, bow and a small pack from animal skins over his shoulder. The Khoi San language is a lot of tongue clicking and between us we shared no common words.

He sat down in the sand next to the fire, chatted to me for about a minute. I offered him some of my food which he refused and took out a small parcel wrapped in grass and put it right into the fire. He could have been 30 or 60 or 90 ..... skin like leather. The smell said liver ...10 minutes later, after turning it over once, he dragged it out of the fire with a stick and brushed off most sand and ash. He offered me some, which I declined and ate his meat. Then pulled out an ostrich egg with a small wooden plug, offered me some water which I took a sip from and drank the rest. I offered him a refill from my 20l water can and he took out another empty ostrich egg ...filled both and place them back in the little pouch.

He spoke and gestured at the Springbuck carcass and I let him be. He used an Okapi that was thin from sharpening on the rocks and cut two small pieces of meat, then gestured wildly until he saw the intestine, made his way there and pointed out the liver, heart and kidneys. I was happy to give that to him so now his pouch was bulging. We fell quiet and stared into the fire, falling asleep a while later. I woke up at 04:10 from the cold ... no Bushman but a ostrich egg filled with water on a small sand pile and a few tracks. He was long gone ..... He never understood anything I said and I never understood what he said. He left as he come ....like a shadow!!

Sometimes I wonder where he is what he is doing right now. On a personal level .....his only tool was the old Okapi and a bow from natural materials ...I saw no man made materials so in the WSS survival contest ... I think he would have won hands down ;-)

Aubrey, what a great story, I could picture it so clearly, amazing that in this high-tech world there are people still living so simply. They truly live day to day just like the wildlife...a concept lost to most of us except as a bushcraft hobby. Thanks.

This is a great thread being ruined by a couple of people. I'd suggest dropping the pissing match before people start reporting your posts.

I enjoy reading about peoples' experiences when out and about and hope to learn something about how they handled it. I don't feel any of us should have to weed through your arguement that should be handled through PM or email.

Please stop.

To get on topic:

My dog has gotten spooked a few times in the woods, normally its over an animal that I can see and she just wants to run after it. The thing that gets me nervous is when she gets spooked and she stands still and does the low growl thing AND I can't see what is going on. I wish I had dog senses.

One time only a few weeks ago I had my son on my back and my dog on my leash and I decided to hit a trail in a State Forest that I hadn't previously been on before. I was into the hike probably only 2 miles or so when I started to see tracks from multiple humans. I thought it to be very wierd as these tracks just appeared which meant they came from off trail somewhere - not crazy just odd. Well I keep going but just get an odd feeling that I was being watched (I problaby wasn't I just got that odd feeling). Not long after that feeling started my dog stopped in her tracks staring out in front of us and started that low growl thing. Now I get more creaped out because my dog is now agreeing with my gut :) and I have my son on my back. I decided not to go any further that day and watched my a$$ all the way back to the car.

To give a little background - the forest I was in is off a road in which a lot of crime occurs. Home invasions and drug related crimes are quite common in that area but I normally don't see anyone other than young couples and families on those trails.

I feel as if I made the right decision that day.

The Eastern Shore is a great spot to go camping, hiking etc. It's a real shame that a bunch of low lifes have destroyed it. I have been told to steer clear of some areas out there, general "knucklehead" goings on :grumpy:.
