1000 post

I'll make it better!!

Actually that was the reason I got my BSc in Biology, unfortunately I have only been able to partake in one study of Eider Ducks in the arctic ocean. We stayed by an old home site that one of the inuit I worked with grew up at. There was an island 2-300 yards off of shore that they covered in trash. Even 20 years later there was a disgusting amount of refuse. This disgusted me to no end as the group very much describes themselves as stewards of the land, but in practice many do not follow their own words.

I also clean up my urban wilderness area wherever I can. I keep a couple of sets of rubber gloves in my vehicles so that I can remove used needles and condoms from the "slums". I don't need to hear of little kids getting Hep C or worse from a needle I could have disposed of. I am also usually the last one out of a camping site after everybody else is "good enough to go".

Thanks for the opportunity (did I mention that RED is my most favorite color in the world- that knife would go great with my red survival staff, red Canadian special, red slippies.... Hmmmm.... not giving away a red axe anytime soon are you). Ok, I kid. I am sure I am not cute enough to sway you with flattery, but this is indicative of the attitude on this forum, and for that I thank you all.

Congratulations on the 1000th post and great idea for a giveaway!!
count me in. am frustrated as to how people do not give a S@#$ about the area they're in. will promise to make my area better.
thanks for the giveaway!

Congrats on the 1000. I try and clean up every time I go out, and will continue to do so. Hope I get the knife. Thanks for the awsome give a way sir, even if I dont win.

I'll make it better!

I live just off the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River ( a very polluted river) outside of D.C..I usually pick up after others here and there, but on my next hike I will take a big 55 gallon drum liner trash bag and fill it up before heading home.

Congrats on 1000 posts and thank you for the giveaway!! -DT

I'm in! I pickup beers cans and bottles from a place my family frequents. Drives me NUTS that people would trash such a nice place, but I'm happy to help clean it up for others to enjoy.

I could fill up 10 bags when I go to the shooting range...I ALWAYS take something home with me!
In the hills it isn't as bad, but I do find some stuff.
I've preached this to my son and now he picks stuff up also.
I'll continue to do this even if I don't win

Thank you for the contest, and I hope your leg continues to recover.

I'll make it better!

I always hate seeing the beautiful wilderness ruined by trash and pollution and I always try to clean up what I can. Thanks a bunch!

Great idea for a giveaway

A good deal of my woods time is spent in the second largest state park in New York which is only 35 miles away from Manhattan. There are parts of some trails, thankfully not a heck of a lot, where there is a seriously disturbing amount of trash. I would need some contractor bags and a pickup truck to get rid of it all  But I usually pick up stray trash that seems more like it got accidentally left behind. When I'm way off the trail I still run across trash in the form of those shiny, semi-metallic balloons that have probably drifted in from many miles away. I always pick those up and always will. Really wish they were more biodegradable :grumpy:

This is a great idea for a giveaway. I don't think that I have ever come back from a trip without having a little bit of extra trash that I didn't produce. Its sad but everyone clamors about wanting to keep or make new parks but they don't care for the ones we already have.

Oh and congrats on the post count and thanks for the give away.

I'll make it better. I hate seeing plastic bags on beaches, it's the one thing I always see that drives me absolutely nuts. Beer cans on trails is the second. Congrats on 1K, thanks for the opportunity, and I hope your leg gets better so you can get back out there!

edited to add:

One of the coolest experiences I've ever had occurred while "making it better." Back when I was in the 6th grade my class took a trip to the Big Island of Hawai'i for a week. A few students out of the class were selected after writing essays to take a trip into the forest while the rest of the class did a hike of Kilauea's Halema'uma'u crater. I was one of the kids selected to go to the forest, and we were taught how to plant endemic Koa in the old Hawaiian way as part of our school's Koa reforestation effort. It is hands down one of my greatest memories, and I am glad I had that chance to help our native ecosystem in such an amazing way, as opposed to being a mere spectator on a hike.

I am very pleased with the response to this post. Got the warm/fuzzy feel that this is a good thing. I would like to point out that there is many ways to make it better. I know that there are a few who maybe cant get out as much as they want. Lot of other things can make a difference.

I plant 10 trees a year in it. I'll make my wilderness area better. Thanks Mike.

Ill make it better.

Like everyone else here, my pet peeve is littering. If you find a piece of trash on the 40 acres I frequent then I just havent found it yet.

People who throw their trash out , I just dont know what to think. Even traveling through a beautiful place like Yellowstone, you will find trash strewn throughout.

Ive picked up so much trash in my neighborhood that one elderly man laughs and calls me "The Garbage Man".

Congratulations on your 1000 post!
In San Diego, you should plant the sycamore in the late fall, and pray for some rain! If not you may want to plant it with some polymers to hold water in the soil this spring. Great idea! All I can say, is that I teach my children, all 6 of them to take more trash out than what we pack in. We fished at Lake Casitas Jan 1 and all of us picked up more trash than we brought. Oh yeah, we also left all the fish in the lake! We got skunkerood.
