Youtube Video Show

Hey, Andy,

I know a few things about this subject. I bet I could show you how to do this on a shoestring and still make it awesome.

Also, I am cheap to hire to help you--I can be bought for dinner. I am going to be your way for Blade.

Derrick

that sounds great.
ill buy your dinner if that is what it takes:D

I'll buy drinks and dessert just to listen in on that lesson. I have been thinking about trying my hand at video reviews for a while. I would much rather learn up front from experienced mentors than duplicate the mistakes of most rookies.

What a cool offer. Those KSF guys are OK!

+1 on what a cool offer. i would vouch for the fact that Derrick has all the aspects of marketing down cold... website construction and function, employment of social media, video production and youtube, and use of weekly email newsletter. Derrick could really help the forge in these areas.

May I ask why you're cutting production?
Are you cutting production on the production knives? (the Kephart in particular)

The entire knife industry (dealers and every maker I've talked to) is in a slump. IMO this is due to a lot of BIG sections of our economy having their fun money dry up. In my family, healthcare costs have gone up 10X. Everything is expensive and nothing is covered. I believe this is at the heart of it. But the American oil industry is in a slump too, and thats a huge sector of decreased fun money. Not trying to get political, but even Walmart is cutting stores. This economy sucks. We are cutting production to cut expenses and so that I can hold onto my staff. These are trained craftsmen that I love and do not want to loose any of them. This is just plain old down and dirty scrapping with this economy. I'm scrappy Mr. Economy, so bring it on.

I think a series of videos on the history of Fiddleback would be cool. Kind of like when the old threads pop up in the forum. Maybe start with what models came first, what was the reason for them, how they changed over time and why, etc. You could even pull old pictures from Fotki and add audio over the top. Just a thought.

Regardless I like the video idea.

I like the idea of talking about the history. Nice! This is what we're going to do with this series. I want to take your ideas and questions and work them into the videos.

I like the idea ... but I'd also like to see more eye candg pics/posts of knives in the works or just finished on your Instagram.

We had lost the tablet. Its been found and instagram is going to get going again.

Go for it Id watch them. You may want to look into the GoPros cams. They are cheap small an almost indestructible they will also record in HD 4K. Ive got one that I use for every an the resolution is as good as most 1000.00 cams. I find myself using my GoPro more an more over my high end camcorder. Im pretty sure you can get them from 199.00 and up. Chuck

I already have a go pro. That will be getting used. The fish eye view isn't the best for showing off knives though.

Youtube channels with videos can be cheap advertising, but you still have to get people there and then have something worth a damn to watch.

I'd re-iterate what I mentioned before, and what has been said here again... your website NEEDS help. If I go to a website and it doesn't appear to be updated, nor engage me... I'm pretty quick to move on to the next. There are so many potential customers that have no earthly idea what Bladeforums is. Website construction isn't brain surgery anymore either. There are many great website design interfaces that you could easily teach yourself. SQUARESPACE!

If it were me, and I had a whole day to spare, I'd take at least one hour out of that day and devote it to social media (instagram, facebook, twitter). Try your hand at writing and share your experiences via newspapers, magazines, blogs etc.

Folks, we spend $1K/month on website. That is for the designer and for the content in the form of articles. It is an ongoing process.

I would value your help my friend. I hope you're coming early enough to hang out for a while!

I don't get fish eye with mine. I've got a GoPro 4 black. With a wide view Lens.

Last year for my YouTube project I picked up a Panasonic HC-V770. It's a really nice camera for what it costs. Shoots full HD has an awesome zoom, lots of cool features. I also plan on picking up a newer GoPro this year to pair with it for more angles. I have an old GoPro that I will use as well, but the new ones have a lot more user friendly features. I'm not sure what your plans are for sound recording, but I plan on picking up a digital audio recording, such as a Zoom H-1 or the like and a wind screen. Most of my filming that would utilize a recorder will be out in the mountains or on the lake so I need portable. If you're just going to do stuff around the shop a larger mic would probably work as well, though may be more expensive.

I could see my self upgrading to a DSLR in the future for video recording the the Panasonic works great for now.

Ok, how about playing suit with the bearded dudes' show and throwing in some practical jokes and getting the wives and kids involved? Maybe throw in a sweet-tea loving uncle? You could take a group shot and sell some of those Fotki mugs :-)

On second thought, I don't know how those other guys get any work done so forget I said anything.

We have an idea for a skit. But I don't think we're going to do it right off.
