Youtube knife reviews - a few thoughts

The most important thing for me is to show the knife properly.
I want to see a size comparison to other well known knives (Victorinox for example).
Don't move it about the whole time but add some still frames.
Show how wide, long and thick it is; opened and unopened. I can't see these knives in real life so I depend on pictures and videos to judge how it looks. (especially size is very important!! bought several knives which were a lot smaller or bigger then I thought)

When it's a 15 minute review and you've only opened the knife once or twice, I get frustrated. Also, please stop rambling!

Also, comparisons! Please show the knife next to a few other knives!

AQUIRED, not required. Two different words with two different meanings.

Actually, that's ACQUIRED if you want to really nail it.

I find some of Nutnfancy's reviews - and even some of his rants - entertaining for what they are, and I think his diehard audience expects exactly the type of videos he puts out. I don't think it's reasonable to expect that he's going to put every knife (or other product) through much use/abuse unless he cuts the number of reviews way down, which is exactly what some people might want . . . but probably not his fans. However, if he's not going to demonstrate using a knife for anything more than cutting paper, I agree that he could trim the videos down to 10-15 minutes.

I thought about doing reviews of a few knives I own, especially some of the less common (or less popular) but decided that when all is said and done, about I'll be able to contribute is a lot of rambling and very little demonstration. No need for more of that.

I used to watch a lot of reviews, and still do sometimes.

I try not to focus on the reviewer, his style, or his motives. (unless it's Jim Skelton, then I move on...)

Just get what I need out of the review, and filter the rest.....

This! My biggest pet peeve is the guys with a 10 min intro just to tell you they are going to do a knife review. The title of the video tells me your going to do a knife review, I don't need you to ramble on about what your going to do for longer than you actually do something. This is why I skip the first minute of every video I watch. If they are still rambling I skip 3 mins. If they are still rambling I look else where. Actually the more I think about it, the less I like knife review videos.

+1. Definitely hate when it takes a long time to get to the point. If you can review a knife for 30 mins then cool, but if you talk about other crap for 20 mins then shut up and just do a 10 min review.

I've made a few crappy YouTube videos. I try not to "sell" a knife even though I'd like to. My goal is to just state the facts and the viewer can make up their own mind.
However, the following is my favorite video. It's long so skip around if you want to learn something and then be sure to watch the last 30 seconds or so.
Possibly NSFW.

I don't agree with Nutnfancy's philosophies and preferences, however i really like how he has his list of topics in every knife review. The list of topics is concise and organized. Every knife reviewer can apply a list of topics to cover on their own videoes to make them better organized and equal.

On another note, many "reviewers" dont actually review how the knife performs. Just because you opened the box and carried it around in your pocket for a day doesn't mean you know how it performs over time. Those videoes should be first impressions, not reviews. You can't possibly know what the strengths, weaknesses, positives, and negatives are of a knife that you've had for a day, or in some cases a few hours. Perhaps carry the knife for a month or more before you really evaluate it.

Unboxing videos make me want to punch kittens. I like reviews where they have actually tested the knife and keep it short and simple <10 minutes...otherwise I have to keep fast forwarding as they blabber on about nothing.

If I'm watching a knife review, I'm watching it cause I want to see a knife review. I'm not watching it to hear a diatribe about how Obama is killing America and going to take away all our guns, or to hear that you're gonna focus on being healthy, dieting, and start going to the gym, or to hear the funny story about what your kid/pet/spouse did yesterday if it doesn't relate to the knife being reviewed. If you want to talk about your life, or politics, or whatever, upload a separate vlog type video, and if I truly find you that interesting a person, I'll check it out on it's own.

Lol...

True words. The Youtube comments section (for pretty much any video no matter the subject) is sort of like the black hole of the interwebs...
