zt / thinking of ditching the thumb stud for a wave.

the 0 300 is a perfect knife and its ownbut if I were having 1 made it would have a deeper pocket clip and it would waive open. I would rather have a some stud as something to fall back on rather than a primary means of opening the blade.

Just so we're clear here, it's an Emerson open[er]. Wave is a multi-tool made by Leatherman, and trademarked. :p

That being said, I think the Wave is a really great thing. :D

just so we're clear mister Emerson calls it a wave opener but can't call it that officially because of copyrights. that being said it is pretty awesome, and far superior to a regular ol s.s. opener.
Why wouldn't you want near fixed blade deployment speeds, on a knife that is near fix blade strength

I've never really gotten the fascination with the wave. 99 times out of 100, I don't want the blade deployed out of my pocket.

I believe I charged $80 for that but I also double edged and reground that knife as well.

Well, you could get an Emerson and spare your ZT the fate of getting chopped up.

The wave-mania eventually goes away. I rarely carry my Emersons these days.

if you really want to wave a ZT (i wouldn't, personally), i would suggest the 0200 or 0400. the thumbstuds aren't used as bladestops, and the 0400 can be de-assisted safely as the blade has a detent. before you decide to permanently disfigure and uglify the blade though, tap out the thumbstuds first and try the ziptie mod to see if you like it. I have Emersons with the wave feature, and I like it on them. On ZTs....definitely not. I feel their blades are too heavy and wide, wave opening makes them clumsy, and every ground-in example I've seen looks horrible.

Like I said, I modded a SOG Pendulum to add a "Wave" a while back. First I put a split ring on the clip, & I noticed that the thumbstuds would sometimes catch on my pocket when pulling it out. Then I added a washer to move that thumb stud out a bit more to make it more consistent. That helped but I wanted more. So, since it was a free knife, I got some JB Weld & went to work. Now it catches every time & deploys really fast. It may not look the best, but I'm more concerned with how it functions. If I didn't like it, I could easily remove it.

Oh yeah, after a while the tip of the JB Weld did come off, but there is plenty left to still keep it consistent.
I know I could polish out the JBW but I really don't care that much

I will show my ignorance on this one in the hopes that I'm not the only one.
I was under the impression that the groove on the Emersons was a bottle opener...and only a bottle opener. Now, after seeing AdioSS' mod, it is starting to click that this could catch on the pocket on the way out and have the knife deployed by the time it is securely in your hand. Presuming that is the case, I can see pluses and minuses to this. Personally, I won't be doing it to any of my knives, but I could see the use in some, certain instances.

I don't think it's superior at all. There's nothing "regular ol" about the Speedsafe, especially on the 0300 series. You push the tang protrusion, it deploys every time. I've seen a good number of videos "demonstrating" the Emerson open, and almost as often as it works, it doesn't. That to me doesn't count as "near fixed blade deployment speeds". Every time I take a fixed blade from the sheath, it's deployed. No technique or practice required. With an Emerson, there seems to be a real chance it won't deploy as one would hope, and it requires practice to begin with. No practice is required with an assisted flipper. Push the tang, you have knife. To me, that is superior.

Of course, you can do whatever you want with your knife. It's yours, and I wouldn't dare tell anyone what to do with their stuff. I just think that some of the sentiments about how awesome Emerson opening is, is a bit misplaced.

Wave........yick..... Like someone else said, if you want a "wave", buy an Emerson and spare the ZT the ugliness.

The wave is the fastest way to open a folder period. I've grown past that however. This is my current EDC.
