1000th Post Give Away...Contest is over.

Another here who is not a Beckerhead. I've never owned one.

Over the years, I have noticed nearly every Becker giveaway requires one to be a Beckerhead to enter.

The "you have to already own one, and have joined the club to win one" always seemed counter productive to bringing new owners into the fold.

Glad you opened this one up to everyone. Even though the knife is one of yours, not a Becker.

Good on ya.

With that said, I would love a shot at that knife.

This is very generous of you Col. I'll toss my hat in the ring for it very gladly. (BH#131)

Any chance we can find out more about the blade? It looks like either the blade was ground down more in the blank, or after HT you raise the part where the ricasso would go? Its hard to tell from the photos. Either way, it looks excellent. I hope to eventually have a place to attempt to make my own knives (stupid housing prices are so high here in CA that I'm stuck in an apartment for now).

Thanks ocnLogan. Not totally sure I understand the question, but...the blade was cut out of a 1/8" thick piece of 1084. Then name stamped while it was still totally flat, and then ground to a bevel forward of the plunge line. The confusion, if there is any, might be that the cell phone pic does not clearly show that the ricasso, behind the plunge line and the rest of the steel which will eventually be the handle is already thicker than the actual blade part. Since the pic you saw, a couple more holes have been drilled in the handle to improve balance. HT is next.

Thank you for opening this GAW up. I can't wait to see the finished knife whether or not I luck out.
Thanks again Col

Sorry, I was a bit unclear now that I go back and read through my own post again :/. Let me try to explain more what I meant, but this time with new and improved sentences :).

I was just saying, that compared to the other photo you showed of the finished model of knife, the blade edge was "higher up" on the knife (up when viewed from the side, not the spine), making the ricasso appear to extend farther down the knife (somewhat similar to how the Chord height of a BK7 is different than a BK9). I was wondering if it looked different because it wasn't finished yet, and that portion of the ricasso was going to be raised to/made level with the edge of the blade. Also, the handle seems a bit larger (I'm assuming so that it can be shaped more after the handle scales are on), which made it hard to figure out if the ricasso was "lower" or not from just the one photo.

And I want to make sure you know that this is not an attack on the knife or your work at all, I'm just curious, since I think I may try my hand at knife making at some point in the future, and I'm trying to understand the process. The knife really does look excellent, and whoever wins this GAW is one lucky guy.

Congrats on the 1k posts again :).

Because I do all this "by hand" no two knives I make are truly identical even though in theory I now have several defined models. But in practice when I make one it so far always has tiny differences from its predecessor. Some differences just happen and others are because I think I have found a way to improve the model. That is definitely the case with the larger handle - when I finished the damascus version for a friend, my own criticism was that it would have been better with a thicker handle, so that is what I did on the GAW knife Good luck on your future knife making!

Congratulations on the 1k Col. I have never owned a handmade knife. would respectfully request to be in.

Thanks for the response Col Defender, I really appreciate it. And really, its not a criticism of your work at all, I was honestly just curious. I've been starting to lurk in various other knifemaking areas of the forum, reading/learning for when I might eventually get to try my hand at doing it on my own. For how, I've just been doing handle scales, and have been thinking about getting into sheaths first.

Anyway, thanks again for the GAW.

You are very gracious Col. Thanks for the chance, I'm in.

This maybe taken very poorly by some, but it has principle. And Col. You may disqualify for this if you wish. If I win, I would like my prize to go to a paying member. Or a person who has invested time and knowledge, i.e. has posted at least 150 post. I wish to use this to motivate people into supporting this site. With money, time & or knowledge.

And I would rather commission a knife from you, to support your work. than take one from you. Does your heat treat guy do 440c by chance?

That time stamp looks bad. It's only 1:23am I swear it
