Pre-orders are always a gamble, you might secure the best price, but you probably won't be the first to get the knives. There's also the risk of the first batch released having QC issues, that you might have to send back. With a lot of knives it seems the first batch or two are not quite as refined as later batches. It's completely unacceptable though if companies are putting knives up for sale instead of filling their pre-orders after they have had your $ for months.
It would be interesting to know if knife dealers are purposely taking more pre-orders than knives they expect to get, or if knife companies are making promises they aren't keeping, my guess would be some of both. There are plenty of manufacturers in every industry out there that quote quantities and delivery dates they can't meet just to get orders, then they play the apology game later when they can't meet their promises, knowing most won't cancel those orders.
