ZT0550 in ELMAX ???

The earliest reported Elmax 550 is #686, with the latest reporting S35V is #682. So we have a pretty good idea of exactly where it started, and knowing that it is 113 pieces long, it ends somewhere #796 - #799 (assuming all 113 were done in a row from a single mistake).

You all are killing me I just started getting more interested in knives (and posting on here ) and after catching hell for my 560 I just bought and soon to get busted for a 561, you all dangle info like this in front of me.
I highly doubt there is one of these floating around my area but rest assure I'll be checking and buying if so.

lol, well, at least you know the serial number range, so it isn't a crap shoot for ya.

I wonder how something like ELMAX just gets mistakenly put on the knife AND the engraving gets switched. It seems to me like if it were truly a mistake they would still say S35VN, but the engraving would look off because of the steel.

The engraving that is the mistake is on the model # not the steel. The other mistake is that these miss marked 0551 blades were put in a 0550 handle.

Are you sure they are really mistakes, maybe somebody got a funny idea to make super rare 550/1's like a misprint or mis cut on money or stamps?

Either way I don't think it makes much difference unless you wanted a certain handle pattern or blade material, they are both pretty similar.

So my ELMAX 0550 just got a brother today......yup its an 0551!!

So they were 0551 blades that were mismarked 0550, then were put into 0550 handles?

Yes, but not in that order. Laser engraving happens last in production. So the elmax blades were intended for 0551's, put into 0550 handles, then laser engraved as 0550 w/ elmax steel.

Hate to put a big wrinkle in the mix, but hey, I have a number 0849 w/Elmax and an 0858 with S35VN

i have #685 and it is S35VN, so we have pinpointed the start of elmax at #686. can't believe i missed it by 1! :grumpy:

There's a thread here on the British Blades Forum. It seems we were a bit lucky.
