ZT 0777 - did I get a dud?

For the money they charge for these they should all be darn near perfect..that blade centering is terrible. I would send that one back to the dealer ASAP...

I agree.

Sad that this type of personal disrespectful post happens. Reported. :thumbdn:

Really?? Sure, his post was a bit blunt, but I think he's just voicing his opinion. This forum will be less useful to me if everybody is restricted to posting cheerleader/fanboy comments.

And this will conclude our time here on BF's...

If there are issues with any of our knives, know we'll take care of you.

Take care everyone.

I've bought 20+ KAI knives in the past year (almost all ZT), and I own more KAI than any other brand. The Kershaw section on this site was one of the primary reasons too. I got excited and spent alot of $ after reading the daily threads, new release info, and seeing the direct interaction with the manufacturer. To be honest, my enthusiasm for ZT has waned a bit since KAI has disconnected from the internet.

Oh God, this place has become a circus freak show. If anyone's got a problem with their knife, why put it on here and start this. Just contact your dealer or send an email to KAI about your worries. They have an amazing CS, EVERYONE on BF knows that....so why all this personal attack. Keep it cool guys and don't post if you have negative comments, this is really hurting BF if this continues in the general discussion forum as well. Such threads always have a domino effect and it snowballs into something worse. This thread needs to be locked.

"don't post if you have negative comments". You've got to be kidding. Imagine how useless amazon.com product reviews would be if they deleted all of the negative comments.

I hope this isn't it. To see interactions between manufacturers like you and enthusiasts like us is what draws me to BF.

I show support for your company thru my pocketbook, not by speaking out here. 2013 has been an awesome year for ZT, and not so much so for my savings account. Please continue to drop by and let me know where my money should be spent.

I sure hope that the person who posted this was just being overly emotional or something. If KAI decides to leave BF because they were so offended by a couple of people being critical that they left the forums altogether, then I would be very disappointed. I, as of this moment, love KAI. I love their knives, their customer service, all of it... But if this is how they will respond to legitimate concerns, then I will have to rethink that.

KAI, I still think that you are possibly the best company in the knife business, all things considered, but I would really like you to come out and apologize for this crybaby attitude you just took. And that's exactly what it is. Someone is mean to you, so you leave BF????? Are you kidding me??? I will stop buying your knives if that is the way that you handle business. And the previous poster was correct when asking why you would recommend the OP send the knife to the dealer rather than to you. The KAI that I know would nearly insist that the OP send the knife right back to them so that they could make it perfect, as you at KAI have a great reputation for doing. Please don't ruin your stellar reputation. Please apologize for being juvenile and make all of your loyal customers happy.

I used to got the same problem
The key is to keep from putting any pressure on the lock bar.
Now it open like a auto knife.

Just got my new ZT 0777

Detente is awfully strong, and there's an audible click before the blade deploys.
The action is not nearly as smooth as my 0600 or 560CBCF

Knife is significantly off centre

Can any of this be fixed by me?
Loosening / tightening the pivot had no effect.

:-(
All this waiting...

I'm not surprised with the KAI rep/s leaving. They closed the subforum and not just over 1 or 2 incidents. They are all for helping customers with any issues that they have. If they cannot repair it or replace it, they have substituted it with a knife of equal value. They have been very good when it comes to listening to what their customers want. Many new models/new generation knives have stemmed from that.

When people have an issue with a knife, they are upset which is understandable. The first step (other than a mechanically dysfunctional knife) is to contact the dealer to see if they have any more in stock. This was a long awaited limited release, of course, but the fact remains. If the issue cannot be resolved there, the manufacturer should be contacted, which the OP is more than welcome to do. But when threads like this open, they seem to go places that they don't need to go.

Its a lot of money and a long wait for a knife, yes. But the problem remains. IMO, contact KAI by email or phone. They will take care of you.

Exit stage left.

Sigh. This was not what I intended. Really, people should be more constructive around here. I will visit the dealer today and see what happens. Not worried that it won't get sorted out. Just disappointed, I guess, after all this time, and now another 1/2 hour drive back and forth to the dealer. Really, this thread should be closed. I will remove the pic.

