Zombie knife help!

Hey guys I hope this is the right Subforum to post this but i have been getting into small-time knife making and a friend of mines birthday is next month and he is a really big zombie "enthusiast" a pretty hardcore one too. I however feel its just make believe:foot: so I need fellow enthusiasts help to design him a zombie blade, I would be making it so nothing to fancy but I am capable enough to make most designs. Yes I am positve I want to He would know the difference between a cool design and a "practical" one so it should be able to take a real beating. So what do you think would be a great design, any pics of others designs and specs would also help.

A real zombie killer is a machete, or a long thin knife for getting stabby on some brains. Apparently the "zombie colors" are neon green and black, but I'd stay away from that. If you're making one, leave the finish on so it is darker, wrap the handle up in some hemp or leather and seal it completely with resin/epoxy.

For shapes, look at weapons historically designed to behead of lop off limbs, ie: tulwar, chinese dao, Thai dha, and the aforementioned machete. Since there is a lot of messed up mutilation that goes on with machetes in certain parts of Africa, I would say a bolo or panga machete works well. In Mexico, the latin style machete has been used in ritualistic killings.

Not trying to be overly dark here, just trying to approach your query from a serious mindset.
 
Make believe? How make believe is rabies? One small molecular adaptation from a particular virus and you have yourself a human outbreak. Sounds far fetched....I know. I'm not going to argue that one, I just think we are a lot closer to something like this happening than people think. Not the "Walking Dead" type.....more like the 28 days later type. To each their own.

I know the zombie question has been done a million times before and most are sick of hearing about this kind of question but as far as which blade design to use........Cold Steel Gurka Kukri would be about the perfect design in every which way in my opinion.

HI would probably be a better choice for a kukri. I think he's wanting to make one though.

I agree, I started this thread with the full knowledge that it was going to kind of dark and your advice is solid because as far as I know going for the head is the right way to go
 
I would also say kukri. However machete is much less carrying weight if thats important, easier to sharpen also.
 
Sorry if I offended anyone but im talking like dawn of the dead/The Walking Dead/WWZ kind of "zombie". I do see the possibility of some sort of "rage virus" causing a pandemic but not like he does.
 
Look at kabar's bigger knives in there zombie line. I'd go with their the more pointy designs

I know. He was asking for design and to duplicate the CS Gurka would be my idea of the way to go. Pretty much perfect in every way in my opinion. I like HI's.....I own several.....but to me the CS Gurka is the perfect chopper/beheader/delimber there is.

As far as the "walking dead" type versus the 28 days later type I was just pointing out that I think it's a fairly likely situation with the "still actually alive" type zombie as opposed to the undead kind.

Still.......either way.......a light, long, full flat grind Kukri design like the CS Gurka would be my vote. Dead or alive.....that design would make pretty quick work of a disease spreading human shell.

Like I said he wants something more practical and not really elegant but more rugged

EDIT:The more I think of it thats not a bad idea, I think I could black it out with a paina, make it narrow, Maybe a bit of a forward facing curve...Me likey! What other ideas do you got?

Theoretically, a zombie killer needs to be capable of either taking off a head or destroying it. So you either want something like a machete or katana that can decapitate, or a big thick blade that'll just smash the skull. Choose your poison.
 
Look at the zombietools website. The have a ton of different designs that are tough and meant to be used. Pick one you think your friend would like and is within your capabilities to make, or maybe combine a few designs for something more original. Good luck!

Dirk, 13" blade, for brain stabs. Cold Steel apparently do a good one. Symmetrical but single edged.

Combined with spiked targe shield & basket hilted broadsword, a lethal combo. Jab stab hit. Just don't mention Culloden

Trench spike/knuckle duster combos always scream zombie killer to me...not a big zombie person myself so I dunno how "practical" it would really be tho
 
So this is my going design, based off a bowie and a dirk it would have a 12-14 inch blade with 3/16 thick 5160 steel with wood handles

If you were designing from the mindset that a "Walking Dead style" zombie outbreak could really happen...you should be making a machete, not a knife. Something that can take a head off, or deliver a lethal chop into one, ideally from outside the reach of the zombie. The farther away you can be when you make the kill, the less likely you are to get scratched or bitten in the process. Plus with a good machete, you can also lop limbs off...might make it easier to deliver the fatal head blow if it's not able to grab at you.
