Did you go with Microsoft DOTD - Free Windows 10?

From what I've heard, you don't have to upgrade your install of Windows to 10 right away. You can start the process, tell it to make media and then upgrade when you want. You just need to run the upgrade thingy to link your system to Windows 10, then you have a year to do the upgrade or longer.

The Windows 10 Upgrade program allows you to download the files, then make your own install disk for a clean install. I'm doing this, then sometime I'll do a clean install. I'm pretty happy with Windows 7 (I liked it back when it was still in the public preview). Once I figure out how to do certain things in Windows 10, I'll consider doing the upgrade via a clean install.

startmenux gives you your xp-ish menu with extra bells and whistles. i have the pro version, there is a free version ith a few less whistles.

p.s. - bookie did NOT invent blu ray. he was on the intel team that designed the i7 4 core cpu. he's shy, so he'll probably deny it.

Lmao.....Mr. B. You need to join the crowd. I've got books, tapes, and course programs to loan. If you're ever so inclined...:)

Admittedly for a deaf dude like me email is a godsend. That and this here forum to hang out on are just about all I need in a computer. My dad shortly before his passing several years back asked if he should get a computer.
My answer was dad, you've gone more than 70 years, had a good life, why screw it up now with a dang computer.
He did get a cell phone, one of them newer ones that didn't have the dial but it folded up nice.

I am playing with 10 now. God I wish they just stuck with 7... Such a user friendly and tech friendly OS.

Except for @$$!%&*(^$# Edge, It's actually not that bad. Haven't start playing with the policies yet but I found it pretty tech friendly so far.

If you know what you are looking for and just can't find it with the new interface... The GOD Mode hack is your friend and it still works in Windows 10.
https://4sysops.com/archives/windows-10-godmode/

Just create a new folder on your desktop and rename it to(without the quotes):

"GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}"

Then use the search field for keywords. It's magical! :D

Ive got some 8-track tapes and LP's I can send him to get him up to speed. Send the AC/DC to Bookie when your done tho.

Im watching all of you guys play with 10 before I do it. Im just getting used to 7 now. What ever happened to Windows 9? Bad number? Seems like they skipped it?

Wildman: You need hard drive? I have some extra WD 500G laptop drives. Ill send you a Terrabyte just because your a wildman:D

I just read an article about Windows 10. I think everyone should be aware of the spyware that comes with the new OS. Its free for a reason... Please read before upgrading

They see how well Google is doing so they tried it themselves. Google snoops the subject line in every email you send. When you do a search they capture that. When you clear your history what they mean by obliterate from your computer is just that. They obliterate from your computer and send it off to someone elses server. ok ndog...read the article now while the hair is still standing on the back of your neck.

HA!!

“Free Windows and a free trip to the doghouse. Thanks Microsoft!”
just what I need.

Never Never:
-put your pictures in the pictures folder
-put your documents in the documents folder
got the idea

I miss:
typing c: Dir/p/w
copy con autoexec.bat
booting up in 15 seconds
shutting down in 15 sec
when the escape button actually worked
when you had administrator rights to do any dang thing you want to your computer because it belongs to you!
checkdisk and of course "Park":D

Opt in vs. Opt out default. They make it almost impossible to opt out and most of the time you wont know what to opt out of in the first place because you dont know what they are doing to you.

Personally id rather pay for a product that is market free. Maybe Microsoft needs to hire Edward Snowden:D

I knew it was true for the preview insider versions but for "most" of what is applicable to the retail version, it can be turned off. That is if you trust the ON/OFF switch.

MS is spying on our credit cards just as much as ebay, Paypal, Amazon or any other site you trow your credit card at.

Don't get me wrong, we have every reasons to worry about Privacy. With the cloudification of everything, it's becoming very difficult to know where your data is and who has access to it for what purposes. Lots of people are watching the big guys and it's a good thing. Those big corporations get sued and slapped with serious fees on a regular basis. We need to be careful of what we share.

This said, I'm not ready call up front Win10 as big brother's new surveillance toy.

You wanna hear something funny? I have been an IT specialist for almost ten years. I DON'T have a computer or the internet at my house, just my iPhone6. I don't want to look at computers (except this forum and Bullpup forum :D) in my off time. I have people trying to give me side work all the time. I always reject it.

I refuse to have that data line running in my house. I don't even have cable! I have an outside antenna and I get free TV in HD. My wife and I decided to cut the cord a couple years ago. We have never been so happy. TV numbs you and focuses your third eye on the trivial. Billions are spent every year trying to figure out what color, or sound, or smell will entice you to spend the all mighty dollar. Don't get me started on the all might dollar either.

