How is this steel when it comes to sharpening. I am looking at the Delica and Endura models in this steel.

ZDP-189 is harder to sharpen than most steels. It's harder than most steels, it's ability to resist abarasion is greater than most steels, so it stands to reason that it would be harder to sharpen.

Spyderco knives uses thinner edge geometry's which helps, but it is still harder to sharpen than most steels.

Endura ZDP-189 fully serrated is my EDC. (One of them :D)

It is an astounding cutter.
Ridiculously sharp out of the box and has not needed even a touchup since.

Thanks Sal for the great knives you make!

Sal. I got a new Sharpmaker for Xmas. How does it work on the super steels?

Yes it does. But the ability of ZDP to resist abrasion is obvious.

I use the white stones often. I use my knife daily to cut many materials (ZDP Stretch2) and I touch up daily. Letting ZDP get dull is masochism for sharpening. I use the diamonds for reprofiling or if it gets too dull.

The Military is made in Golden. ZDP is made and best heat treated in Japan.

The US counterpart to ZDP is CPM-S90V. The S90V Military is now available with carbon fiber scales.

S90V available now? Where would we be able to order one?

I have a burgandy Calypso Jnr in ZDP 189, it has been my regular weekday EDC for quite some time now. I had no trouble profiling it on the Edgepro and the Sharpmaker keeps it in tune nicely without too much effort.

I did no notice any difference - until it is work-hardening as H1 was (reported by Spyderco customers)...

I use diamonds and for diamonds (DMT) it does not matter is it ZDP189 or 420HC.

Thanks, Vassili.

OHBOY!!!!!!! GOTTA GET ONE!!!!!:D:D:):):D:D

Who's got 'em????

"Spyderco knives uses thinner edge geometry's which helps".

Endura 4 ZDP, 40 degrees, 0.85mm edge (loser here)
Native III VG-10, 30 degrees, 0.80mm edge

Leek, 13C26, 30 degrees, 0.70mm edge
JYD II, 13C26, 40 degrees, 0.55mm edge

Griptilian 551 154CM, 30 deg, 0.55mm
Skirmish 630, S30V, 40 deg, 0.40mm
BM 710, D2, 40 deg, 0.30mm (winner here)

It looks like Kershaw knives use thinner edge, and BM knives use super-thinner edge.
Sorry, can't resist :)

Spyderco makes good knives, but E4 is really too thick. I can't slice an apple. I can only chop it.

Hi Work,

I just put my S90V Military on a goniometer and I get 32 degrees (16 per side) with an edge thickness of .62mm at the shoulder.

If you have an ZDP E4 that is as thick as you say, I'll have to look into that. They should be thinner, 32-34 degrees and .75 at the shoulder. Thanx for the input.

that's the saber grind, not the edge thickness.

that's a nice edge on the 710, other than my M2 Rittergrip (0.019" stock) the dozen other BMs I've had were around three times that thick. That JYD II is also 0.01" thinner than my JYD was at it's thinnest point (got much thicker at the tip)

I measure angle using simple tool with 10/20/30/40/50 degrees slots. Result is not precise, but enough to setup the Sharpmaker. I'm sure originally it was close to 40, not 30.

I re-profiled my E4 ZDP to tiny 40 edge / large 30 bevel, so I can't prove anything now. I bough the knife April 06. I can only believe I measured correctly.

Yes, agree. I think the best E4 was G10 prototype with full flat grind. I'm sad that 2008 catalog shows E4 G10 blade similar to the current production one.

Where can we buy the S90V Military? If you don't answer me Sal, I'm going to have to type this question again...Don't make me do it...

All of the Spydercos I have came in around .018"-.023" (the Manix was the thickest, rightfully so) from the factory. I'm pretty sure the Caly Jy. ZDP that I have was thinner than .018" from the factory, but it was reground to a .005" edge by Tom Krein before I got it. The angles were from about 12 per side to 16 per side. Much thinner than most other folders from other manufacturers that I have or have borrowed (a Kershaw Cyclone was .030"/22 degrees per side, others from CRKT were similarly thick). The Benchmade Rukus I used had a Spyderco type edge geometry, though some of the Grips I have handled had thicker edges judging by my eyes. The Enduras do have a thick saber grind, but you can always buy the G-10 flat ground version or send your Endura to Tom Krein for a full flat grind and .010" (or however thick you want) edge on it. My reground ZDP Endura cuts very well now without the wedging you get from a saber grind.
