And time for a 1000 post giveaway game.
I have here a PSK Brushcraft knife that I made and it needs a job. This knife is just perfect for whittling a pointy stick to pick up trash with. So here is my rules to win this knife.
You commit to make your wilderness area better in anyway you see fit to.
Post here "I'll make it better"
I'll put your name in a hat and next Sunday 1-25-2009 I'll draw a name from the hat.

This is based on the honor system.

In case your wondering my motive the fires we have had here in California have played havoc. I took my first very short hike since I broke my leg nearly 3 years ago. I could only go about a half mile and my leg was threw. In that half mile I found where a very old Sycamore had burned down. All around the stump was bottles and trash. Some of that trash had been buried for years, only being uncovered by the burn. I picked up what I could Carry and headed back to the trail head. Some youths saw me pick up some trash and they picked some up on there way out. I think this spring I'll plant a Sycamore.

"I'll make it better"

I take a bag with me when I go packing/hiking; I've never not been able to bring it back full of trash. :grumpy:

Great idea for a giveaway!

I ALWAYS pick up trash when I'm able to. It drives me absolutely insane to see trash in remote ares. I've seen large items way out there where I'm not even sure how it would have gotten out there.

The wife and I keep talking about it, but need to do it. We want to get involved in some trail clean up programs.

Thanks for the chance and a great knife! I'd love to whittle a pointy stick :)

Thats a great thing to do. I often pick up trash, and I maintain the mountain bike trails in certain parks. I am also a volunteer for the Katy trail, part of the Rails to Trails program here. Its so easy to get involved. We gotta take care of it,so it can take care of us.

I do the same when I go fishing. I keep a couple of the plastic grocery store bags in the tackle box.

I try to make it better. My local community goes litter picking along the Hirose River near where I live, we were even on TV last year :) I also enjoy stunt-kiting at my local beach in Shioghama, so I sometimes help the surfers when they clear the beach. Seeing as we are on the east side of Japan, it's a big job.

I'll definately make my area better.

I already started before winter hit. Every couple weeks I go out to a few public hunting and fishing areas and clean up all kinds of garbage. I hate it when I go fishing on the Maumee River and there are styrofoam worm containers and fishing line just sitting there. Almost every time there is also the things that go around 6- packs. Very disturbing. When hunting public places I always take an extra bag to clean up the area when I am done hunting.

I should really read more carefully - I'll make it better. (As per opening post)

I always try to pack out more trash than I packed in so to speak. It's never hard, even in some of the more remote areas of the UP that I love so much. Beer cans and shell casings are always around, I really don't see what's so hard about picking up your casings as best as you can when you're done shooting. If you don't reload yourself, maybe someone you know does, and rimfire cartidges can be collected for scrap metal. When I was on the University of Michigan rifle team we always had enough by the end of the year to throw a party. And I love finding beer cans in the woods, it's ten cents for every one that you pick up. Anyway I'm going to keep on doing what I'm doing, and maybe try to find some new ways to get involved. It will get me into the woods more, so thats never a bad thing.

Thanks for the opportunity for what looks like a really cool knife.

I try to keep it better than I left it every day, but "I'll make it better" in another way whenever possible.

Very good thread idea though! I know we all try our hardest to be excellent stewards of our local environments and it's just 'assumed' that we all do it, but reminders of something so important aren't a bad thing!

That's something I love about Ray Mears' videos. He does a good job showing ways to give back to the woods while using its resources. But he does it in a really non-condescending, no-preachy way.

congrats on the 1000 post Mike.. cool looking knife and a cool giveaway too.. :) i'm in..

i was taught at a very young age to respect nature and the world we live in.. i have always done my best to "make it better"... and will continue, even more so with this cool knife of yours...:D

I save my Marlboro light Butts in an altoids tin and throw them in the garbage at home
I HATE being in the woods in a remote area and looking down and seeing cig butts

Ill make it better. I've been out of the woods for a while but I plan on taking it up again. There is an old bottle dump about a mile in from my house. Its been there since before we moved here (40 yrs). I remember there being lots of old colored bottles and some so old they had no seams.

+1 on the butts fishing line is a pet peave too. I think Ill start clearing up my old woods haunts.

count me in

I always do what I can in the woods too keep them the way it should be...and I will never change that...one thing i do is to help the local state park re-blaze their trails so that most of the people will stay on them and minimize impact

great contest

What I was thinking  A reminder.
The tree that was burned was a grant old tree. I'll put one back there, it'll never be so grand in my life time. More importantly to set an example for others to be good stewards.
