i too was an IT support specialist, last job was with a large ISP as a 24/7 applications support specialist in one of their secure hosting centres. we assembled, configured and installed/deinstalled servers for the clients into our racks, kept them running and made backups of everything onto tapes. lots of fun with a few hundred servers & routers, some of them running international banking for major banks, and stuff for the govt. all centrally monitored. combination of sun, hp and compaq gear. miles of cat5, huge air conditioning plant and security guards all over, access control doors with both mag card locks and thumb print recognition.
anyway, my HP deskjet 5700 printer is set up as a network printer hanging off my router, mostly just to save a usb port. it works fine. only oddity so far there is i can't find where to have it print a test page, so i printed a document.
You always have to do the printer driver dance when a new version of Windows comes out. And once they're released they never work. You call the printer manufacturer and they say their drivers work perfectly but Microsoft broke it with some update or another, so you call Microsoft and they say their software works fine, the printer driver must be broken. Not looking forward to that hassle. At least I can push out new print drivers easily with a GPO.
i know some smiths in hungary & czech republic, tho i've seen some from romania selling some nice axes. no idea on the sword yet. might have a maker's mark. i'll see when it gets here.
On a smaller scale - My mom has an old but perfectly working HP Laserjet. From the era of the USB/Centronic transition. HP wanted to catch up fast on the USB technology so they made a Centronic to USB cable that needed weird HP drivers to work. Nice HP folks didn't port the drivers to win7 and forget about Win8. So when I upgraded my mom's computer we went for Windows 8.1... Couldn't get the f-beep-ing printer to work.
Then my 70 years old mom said... Don't you have an old winXP running in a virtual machine at home?
me - Euh yeah why???
her - Well why don't you "make" one on my new computer and use the XP drivers in it?
me - you know what, that could work...
And it did. Not the most elegant way but it did. She had that "I told my son what to do with a computer" face for months.
Yall never fail to strive to make me look stoopid, but you do it very very well.
Maybe yall could create a virtual computer what a cave man like bawanna could work. I just want one that does what I want when I want it and not send me no nasty messages or tell me what to do like all the violets I work with ya know.
Pretty simple. Simple is good.
Sweet Mary and Joseph, gurkha berserka a IT specialist? Who knew, did I know? I don't think I knew.
I had you pegged as a logger or a longshoremen or maybe one of them strong man competitors where they pull busses up hills and push giant redwoods end over end for 3 or 4 miles.
This is a bit of a let down buddy.
