ZT 0454 Limited Edition

Congrats on winning one in the lotto. The 0454 just looks all kinds of awesome. As for production numbers, we'll have to wait for them to all ship, and then see what serial numbers are floating out there. It's not an exact figure, but it should be in the ballpark. The "10" number is what they had for the lotto at Blade. I'm sure there are going to be more than that.

Thanks.
Honestly... didn't know that (supposedly) only ten were made until after I got it.

As I said in the other 0454 thread the original add stated only 10 were made. Adds like these are a hype to startle someone into paying max dollars.

Now that you mention it, I was asked "which number do you want" (on the box), if I remember correctly I picked "042".
There were several people before me, I would imagine they chose lower numbers.
I shipped it back to myself via a UPS store located inside the Cobb Center, so when it arrives next week I'll take some photos of the #'s on the blade + info on the end of the box.

You a Douglas Adams fan, or was that just a random pick? ;) Either way, congrats again. That looks to be a really fantastic knife.

Was absolutely a random stop/pick...never heard of the knife before I turned the corner of the room and found myself on the edge of the large crowd that had formed for the lotto... I asked a guy next to me what lotto was this for and he mumbled ZT something... so I asked for a ticket, a ZT rep. handed me one and said "this is the last one, you better hurry up, it's starting right now"... I filled it out fast, handed it back and then my # and name were the third or fourth called.

This was the ZT lotto, as soon as my camera went off they called my #.

LoL! .... after Blade we (3 other guys I went with and shared a hotel room with) had time to kill before we hit the airport to go home, we decided to stop off at 'Going Gear' as is was close.
While there one of the guys was looking at a Bali and flipped it.... he cut the crap out of his middle finger... good thing I carry wound seal with me, he was bleeding like crazy until I poured some of the powder into the slice, stopped it right away, stuff is amazing.

Just because one person paid $1000 for it because he was duped into believing there was only 100. You won't know until they are all out there. The prices on LEs like the 0600, 0801cf, 0560cbcf are not INSANE.

Are they more expensive than new, yes, but they aren't anywhere close to 2x the price.

The 0454 is probably going to see pricing closer to the original 0777 (non-M390) and the 0888 IMO. I hate to say it but down the road we will be talking about the good old days when you could get a 0454 for under $1,000. The original 0777 is now selling for between $2,000-$4,500.

If only I was rich. Maybe I'll start selling body organs. They sometimes give you twos of things you only need ones of. Well, except my balls...I would prefer not to auction one of them off. A second ball is kind of like the redundancy of a RAID drive. It's peace of mind.

The 0454 won't be rare enough

There are more than ten (10) made, they only brought ten of them to the show (Blade 2014) hence "limited".
Re: serial #'s, mine is 0042, I was the 3rd or 4th called and was given a choice of serial numbers to chose from, I chose the lowest #.
Out of curiosity I called them today, I asked about serial numbers lower than the 10 "limited Edition" units brought to the show, I was told "out of the initial run, we take any out of circulation that don't pass quality control".
I then asked how many were made and when might they be released for sale to the general public, the answer was "we can't give out that information".

We'll see. It's a possibility but I doubt this knife is going to have a very high run, and like the ZT0777 and Kershaw Tilt (and now the 0888 is in the starting phase) I think we are going to see third party sales become very rare after dealer stock is depleted, and prices are going to spike.

Since I started buying these ZT/Kershaw LEs, I've noticed this trend...
  1. Wait - historically long with ZTs in the ballpark of 1-2 years, during which anticipation actually grows rather than is forgotten, some presales but not many given dealers have no way to guarantee they get a knife (ZT0392 has just entered this stage)
  2. Strays before initial production - high premiums (ZT0454 has entered this stage this week)
  3. Dealers get bulk of the stock - short stay, lowest pricing, stock sells in a matter of days or even hours; demand grows significantly and generally once dealers sell their first stock, any further stock is not very likely (ZT0801CF was here a few months ago)
  4. Third party sales common, but most dealer stock gone - prices not completely ridiculous relative to MSRP but there is still quite a premium (0777M390 was here like 8-ish months ago, ZT0801CF is about to leave this stage)
  5. Third party sales become rare as most owners are not selling - prices spike, sometimes multiple times original MSRP (ZT0888 and ZT0777M390 are entering here, Kershaw Tyrade 1850 is about to leave here)
  6. Third party sales become almost non-existent, even eBay sales records shows little or no past sales on the entire intraweb, and collectors may spend months or even a year or more locating the right specimen; finding one of these knives becomes practically a second job (ZT0777 is here as is the Kershaw Mini Cyclone and Leek in ZDP-189/titanium; Tilt isn't far from here)

You could technically say most knives go through this process, but I dont think any production knife is as pronounced as many of the LE ZTs and for whatever reason the ZTs go through these stages super fast. I find it extremely interesting to watch. Part of this I think is because there are more collectors willing to pay high dollar prices on these knives than other limited editions.

That's all well and good except you missed the 0560CBCF and the 0600, both of which have been out for over a year and haven't spiked.

They haven't transitioned over. Some dealers still have some stock of both (to my understanding, I am not supposed to list names despite them being KAI-authorized). Most likely, they will eventually move up this scale. They currently have not spiked in third party and they aren't moving as fast as some of the others listed. It's not 100% certain towards every single model, but it's just a general trend I have noticed.

Ive seen the O.G. 0777 going for a lot less than 2000-4000$. Just just came across one seller is holding for me at 1275$

The last 0777 that I bought was NIB and I paid $900.00. That was about 3 months ago.
