11" fighting bowie in bocote

Matthew, I won't be attending Blade. Hell, I'm definitely not attending Blade if it means you guys are going to be whacking my ass with sheathed (or unsheathed) knives - always the skinny guy that gets picked on, them someone starts crying...

FYTrig, I've almost given up getting a finish on this stuff. It's so oily, even my tried-and-true Permalyn wouldn't cure on it, even with a bit of heat!

I'm going to give it one more try with some clear Danish oil... if it doesn't go, I'll treat it the same way I would cocobolo - buff with a clean buff and call it a day!

Finally got around to making a sheath for this one... fought like hell to decide if it should be a complimentary color to the wood, but decided that there's just too much yellow there to make me happy, and tan wasn't cutting it. I think the full black brings out the dark tones and blacks in the wood.

Thanks for all the comments throughout this thread, everyone!

color aside, the shape of your sheath is excellent. Tres svelte.
black is ok I guess, but ya see I got this thing for natural waxed leather, but I'm a weirdo there's no denying it.
Great thread monsieur Gregory, I've learned some cool stuff here.

That is my favorite style of sheath for large blade. Can not tell you anything about the color combo, don't have good eye for that, but everything else is good. That design (do not know the proper terminology)around the edge of the sheath looks very nice. I would prefer different stud,...with wider head. Awesome work, knife and sheath.

ME TOO!!!!

Unfortunately, my skill with a lathe is nonexistent, and I can't find a good source for the marvelous big buttons you see gracing all the sheaths that guys with mad lathe skillz make. I guess this is something I should be focusing on...

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm thinking of offering this one for sale, so unless the buyer wants a strong-side sheath for a righty (which this is), I'll likely have to make another. Perhaps the customer will consider your natural waxed leather look, Lorien!

Matt great sheath and I like the color

I have a gunsmith that turns out great studs but they are rather pricey

Style, colour and execution of the sheath look real good to me Matt.

The best weapon is one's mind. I like your knife Matt.

I completely disagree, Jason. It's "kung fu stars." Period. :-)

Great thread. And, Matthew, I read one of your other posts talking about Cru-Forge V and you mentioned that it holds the 220 grit scratches really hard, but once you get those out, it finishes a bit easier. That helped. I'm going to make sure to finish the blades a bit better.

And I like your handle. All my personal knives have fairly straight, egg-shaped handles too...usually covered with deteriorating duct-tape and other goo.

If you do make another sheath, I'd hold a neutral (neither warm nor cool) dark chestnut brown color up against it and see what you think.

Matt,

I've meant to post since you started
this thread and congratulate you on a fine Bowie !

I waited and read as it got more informative.
Great thread.
Nice sheath.

Thanks !

Doug

i like the bowie as well as the sheath. I am more of a 'black micarta coffin handle" guy for a carry bowie, but wood sometimes gives a better grip. never underestimate a bowie. i also carry a pistol daily...but on my bech is my next EDC bowie prototype, with luck to be at home IWB in a day or two if i can get it finished and a sheath made.

Just posted this for sale here. Time to work on the next one, and let someone else enjoy it!

Thanks for everything, gang!