Is there something we haven't been forthcoming with?

Sure, but what manufacturer from CRK's down hasn't had a issue go out with a product? The truth is the majority with any manufacturer production is awesome. A very small percentage have problems. To magnify the minority seems a little unfair. To label as the norm or make it to be more than it is, well that doesn't seem right at all.

I recall S30V being crucified on this forum for a looong time. Turned out pretty good steel in the end. The complaints and condemnation are not always accurate here.
That's true. I'm not targeting anyone or any company, just saying that fans do tend to hype some products up and that can muddy the waters when it comes to real world feedback.

don't see it. I may not have the privilege level for it.

I feel bad for the OP not being pleased with his new ZT, I completely understand...we've all waited a long time for "something" only to have an issue with it right out of the box. It happens.

Personally, I would NEVER come here and make negative comments about any brand, any dealer or any fellow member without first contacting them and giving them every opportunity to make things right. Its a bummer that your knife is not centered perfectly (no doubt), yet these are put together by humans so no matter how hard a manufacturer tries, mistakes will happen.

I would have contacted the dealer I bought it from to see if they have any others in stock and/or contacted KAI/ZT about having the issue taken care of...one way or another your knife would have been fixed. When the first move is to come here and state the issues you're having, it can at times, have a snowball effect where some just love to pile on the knife manufacturer regardless of said manufacturer's reputation.

There's a "chance" that the OP is applying pressure to the lockbar while trying to open the knife...switch to the other hand and see if that helps. "IF" this fixes the hard to open issue then other members have already given great advice regarding how to get your blade centered by loosening the screws and re-tightening them after applying pressure on the scales in the direction needed to center the blade. Its very possible that both issues can be taken care of on your own...one "could be" (maybe not) user error and the other, blade centering, can at times be corrected without sending your knife out.

I hope that you're able to have your knife the way you want it ASAP.

Best of luck!

I wouldnt' call it a dud OP, a little off center is nothing but cosmetic, the strong detent might or might not be an issue, can't tell from talk. Hopefully it will break in and smooth out, I would def take it apart and see if I could work it all out.

After that didn't satisfy me would I contact dealer then ZT. it's a really good looking knife with a great steel, to me it is totally worth taking these small steps to hold on to it. Good luck OP and let us know how it turns out.

Couldn't have said it any better.

I'm part of the camp that thinks there is no way in hell it should have ANY defects for what it costs. Should a knife that expensive have an off center blade? No. Should you have to disassemble your brand new knife that costs that much? No.

As far as the car analogy, I worked at dealerships for a good chunk of my life and an issue like this would need to be backed by the manufacturer. Whether it's a repair or an exchange, on a brand new vehicle EVERY company wants to know what's wrong, find out why it's wrong and either offer to fix it, or if it's serious enough, replace it. The dealer does not handle the responsibility, they didn't design or build it. The fact that this is something that cannot be simply swapped out hands even more responsibility to the maker.

I'm not so critical of a tool I will be using and adding my own character to. I guess all the collectors wanting safe queens can worry for the rest of us about a scratch here or there. I'm going to use my knife.

You say you shouldn't have to, ok fine, but if you have issues, why not try and take care of it instead of crying about it? I'm not saying that you are or anything, but I would say we are beyond this sentiment. Limited edition knives don't have tons of parts laying around at the factory to replace so it's kinda what you have to deal with. I just don't see why people wont try and adjust something that is not to their liking.

Thread closed as requested by the OP.

EDIT: Thread has been opened back up as the OP contacted the dealer a was taken care.

UPDATE 11 AM Friday:

I went to my dealer (AS SUGGESTED BY KAI)
Knife was replaced on the spot.
New knife is perfect:
-detent just right, no click
-smooth as silk opening
-centred

Very happy and relieved at this point.

So, please, let's not bash the manufacturer. What KAI said (and took so much &&&& for, was exactly right.

Stuff happens, and it got fixed the right way, and I will start looking out for the next ZT/KAI to add to the collection.

I've also learned something about what to post and not to post (or how to post) with this type of issue in the future.

PEACE.
Now let's close this.
