0777 on FS Forum Getting Top Dollar

I'm honestly contemplating putting some of the damascus I got in this run up on ebay. My original plan was to keep some and use some for gifts, but we may be buying a new house soon, and if the money's there, I'd be stupid not to use it. Guess I'm a bad person too.

Sell it for what you can get. I've made thousands reselling discontinued Spydercos.

I started thinking about it and I think that I may have been a little too conservative with my previous estimates. Yes, there are going to be a thousand 0777's made..........which is double the number of TiLTs out there in the world. I guess my thought process WAS that if I was able to get a TiLT ( at around $375, I think ), that it shouldn't be that hard, down the road, to find an 0777 for sale. I also managed to buy a Volt 3600 ( I'm not sure what the production numbers are on those, but they're pretty hard to come by ) and you still see Speedform I's for sale from time to time on here and ebay, even though I think they were fairly low production, as well. ( Anyone who knows the production numbers for the Volt 3600 and Speedform 1, I'd love to know what they were )

Now, that being said, none of those are the 0777. Sure, the Speedform won accolades, the TiLT is a ridiculously cool and rare knife, and so is the Volt 3600. However, someone made a good point in saying that the majority of buyers are buying them because they are collectors, so of that 1000, I'd venture to say that 60%-75% are going to disappear into collections. Sure, there will be a few folks who are just looking to turn them for a profit and there will be others that either don't like it or decide that they'd like to sell it because they would like to have the money to buy something else. At first, I felt that ( and this may have been wishful thinking on my part ) once all 1000 hit the buyer's hands, that the secondary market would end up with enough available for the price to drop below $600. As I think about it now, I'm under more of the impression that the price will more likely settle in around $700+.

The $900-$1000+ that people are asking right now is obviously a bit high, but there are folks paying anywhere between $480 and $600 for them from the stores. If the TiLT retailed at $260 and are now selling near $400, thats a 65% increase in price. Average between $480 and $600 is $540.00. a 65% increase on that price equals around $890. Figure that is a bit high due to more people paying around $500 including shipping, etc than those paying $600 and you're looking at around $800-$850.

Of course, I may be wrong, but if I'm not able to get one at a much better price than that. I gotta say I'll be very disappointed.

Anyway, just my take on the situation.

I see this as a different situation. Youre not getting on a LE knife list, taking another knife lovers spot just to mark up the knife to an insane level.

Ive had knives I collected, then I decided to change my collecting "practice." I sold them at market price, if I sold them cheap, someone else would snatch it up to flip it anyways. These guys arent just collecting then selling later, their purpose is to sell to the desperate knife soul and double their money. A total douche bag move. And there are 1000 of these being made. Not that rare really

"Making ends meat" isn't a justification for doing shady things.

I agree. I got a Damascus skyline, and I am considering selling it now. I don't like knives I don't use, and I am not sure I can bring myself to use the beautiful Damascus blade. Plus I think the Damascus will have inferior edge retention, not sure. Anyway, some of these guys posts make me feel like a bad dude for reselling a knife I bought. Like they will come on here and start a new thread "jvarn81 is selling his Damascus skyline for more than he paid for it, what a bad guy"

If you don't like someone's price, don't buy it.

My EXACT sentiments today when I received my Damascus skyline. Awesome little knife. Screams use me use me. I've seen what they are going for on the bay so I won't use it. I would probably be 90 percent as happy with a regular skyline I can use. It's just too pretty to use. It's not my style for an EDC. It's catching a great price on the market. I could use the money for other things. The only reason I haven't listed it is because I probably did take another knife lovers spot away and I would feel bad selling it for a profit now. I think I'll keep it and give it to my son in a few years. If he uses it great! If he sells it for something other than drugs, great! I've had inner turmoil all day long when I curiously looked on eBay. Damn you eBay!

