Yes, agree. I think the best E4 was G10 prototype with full flat grind. I'm sad that 2008 catalog shows E4 G10 blade similar to the current production one.

really? Kristi posted the same images in this thread, http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=519427&highlight=catbyrd, hopefully it's an error in the catalog.:(

Hi Work,

I'm not doubting you. I'm appreciative that some know enough and care enough to provide feedback.

Those are very nice guages, where did you get them?

Hi Kaizen,

they're finihsing up QC. They should be shipping next week.

On the G-10 E4/D4, production is flat ground. The catalog is in error.

Maybe we should make the E4/D4 in ZDP flat ground like the Stretch2?

Thanks for the update Sal. Flat ground ZDP E4/D4? Do you really have to ask?:):)

Flat ground VG-10 versions (wave included) wouldn't hurt either;).

I measure angle using simple tool with 10/20/30/40/50 degrees slots. Result is not precise, but enough to setup the Sharpmaker. I'm sure originally it was close to 40, not 30.

I re-profiled my E4 ZDP to tiny 40 edge / large 30 bevel, so I can't prove anything now. I bough the knife April 06. I can only believe I measured correctly.

"that's the saber grind, not the edge thickness"

Hi work3,

I've been looking for gauges like yours for the longest time. Could you please let me know where to get them, so that I can set up my Edgemaker.

Thanks.

Hi!
These gauges were made in Russia. Probably small number. They had been sold by Russian knives/guns forum to the members last summer. As far as I know - not available now. Sorry.
The right one really looks spider-friendly :)

I use dmt's, and it's not hard to sharpen at all. More than other steels, yes, but the diamonds chew right through it.

I had one of my ZDP Calypso Jr's thinned out by Tom Krein with a nice high, hollow grind. Great cutter! I wanted to try it a little thinner, so I laid it flat on my dmt and worked it down some more. It's really ugly, I'll try to post a pic, but so far, it's my best cutter, and sharpens up really easy, since it's so thin. I haven't had any problems with chipping, but just been cutting cardboard so far.

Hi Work,

Any objections if we use the idea and make up some guages?

They'd be a nice addition to the steel charts we make.

Sal,

If you decide to make any of these, please let me know. I would like to get a bunch.

Thanks,

Ronin

Gauges would be great!

I am jumping up & down right now! I bought an E4 SE months ago. I love to look at it and hold it but because of the saber grind I will likely never EDC.

Flat grind=a dream come true!

I think if Spyderco changed to a flat grind with the ZDP D4/E4, the numbers sold among enthusiasts would soar. Those of us who do not have one yet will feel compelled to jump in. Those who already have a saber grind version (like me, I have a D4 ZDP) will buy the new flat grind version. I know I would.

Also look at one made by Richard Kell, Bevel Gauge. Made for wood chisels so it won't work for micro bevels. But still useful. Something small with mutiple angles made with knives in mind would be good. Keep it narrow enough for use on serrations if possible. Probably put the spyder hole in the middle.:D

I doubt that this gauges properly protected by copyright law or whatever it should be. But you should ask this question to however made them not to work3.

I can ask in Russian forum, but which one? Is it guns.ru?

Thanks, Vassili.

It has been said that if you're going to dream, then DREAM BIG!

I have a Millie in CPM D-2, will soon have one in S90V, and I'm already dreaming of Millies in CPM 3V and CPM M-4!:p:thumbup::p

Are ya listening, Sal? :p
