You can make a big knife perform most smaller tasks, but in most cases it's really hard to make a small knife do "big knife" tasks. For example, you can choke up on a Steel Heart and whittle wood, open a can, make fuzz sticks, or even skin game... but when it comes time to build an improvized shelter or chop firewood, it's hard to make the chips fly with a little blade.
Picking splinters is an important wilderness knife function and all

, but when you're in a hurry to either protect yourself from the windchill or die of hypothermia, would you rather be plodding along with some "gadgety" wood saw, or making some chips fly with a big honkin' blade? Seriously, SAK's are cool - I have quite a few of them, but I wouldn't choose one as THE one and only wilderness knife. They're just too small to take up the big jobs that an axe/saw/knife combo would normally fill. IMHO, of course.
If I were stuck in the middle of god-knows-where, I'd choose a Busse Battle Mistress. One big, tough, dependable blade. If it has to be a knife I currently own, I'd take my Busse Basic 9... but I'd like to put a fresh edge on it first!
