ZTs fixed blades really got expensive

Prices fluctuate, reflecting changes to sub cost elements. This happens across virtually all consumer market goods. Increase in worker wages, fringe benefits, overhead, materials, subcontractors, other direct costs, misc indirect costs, research and development expense pool, and profit margins. Any combination of these elements can affect the net price of the end product.

Asking Kershaw/ZT for transparency is not necessarily fair, as a lot of this information shouldn't be exposed to the competition.

Alright, I'm a machinist, someone want to explain 3d machining to me. You telling me just cause you have the machine move along the Z as well as X and Y, that drives up cost, come on, even if it is a true five axis move so what, you make one program and run it, over and over. It's a handle scale not a wing spar, so it has a slight contour to it, nothing super exotic about s30v, a nice sheath. No way I feel that's a $300 fixed blade. Someone tell me other wise.

I always wondered why the CRK Green Beret was a $300 knife, minus the 50$ cost of the Spec Ops sheath it comes with. For one, they don't get the same fit and finish attention that the Sebenzas do. Two, finishing on those isn't highly sophisticated (GunKote + surface prep, versus satin or high polish.) I've gotten custom/hand made knives from this site for less that still use good and high end stainless steels like 154CM and RWL34.

I'd like a 5.5" Green Beret, but they don't come in plain edge.

SUMMARY:

Fixed blades more than 80$ are useless, hopefully this will save someone time from looking at previous replies expecting any enlightenment

The 0100 is CPM3V, dont know if it is considered exotic, but its better than s30v. As for the machining question, are you just asking a rhetorical question? I think you explained it, unless it is more complicated the x,y and z axis.

Wouldnt a $300 fixed blade still be as useful as a $80 fixed blade?

ZT knives are the best bang for the buck with folders as far as I am concerned. You typically get the same quality and materials--in some cases superior!--in a ZT as you would with a custom or semi-custom folder that costs at least double what you would pay for a ZT. It's just good value.

I'd rather have 3 fixed blades and 2 folders at $300 each than 19 at $80 each. You can't carry or actually use but so much, so id rather have a few with slightly better performance than way more than I could ever use with nothing standing out.

A lot of the "good enough" $80's end up with $100+ in mods or accessories so the perceived value is misleading.

Of course, if you enjoy that sort of thing, then the entertainment itself brings value.

Thank goodness you're here to show us all the way to smart investment. Before you enlightened us, we had no idea if fixed blades more that $XX were useful or not. <-- insert HEAVY SARCASM

my 2cents, shut this one down...
yes:thumbup:. we have reached our answer to their price increase and have heard enough opinions on the matter. the customer can justify the price or move onto a differnt blade. now it is just a bunch of keyboard comando's saying that any knife over $80 is "useless" SHUT IT DOWN!

I was kind of wondering what 3d machining entailed... I suppose it's just to emphasize the fact that some companies only machine a few facets of their materials, leaving the rest to how they were cut from stock maybe? I have noticed some companies pay more attention to machining on say the spine of the knife or the sides of a handle of G10 than others.

As far as CPM 3V goes, doesn't it wear out abrasives significantly faster than other steels? I believe I remember BRKT had to offer their 3V knives with 400 grit finishes no the blades instead of 600 to keep costs down.
