ZT 0551 with up & down blade play?

Wow, that's pretty bad news for a 200+ $ knife

How about ones which cost $475 (SmF)?
How about ones which cost $400 (Umnumzaan)?
Things happen, and you either deal with it or complain.
I chose to deal with it.:)

I still think this sums it up.
Also, the lock isn't failing on the knife, it just has some wiggle, which can be easily corrected by bending the bar a tad further.:)

If people really don't like the issue, they should probably just stay away from frame-locks, because this sort of thing does happen.
Oh yeah, it happened on the Spyderco Titanium Miltary my brother has too...he just doesn't care, and continues to use the knife because it's still safe.

Yup, Frame Locks have a host of idiosyncrasies at every price level- getting one perfect means someone had to spend a lot of time fine tuning it or they got lucky. A production line is typically not very conducive to "fine tuning" anything.

Thomas,

knivesandguns seems to have nailed this.

40degrees, you are on thin ice. Should you decide to use that icon again in this forum you will not be posting here again. It would be a whole lot better for you to stick to the knives since the other antics are not cute at all.

Never mind. He is just a retuning troll banned again.

607 here, I'm guessing they changed something with the second batch.

Mine is 0407. It's the one I had pimped. It locks up tight as a drum and is buttery smooth to open and close but it has one little problem. The lock is rough/sticky.

I thought I had it beat but I still have to apply a sharpie to the tang periodically in order to keep it working. It is the only flaw in an otherwise perfect knife.

It isn't a big deal, but it is annoying. It does rob some of the joy I get from the luxurious experience of opening and closing the knife.

I just talked the warranty dept. I may send it back.

I thought my lock was sticky too until I realized that I was pressing on the lockbar as I was disengaging the lock. A little lube and break in time also probably helped.

Instead of using a Sharpie, use a pencil. The graphite is a good lubricant.

Graphite (pencil lead) fixed my sticky lockbar, and only requires reapplication every few weeks. Also, my knife started to exhibit front/back blade play. I stopped EDCing the knife for awhile because of this, but this thread helped me remedy the problem by taking the knife apart and bending the lock bar further, and putting it back together.

PROBLEM SOLVED, will start EDCing this knife again. But while it was out of my pocket, a kershaw RAM made itself confortable, so they might have to share EDC duties for a while :p

Ive had my ZT 0551 for a few weeks now and I love this knife. Its by far my favorite folder I own and I have a alot of nice folders. When I first got it it was real solid no play at all. Now that Ive opened and closed a few thousand times I noticed that on the thumb studs theres alittle rub where it hits the knife to stop. Also I have a small amount of up and down play in the blade I'm guessing from the wear to the studs. Is this a normal issue? Would Kershaw fix this issue? I'm the kind of guy that this sort of thing bothers me to no end.

Mine is tighter than a bank vault.

Just wanted to say thanks for the info in this thread...

My 0551 is numbered 444 and had a very small amount of vertical play... to most people it would probably be a non issue but it was bugging me a bit.

Anyway since Im in singapore sending it for warranty just wasnt going to happen...

After seeing this thread i stripped it down and bent the lockbar slightly inwards - now it locks up super tight. No play whatsoever and opens just as easily.

This is the first time I have attempted to fix an issue like this and it took me literally less than 5 minutes.

Cheers guys!

Awesome!
It gives a nice sense of satisfaction when one fixes the issue oneself too, doesn't it?:)
