105 (now 106) GEC Giveaway - A Counting Game - WINNER ANNOUNCED!

Nice one Ron!:thumbsup: A fine yet modest Gent, very pleased for you.

Lot of work organising this Barrett and I'm glad you got a peerless judge to do the drawing

Would have hoped more people had taken part, but perhaps they got put off by us old sweats dominating it with multiple posts...hope not. If I ever hold a GAW again (outta ideas...but not knives) I might set a MAXIMUM participation bar ;):D
Thank you for your kind words Will! :D

Wow, now we're getting into some serious philosophical stuff. All I can say is, that if you combine -12000 and -12000 (-12000 plus -12000) you end up with -24000. You need to multiply the negative numbers to get positive.
"8-x=20; x= -12" according to my former (who knows? possibly late) college Algebra teacher. (somehow that I fail to comprehend, that "+8" turned into a "-8")
Maybe I should have subtracted the negative 1200's from each other instead of adding them?
@5K Qs what say you? You're our resident mathematician. :)

Don't forget JohnDF. Of course, GT is older. :p By the way, those two had the most posts.

You two may not remember it, but you're smarter for it.:thumbsup:

That would be incorrect...
8 - X = 12 (Given)
- X = 4 (subtract 8 from both sides)
-1(X) = 4 (rewrite the negative X as negative 1 times X)
X = -4 (divide negative 1 on both sides)

In other words, subtracting -4 from 8 will give you 12.

8 - -4 = 12
Two minus (-) signs make a plus (+) sign
Therefore 8 + 4 = 12

Congratulations Half/Stop Half/Stop !!! YOU DA MAN, Ron!
Thanks Barrett for hosting such a generous, entertaining and at times challenging GAW.
Your lovely assistant's obvious excitement is such a joy to see it has made all our efforts worthwhile.

BTW Barrett, I'm approaching 2191.5 days as a forum member, do ya think if I were to provide a prize, you could design and facilitate a similar GAW for me? ;):D
Thanks to you once again my friend and to all who participated. :)

Guy in video claims 27 total facing up and down by size. He somehow gets a bunch more when he uses that Swahili to me "n" stuff, with the same number of little triangles.
I still don't understand how a person could have two bank accounts, each with a negative $1200 balance, combine the two (-1200 plus -1200) and wind up with $2400 to the good in the bank. That makes no cents to me.
(Yes. I got the test question "8-x=20" wrong. My answer was: "Impossible. That would be like going to the store with $8, spending all $8 and have $20 (plus the merchandise you bought) when you leave."

Edit: Is "Two negatives equal a positive." how governments and big corporations balance the books/budget?)
My Great Granny said "Two wrongs don't make a right" . I have what equates to dyslexia for numbers,I can't remember what its called. And honestly its self diagnosed based on research due to several difficulties I've always had woth numbers. The most prevalent is that when I hear a multi digit number spoken and go to write it down I'll almost always write the last number I hear first. I also do this with numbers in my own head I'll write down 85 instead of 58. The other is I transpose numbers in the center of four digit and larger numbers, so 1234 becomes 1324 when I write it down. So with those difficulties practical math is a challenge to say the least, so theoretical math and algebra is my worst nightmare, and actually had allot to do with my incredibly stupid decision to quit school in the 11th grade. When I said to a high school math teacher "I'll NEVER use algebra in the real world, because in the real world you get problems you have to find the answers to, not answers you have to make problems for" he said "Well I use algebra every day " and I aaid "Of course you do, you got a job TEACHING it." He says "I don't have a good answer to that argument, but you have to do it anyway " lol That being said doing carpentry work nowadays I use numbers and fractions for a living. Go figure....
