The only way to avoid this trend is for the makers to refrain from releasing small lots of custom designs period.
Yeah honestly it's really annoying that they do this

How about the people who stand in line at Best Buy for 12hrs to buy the new gaming system at midnight and then it's on Ebay for double the price within 3 minutes of them getting home. Is that fast enough for you?
New trend??lol What rock you been hiding under? Virtually every ZT LE release has turned into a long whiny/moany bitchfest thread about the "evil" flippers and the "evils of capitalism".
I used to wonder why ZT left BF's..threads like this one remind me why.
They're running out of ideas anyway.
- I carry a ZT0777-M390 around quite a bit and use it to cut anything that needs cutting. I'm not nervous at all about carrying it and using it.I have no interest in the 0392, so I didn't even try to get in on it (too expensive, not my style of blade, etc), but the 0777? I want that. The 0888? I want that too. Too bad I don't have $1.5k in fun money kicking around, or the ability to carry a $1.5k object around with me without being a nervous wreck...
- There are a lot of other companies who sell custom or limited edition knives via lottery that are sold for multiple times what the person bought it for (Hinderer, Emerson, etc.). It's not unique to ZT, but it seems to gain more attention since ZT's are generally easier to obtain than a custom.Fair enough. I guess I wasn't really speaking for the 0392 specifically, but more for ZT LEs in general.
- Except in the case of a limited edition run of the console.I would argue that, while similar, that is fundamentally different in that those consoles will continue to be produced and you can just wait and get one later, for less, and after all of the bugs and hardware issues have been worked out.
When an LE is sold out, it's sold out.
I am just curious how many people actually bought one of these in the interest of using or possibly for collection? The other question I have is the large number of people who bought them all up from under people who wanted them to use, just to flip them for double price the day the come in the mail? I can not see how knife collectors, users, and just plain knife fanatics can just suck up the supply to screw over all of their fellow members on here. I was always happy with how everyone on here would help each other out when needed. Lately, it seems to be the opposite. I have bought and sold my share of knives as well, but not with the sole idea of making money or a huge profit. I tend to impulse buy and if I do not like the knife I either resell for what I paid or (normally) at a small loss. This one is just one more in a long line of this new trend. Is this just a sad sign of the state of things to me or does this bother others as well? Just my 2 cents. Let me know what you think.
No, ZT left because they couldn't handle the truth about problems with certain runs of their knives. Other makers weather the storms and continue to sell knives in spite of forum groupthink. ZT could have done the same. Instead, they took their ball and went home.
As for the ZT limited runs, I'm tired of the whole thing. They're running out of ideas anyway.
But seriously folks, it's a fricking knife. The sun will come up tomorrow regardless of if you get one.
"Screwed" is a state of mind. No one buying a knife on the secondary market is getting screwed, because every single one of them wants to do it. And when someone wants to do something, it can hardly be said that they are screwed. A person is screwed only when he wants to do something and cannot, or is forced to do something he would like to avoid. Secondary buyers don't fall into either category because they are acting in concert with their desires.
I have no problem whatsoever when someone makes money by flipping a knife. That is exactly what vendors are doing too - buying from a 3rd party, raising the price, and selling it. Everyone is free to 1) pay close attention and buy limited edition knives while they are still available, 2) buy to flip, 3) buy from a flipper or 4) none of the foregoing. Laissez faire baby!
This is not unique to the knife world. People buy all kinds of rare or unique items to flip for a profit.
Nothing new here..........