I have a chance to buy 2 0777's. Bought one today and waiting on another preorder. I'm buying 2 incase I miss out on the 0560cbcf and will try to trade one of my 0777's for it. If I get a 0777, a 0600 and a 0560cbcf I plan on using them at my dirty job(plumbing) for pretty much everything I'd use an exacto for. I'd rather get my moneys worth on my knives and continue to learn first hand on the performance of these exotics steels on these exquisite knives instead of letting them look nice in a safe... Can't wait to get my first 0777 and cut up some stuff!

lucky! lol, havn't been called for my preorder with kguy, was following some stores, took a nap, in that mean time, it showed up, and sold out lol. What luck :p.

I don't have much of a problem with people flipping them... at least when it doesn't seem so exorbitant. As others have stated, we don't HAVE to buy them, and they are free to do as they please. As well as the fact we don't know their circumstances. Its a very fine line in some ways imo. Although I must confess, I do get a bit heart wrenched when I see a retailer selling for way over msrp, say in the 800+-1000$ range. Makes you think: whos worse, the flipper or the seller in this case lol [selling at msrp etc is not wrong imo, but when its almost double I start to get bulgy eyed - I think a friend used the term "extortion"]

The problem isn't sellers posting them at that price, but people willing to buy them at that price. Same deal with gun accessories and receivers in this political craze.

Thing is a knife like this sure isn't something you absolutely have to have. It's not like gas, food, or electric.
So, if somebody wants to pay it's a choice. Not something they have to have in order to survive. I've got over thinking I must buy every new latest greatest that comes out. Especially when they are limited and going for a a lot extra. Chance comes along down the road without paying too much I might, but I can't worry over it and have time/money to worry about the things I must have.

If you don't like someone's price, don't buy it.

So the steel's edge retention and your desire to not use it because of the Damascus pattern are things that ONLY occurred to you after you bought it at regular price and then received it? If that's the case, then I'm sure you'll sell it to someone who missed out on the retail sales and really really wanted one for themselves, at not much more than you paid for it, right? That would be the right thing to do for the community, wouldn't it?

^That's some of the most honest conjecture on this so far. The interest in selling it is financial gain, and yes, you likely got one that someone else missed out on that wouldn't sell it. Should you feel bad? I don't think so, because you acknowledge the reality.

Should people feel bad for wanting to turn a profit? No, not at all. However it's disingenuous to candy-coat in this "Oh...I'll never use it...it's TOOO BEAUTIFUL!! Not really my style..." and then turn around and say "Well, this knife isn't for me, and I only realized it right after I bought it out from under someone else who would have kept it...soooo TWICE THE PRICE FOR MY FORUM COMMUNITY BUDDIES!!!!!"

Obviously, that's not verbatim, but it's the vibe that's in the sale threads. It's nonsense, and no one has the grapes to just say "I bought this, and now I'm selling it for what seems to be the market price". You want to post stuff like "Don't like the price? Don't buy it." then be consistent and have some integrity. Don't lie to people, because that's exactly what is going on with these knife flips.

Huzzah for the community!

There was a 0560 or two went for 400 when they first came out and it's not even limited. They were flying off the shelf for 260 from dealers too. Now you can snag one for about 200 if you look around. If people can't wait, or they are afraid there may not be enough made and they can spare the cash let them pay!

I didn't get in on the brand new Tilts, but I managed to trade into two down the road. I'd love to have a 0777 but if I don't get one there's other stuff I like and who knows what may pop up when they're all out there.

I could not agree more. Jill is one of the savviest buyers on the forum. Who would pay over $900.00 for a $300.00 knife?

I was at a NYCKS one year, and I was talking to a custom knifemaker at his table about who makes the best folders around. Adjacent to his table, RJ Martin was having a lottery and we took out our cards, then he (the knifemaker) said "man, I hope I win. I would sell the $h1t out of that knife, triple my money on the spot, and buy an Emerson CQC-7". I thought that was pretty funny. Financial gain? Hell yea. I've thought about buying a 777 and flipping it, why not? People do it all the time even with knives that aren't limited editions and sprint runs.
