1/300 SHBM Mod!

What I think would be great would be to have Busse come out with a CGFBM that has no corrugations and is flat ground with a starting thickness of 0.22 or so. This anorexic FBM would be nearly identical to Bans knife and would be a killer.

Really thick knives are great to look at but when you swing hard they wear you down fast.

So lets hear it for an Anorexic FBM.

I'm in the same boat :D......even better though....an anorexic SH with a 10'' blade :) that would be pretty sweet too! Either way I'd be SOO stoked. I'd like one at .200 though....

Yeah. It's mine. SEND IT BACK!!!!! ROTFL!

(I wish!)

And I have one of them elusive ZTBM's. I may have stolen it, based on how cool it is to handle. Most mirror-like satin finish I've ever seen on a Busse. Hence my reluctance to use it on anything but beheading infidels.

How's the ZTBM? I've been wanting one for a while but I don't know if it would be too light to be a good chopper....is it? The balance on the BM-e was a little wierd for me...I always thought the ergo series was a little too handle heavy...although I've always liked the SH-e for a all arounder

In general like the look and feel of the SHs more than the Fusions. But I prefer the standard fusion handles when I have to do lots of chopping. No MAGs for me please. It is just more comfortable to me for long term use.

Either way, I would buy at least a few if Busse came out with a Anorexic BM.

The Secret is to find an SHBM that you can full power chop with with out pinching your little finger, then to use that one and never, ever sell it.

Seems a little easier to find in the So Called One of Three Hundred, they do make Great users.

+2

I have handled a few SHBMs and this particular 1/300 felt the best to me. I am not quite sure why it feels better though

Just to give an idea as to finishes below are some factory satin jobs to compare too. These are pics I pilfered off the forum over time:D

some have the dimples and some don't.

Cobalt,

Looking over the pics.... I know why your 1/300 feels better than the other SHBMs that I have handled. I am pretty sure it has something to do with those smooth hand shaped micarta handles. I remember the other handles feeling a bit too blocky for my hands.

You should start a thread with this to be sure it is seen.

I like fat users but I like them less fat too. So a FBM at about .21 to .24 full flat grind would be a killer knife. Skunk should get a batch of them for the store.

In fact I wish he'd get some more regular old CG FBMs.... with micarta:cool: .

Yep I agree  More micarta CGFBMs please.

I think a .2-.22 Full Flat Ground FBM is about ideal. Not too thin where it would be too flimsy but also not too thick so that it is easily packable and handles wells.

I was talking with Cobalt today and we were talking about edge thickness. So because I have been stuck in the house sick for a week and ran out of things to do I measured the edge thickness of some BMs 1/10 of an inch in from the edge. There were SHBMs and stock FBMs and Justabuyers FBM that he put a convex edge on.

SHBM 1-300 .053

CGFBM from JustABuyer - .057

CGFBM -.07 This one has not be used so remember that the coating is still there.

J. Assult SHBM - .065 made from a 1-300 blank (well that is what he said when he sold it to me) also this has not be used or sharpened. The other 1-300 has been used plenty and I sharpen convex so the user should be thinner.

SHBM - .55 again this has not been used and is coated

FBM SE -   .053 NEVER been used

FBM LE -.057

The JAB FBM is one of the sharpest knives I have had.

I'm not trying to make a point here just some data.

Tony G.

Just to compare; a .165 custom AD same distance from edge .044

Tony,

I usually measure right up to the point where the edge bevel ends approximately about 1/16" away from the edge. The edge thickness can tell you a whole lot about the performance of the knife. But you also have to factor in the primary bevel geometry to get the whole picture.

I don't doubt that your JAB's sharpened knife is the sharpest knife you own. He sure knows how to put on beautiful polished edges on any knife.

Here are some measurements of knives I have on hand.

FABM .034
Cobalt's 1/300 SHBM .032 originally is was about .034
Anorexic BIBB .032
ASH1 .050
HHFSH .050
FFBM .055

Well I'm not remeasuring, after being sick for a week I'm off to the GF's house, she may have a DICK polish for me. That is what I asked for for St. Val's day.:cool:

I have owned about a hundred SHBMs, with at least 16 or so of the So Called 1 of 300 among them, the 1 of 300 more commonly feel better in use, they often feel better just to hold even, maybe just more magic in them.

When thunking them to hear them ring they sometimes sound like they are made of glass, real odd.

I think I am currently down to four or so, with three of those being of the 1 in 300 style, but tough to be sure just how many without actually looking, I know that I have at least the four mentioned.

Isn't true that the 1/300 were heat treated quite a bit harder than the standard SHBMs? I think they were something like 62rc.

I noticed that they also seemed to be ground thinner than the standard SHBMs. At least from what I can tell from the ones I saw and handled.

I think it is up to the individual. Most of the ones I have had, have had that lively feel. This one here is a good example:

116_1610.jpg

notice the 1/16 inch bevel all the way down the spine.....

.

here are just a few variations. They all have different grinds.

I'm sure Ban could put that bevel on all of yours!
