Zac Brown and Southern Grind

Their online store wasn't even up a couple weeks ago; they really are just getting started. I'm hoping for a little drop in price if/when they start shipping to retailers.

That would be nice. I'm really trying to avoid buying more knives for the time being, but if these were dropped down to about 120 I wouldn't be able to hold off. Again my main concern is whether or not the wave is licensed or is intended to be more of a thumb ramp and is coincidentally able to be used as a wave.

As to the steel, its better than AUS-8 and a certain company was making knives with that steel that had an msrp of 2-300 dollars.

Had a chance to play with these at the Blade Show and was less than impressed - Both Benchmade and Spyderco have produced/produce models for less than 200.00 that in my opinion are far superior in steel quality and fit/finish.

It's licensed. Supposedly Zac is a big fan of Mr. Emerson and his knives. Pat.# is on the blade I believe. I'll probably try one out sooner or later, even at there current price point.

Well then that does it, I see a southern grind in my future, as soon as they start shipping to retailers. Probably a 25% reduction which would make it just at the 130 price point. They look like great knives to me and i for one think the little monkey is more nifty than tacky.

Well lets see......4" blade in 14c28, titanium liners, nestled in carbon fiber, legit Emerson wave, custom hardware, fit & finish better than Emerson productions, plus some other goodies, and it is completely produced in the USA. All this for $170 does not seem too bad to me.
I don't understand the hate for this guy, is there a you tube video of him kickin' puppies or something.
I guess you could pay $170 for VG-10 CF Native or $170 for VG-10 CF Caly 3.5

Or 175 for a carbon fiber/ZDP189 Caly 3.5..... :D

Just playing devil's advocate.

exactly why i cant wait for mine to arrive on thursday

Does anyone know when or if they are hitting retailers? I would love to handle one as cf and the emerson wave float my boat.

One thing that no one has brought up is the fact that it requires a specialty tool to adjust the screws and the tool is not available yet and doesn't come with the knife.

They can keep the Koozie, keychain and paracord if it means the price comes down or it comes with the adjustment tool instead.

... I'll have to wait and see on this one. :-/

I removed 13 posts of trolling and insults and tossed them into W&C. Do NOT resurrect that off-topic talk here.

Wow, I'm behind. Just learned about Southern Grind today, so here I am. Personally, I think the Bad Monkey branding is pretty silly (particularly the pivot), but the knives look decent, as does the company's manufacturing facilities. At first I thought the folder was a total Emerson ripoff, because of the wave but also because of the tanto's overall blade shape, lines, and proportions.

However, since SG seems to be one of the only companies to actually license the Wave patent instead of just tweaking the shape and using it freely, that immediately makes me more interested. I'd like a little more originality in the line before I make the jump though (and I consider the $170ish pricetag more or less reasonable all things considered). The current model looks like a CQC-7/Skyline mashup that's just too derivative for my tastes.

Blade steel notwithstanding, the materials and reputed fit and finish are very compelling. I just wish they hadn't used proprietary screws.

Oh, and they should call the Wave the "Banana."

I received my Bad Monkey Drop Point just yesterday. I hope to do a video review soon, but need the knife specs first; the website does not currently list all specs. :-(

I've had mine for a couple weeks and have been very impressed so far. Fit and finish is perfect. It's light, rugged and big. I got mine in the exchange here with the tools, which are available now. My local knife pusher got a distributorship with them but they are still just trickling in. Like someone said, they are just getting on their feet and weren't prepared for the demand they're being met with. The BM is currently my favorite edc. The doodads that came with it are very nice ad well, also made in the USA. It's just... right.

THanks Bigfatts. Ive had my eye on getting an SG for awhile now, if I can wait and see if they hit retailers soon with a lower price point then so much the better, but even at msrp its on my list.

Why would Mr. Brown price his product at a wholesale level so that it could be sold for less than what he is selling for directly? These days, MSRP on knives is a fuzzy number than nobody charges other than mall stores or the store on Pier 39 in San Fransisco because they have to cover their outrageous rent payments.;) Think "selling" price which is typically around 80% of MSRP or probably exactly what you see Mr. Brown selling his stuff for. Custom and one off makers do not really have MSRP vs. selling price and as such, do not discount their stuff nearly as much from stated price as manufacturers do. I suspect that the "MSRP" for Mr. Brown's $170 folder might be somewhere around $210 if'n it had one.

Hey, f they start to produce in greater numbers, like emerson, then you cna find amazing deals if you are patient.

Fancier blade steel, yes. Ergos are subjective so I can't say as to that. But I tell you, the F&F on the BMs I've seen is better than on the Emersons I've handled. Not to mention Emersons are butt ugly, also subjective.