People think the eye on the dollar bill is "gods" eye. Its NOT... its our/everyones third eye. It represents our focus, or servitude on money and the banking system. People really don't understand how powerful we all really are. We all have amazing abilities, but we spend to much time locked in desire. All desire is suffering... There is an old saying "Money is the route of all evil". That is actually in incorrect version. The correct version is... "The PURSUIT of money is the route of all evil".

Just look into the MK Ultra garbage they are pushing. The entertainment industry is run by very evil people, especially in the last decade or so. They have satanic rituals on stage and no one even realizes it. Superbowl half time, Mtv music awards, ect.. all have ritual s built into them. Im not a god nut, please don't confuse me with one of them. Not that there is anything wrong with going to church. I was force fed Catholicism at a young age and lost my taste for religion. I am however a very spiritual person. I have been a practicing Free Mason for 17 years. I know ritual when I see it. Sorry to go off on a rant... just be aware of your third eye, and beware of people seeking to control it. We are very powerful individuals when we are thinking for ourselves.

I dont blame you gb. My family always comes to me to repair their computers. I wouldnt mind but they are too cheap to pay for virus protection and such so I dont even do that any more. I tell them to just buy another one. I have my sisters laptop here now and is so damaged i had to wipe the drive clean and start all over. Of course most people dont keep a backup or recovery disk so they are screwed if their boot sector or registry gets fubared.

Lots of sensitive subjects there. I'll rather not go because those almost always lead to derailing.

Desires and dreams are not bad in themselves. The problem is when we start missing the difference between what we need and what we want. More so when we create unneeded dependencies that negatively affect happiness.

Anyone with something to sell will try very hard to convince you it's a need.
You are absolutely right. We are very powerful individuals when we are thinking for ourselves.

:D I didn't mean to go off on a rant. You are absolutely correct about the derailing. I sense you understand what I was trying to convey. Thinking for one's self is the first step. Sorry for the rant, I keep seeing all the sheeple waiting for the herder to lead them.

No need to apologize my friend.

There is nothing wrong with followers. We just need to be prudent and not too gullible.

I also have to admit, we are so much flooded with information and contradictions - it's hard to find/see the truth.

Abstinence is a choice I respect. Personally, I prefer safe sex and that's why my Win10 is in a sandbox.

the fickle finger of fate writes, and moves on. nothing is forever. all thing change, even change changes.

win10 is here, we may as well get used to it while it is. it too shall pass.

also, remember, paranoia is not a small country in europe. that's why i have a software firewall/security suite that can block all comms with any domain by IP address that i blacklist. including microsloth. and i use a secure encrypted dns server that does not record/log anything.

you can also block microsoft by use of the pc's HOSTS file. for windows, it's in your windows/system32/drivers/etc folder. (no extension)

this file is a leftover from way-way back when microsoft 1st started, and there were no dns servers to translate the human friendly domain names like www.microsoft .com into a computer friendly n IP address like 173.223.179.235. it is a list of numbers and names that the computer can use without connecting to the web, having real addresses speed up connecting a bit, but using 127.0.0.1 (also called 'localhost') or 0.0.0.0 for all addresses of domains you want to block redirects the pc back onto itself. it is effectively your pc which of course is not hosting the blocked site. anyway if you add lines to yours (use a text editor like notepad & save it back without the txt extension) such as

#append to your real hosts file
#anytyhing after a # is a comment
127.0.0.1 www.microsoft.com #microsoft's real main site that redirects you to their real host on akmai at 173.223.179.235
127.0.0.1 updates.microsoft.com #and so on and so forth, get a full list from googling, research is good for you
127.0.0.1 any.other.domain.name.com.

see the "mvps hosts" web address below, he makes & maintains pre-made lists of hundreds of 'bad' domains to add to your hosts file to make it more secure. (it doesn't have MS in it)

the IT specialists here of course already know this, but the rest may benefit with a little experimentation.

# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost

Awesome info! Thanks for sharing it.

Trouble is you have to be an IT specialist to figure out all this virus security and IP blocking lingo and such.
I try to install that stuff and it comes back with stupid questions with words I don't even know what they are and go places I didn't know I had.

Heck I messed up AVG Free, picked the wrong button or something. Had a friend smarter than me, ok all my friends are smarter than me but this one figured it out.

When it gets sick I just give it the 12 gauge and go get another one, let the geek squad at the store make it turn on and stuff and let change change.
