ZDP-189 Pro's And Con's

I think ZDP like any steel should be properly cleaned, oiled & wiped dry. You should never have a problem with it. People should try to be more creative in finding uses for their EDC's than using them to prepare & eat their dinner - need to look into some kitchen cutlery maybe?

I'd feel like a flaming retard pulling out my XM-18 to butter a dinner roll or cut the fat off a pork chop. :)

cziv--I am so glad you said this. I think the same thing when I see pics of guys who cut their steak at a restaurant with a Sebenza instead of the steak knife provided by the establishment. Funny stuff.
Anyway, I have a Dragonfly II in ZDP-189 and it is sharp and rust-free.

Only problem I have had with my Caly 3 in ZDP 189 is some micro chipping on the edge, after I used it to cut through some of those super thick plastic ties. But, once I put a new edge on it, I've had zero problems since. No corrosion at all, either.

I was tempted to do the same while eating steak on my birthday as I looked at the provided serrated:rolleyes: steak knife and saw the first inch from the tip worn down to butter knife sharpness from repeated contact with the ceramic plate. Then I thought better than to dull my Kershaw RAM on the plate as well and went back to the stone age on that steak, because I would have had an easier time cutting with a rock knife.

It was a Hinderer XM-18 with a stonewashed finish. Frankly, Rick might be onto something when he suggested it was the pH level of my tap water since ZDP also rusted on me when I forgot to wipe it dry after washing it. That, and the high humidity in Hawaii means that water takes longer to evaporate.

As an off-topic note, I don't recommend anyone use salt water or their own sweat to test corrosion resistance, that's just deliberately abusive. Though I should note that S90V and CTS-20CP passed that test with flying colors:D. Sleipner, not so much.

Funny you bring that up Noctis. My Dad was wearing the blueing off of his high $$ akeet guns some years ago. The guys called him "old poison hands" and hung garlic around their fancy skeet guns. I told him it was my opinion, since I never saw the man with a glass of water is his hands, that his persperation was of such a high acid content - that it had to be the culprit. So did he dring more water or eat more green leafy vegetables - nope, he bought shooting gloves. :grumpy: :D

I see it with high end knives, and you know the guys are trying to justify using their expensive folders w/o daring to get a mark on them, so they trim the fat off of their steak and strategically photograph the Sebenza or XM-18 on the plate like it really belonged there..lol Funny stuff to me anyway. :D

Cziv - No worries; no offense meant, and none taken.

Thanks, I enjoy your contributions when you post and was having a little fun I guess, Use the heck out of that ZDP! I don't own one they're so darn expensive! Even a humble Endura goes through the roof with that blade steel, It must be some really hot stuff! I have the ZT 0560 and an XM-24 on order or I'd spring for one. I have to keep my PP acct. locked and loaded for those two though so my $$ is is already spoken for. :)

Why not try the ZT 0350 sprint run in ZDP? Seems reasonable around $180, but maybe I've raised my bar quite a bit after repeatedly shelling out $500+ for knives. The ZT 0777 seems like a bargain to me at just under $500:thumbup:.

I have gotten where I can cut almost all the way through a bite of steak and not hit the plate, then lift the bite with a fork and cutting the last bit in the air. It takes a Sharp knife but doesn't take any longer than hacking through with the butter knife and grinding the blade into the plate to get through the last bit. I don't eat a whole meal with a pocket knife hardly at all, it's normally functions that have paper plates and plastic ware. But if I need to cut something I do so, even if its food in a restaurant. It wasn't that long ago that every 'gentleman' carried a pocket knife. I don't feel silly using my knife at all, in fact I feel pretty normal using one.

Ha. It makes me laugh whenever I see statements about knives made like "a bargain to me at just under $500", and I can totally understand and even sometimes agree.

Cziv - I see ZDP Delica's/Endura's/Stretch's come up in the exchanges pretty frequently for under $100. If you have any knives just lying around not being used, I've taken to trading off or selling anything I don't use; you might could trade into something with ZDP for very little money at all.

The only ZDP-189 blade I own is a Ladybug; it was less than $40. Little rascal stays sharp for what seems like forever. I haven't noticed it prone to corrosion at all, and I live on the Gulf Coast.
