ZT vs Shirogorov

I really don’t get the whole drop shut thing. Why would this be a desirable feature on a knife?

It's not a necessity for me... But I happen to enjoy it from a fidget point of view... In the real world when I'm closing a flipper after cutting something I use my index finger to close it... You can usually adjust the pivot so a knife won't free fall if you don't want... Just because it can doesn't mean you have to close it that way.

There is another thread somewhere about my better half loving her 111. And its a great, smooth and light knife, perfect for her. I vastly prefer my Fulltrack though, the one on washers in particular. Or my 0560 for that matter, as i forget that i might break them when i use them.

Just because it’s expensive, doesnt mean it’s right for you.

Just for the fun of it I handed my friends my ZT 0452 (now sold)and had them open it a few times. Then I handed them one of my Shiro's and watch there eyes go wide as they feel the difference in how smooth it opens and closes. I've even done this with my now sold Hinderer and had the same results.
Is it worth the price difference, that's up to you.

Most ZT are thick behind the edge that the reason why Shiro is significantly better for me, and Shiro HT also seems to be superior too.

I’ve had 20 ZT’s thereabouts and now own none. Have had 4 or 5 Shiro and now own none. Had 3 Olamic, now own none. Guess I don’t have a pony in this race.

This is a super interesting thread with a lot of great knife knowledge.

Now, a question I have for the Shiro experts. If any of you were fortunate enough to score a Holt Specter how would you say the action compares? I’m trying to determine if it’s really worth my time to try to win one of those silly lotteries.

I’m not an “expert” per say, but I have handled a few Holts for extended periods of time.
The Specter is a wonderfully beautiful knife. A flipper that is a pleasure to flick and to use. I would say the action is incredible...just can get over the sound they make when they lock open. Haha.
Definitely on par with Shiro action, and around the same pricepoint as well. For now.

That's not CRK collab knife. The collab model will have CRK logo on the handle.

If there was a true collab...it would need to be a whole new beast! Not this “embellished” previous model. :D My opinion only.
Agreed. Love my Shiros, love my CRKs, but I'm not really a fan of the UG Reeve knives and don't find the CRK-embellished Shiros appealing in any way. They're not true collabs IMHO--they're more like mods or customizations like the F95s R1 was selling with Mayo holes drilled in their handles.

Is it a less desirable feature than perfect centering or smooth/hydraulic action? Neither of those affect cutting performance and a knife with less-smooth action still opens and closes, perhaps with no greater difficulty. For me, drop shut action is a measure of good design and execution like so many other attributes that knife knuts value in their folders.

In practical use I'll close a knife with an index finger flick, or perhaps finish with my thumb, or maybe even against my leg. Drop-shuttiness is indeed more of a fidget factor, but sometimes I close 'em that way too in actual use.

For me my ZTs compare more to my Hinderers, with the Zts feeling factory production like, My CRKs feeling none flipping Koenigs and my Olamics are cool because because of their individuality but nothing feels as well made or as nice as my Shiros. Value is what you believe it to be.

Interesting info. Sounds like if I can ever find one up here in the great white north it’s likely worth the money. Olamic and Reate readily available, may try one of those out first. The cheapest Reate is about $260 for the Hills and the Olamic 247 is $550. Sounds like the Reate may be worth a shot as it’s probably a step up in action and cheaper than most ZT.

Sell them all and get the Shiro or enjoy what I have.

learning to enjoy what you already have can be difficult! (It’s one of my -many- character flaws.)

I think I’ve reached that point with knives and in a way it’s kind of liberating.

It sounds to me like you might need to try a Shiro to reach that point. If your ZT’s bring you joy, hold onto them for now and start saving. Skip over the Olamic & others. If a Shiro is what you want, don’t be distracted.

A Shirogorov F3 and HatiOn Lite brought me to the cusp of custom folders. Which I eagerly jumped on once I saw what real quality could be.

If you have use for a full sized knife, you cannot go wrong with a Shiro F3.

This is good advice right here. It will save you HUNDREDS, MAYBE THOUSANDS of $$$
