12 Year Old Owning A Sebenza, What Do You Have To Say About That?

I'm 13 and I own a seb insingo and I admire the work that was put into making it. I use it every day basically and it's a real beauty. And it will probably last me the rest of my life then I can pass it in to my kid who will hopefully have my passion for knives:D and my parents didn't pay a dime

There might be other reasons.
i.e.: A parent (who happens to be into knives) buyes a special Sebenza to give it to his kid.
He plans to keep it for the XX b-day.
Then he realizes he wants to share his happiness right now - so he gives it to his kid at the next occasion.
Voila.

PS: There are many reasons to share now.

I'm sure he'll become spoiled rotten owning knives that many hard working adults can't afford to own.

My prediction is that he'll do an about change at about 14 or 15 and become a mall ninja first and then at 18 or 19 when he goes through that rebellious stage, he'll sell it or trade it for a large collection of Dork OPs & Mantis Knives and such. :D :p

Just because you would have wanted it doesn't mean it would have been good for you.

Not everything that is"nice" us good for you to have/eat/get/do/own.

I love my kid to death but there us just NO WAY he'd get a knife that expensive without at least sacrificing something for it.

Children need to learn that in order for you to get something you need to pay the price.

Sometimes the price is money. Sometimes it's time. Sometimes it's heartache. Sometimes it's character. There's always a price.

He has an expensive folding knife, so what?
He doesn't "appreciate" it? How can you tell?
I had "expensive" fountain pens and watches around that age.
Did I lose them/break them? Regularly.
Did I appreciate them? Oh yes. I know the pleasure of using a well made fountain pen, watch or knife, probably more so than a person who never had one.
How can you tell the difference between a Sebenza and an SRM 710 if you've never used/held both?
Probably half the Sebenzas ever made sit in a drawer and get taken out twice a year to be cleaned and ren-waxed.
Are all those collectors spoiled? My idea of quality isn't "price". The quality only truly reveals itself through being used.
I like quality items, but I like them to be used. All their scars and scratches should have stories to go with them.
I would hope the kid uses his Sebenza (and manages to keep it long enough to pass it to his kids).
Is the kid spoiled? Probably. Certainly "spoiled" for buying cheap Cr*p knives, after owning the Sebbie.
I no longer have any of the Parkers, Shaeffers and Mont Blancs I was given as a teen (lost/broken). Do I appreciate the difference between them and an Osmiroid?
Oh yes, and I appreciated the difference back then as well.

PS: The kid can't win. If he uses it, someone will say "he doesn't appreciate it, it should be stuck in a drawer as a collectors piece" If he don't use it someone will say" He doesn't appreciate it, look he never uses it".

I'd never say the kid shouldn've have one.

I'd say I'd not give my kid a $400 knife without him at least working/sacrificing for it. Nothing tastes better than when you've earned it.

That kid will probably never appreciate the wealth he has around him.

Says a lot about the parents though.

I think it's a little much for a 12 year old but if his parents can afford it i suppose it's ok. There could be some legal problems if he decides to carry it. I bought my daughter a car when she graduated high school. Does she appreciate it? No. Was I foolish? Probably. I wanted her to have something nice and safe to drive Now she has a job. So go figure. We all make mistakes and do what we think is best. Lucky kid is what I say and it's not for me to criticize.

A lot of kids are spoiled! I know a kid who just got a hummer h3 for his 15th birthday (doesn't have his license yet.).:barf: ya... I think I'd rather have a sebenza!

I got my sebenza a bit before I turned 15. I worked my ass off for that knife. I made a deal with my parents about a year before It was purchased, anything that had to be done I did it. Need help with something im here. You name it iv done it for that sebenza. Unlike most 15 year olds im not a lazy at all. Ask anyone that knows me. I still remember it like it was yesterday March 23rd. Around 6:45 on our way from MATS 2012, Took a detour and ended up at one stop knife shop. 15 minutes later I had my Small 21 "eyes" in my pocket.

This thread is one for which the oft used phrase "Haters gonna hate" seems oddly appropriate.

The kid likes knives and has a nice one. I fail to see the big deal.

Is a 12 year old who knows nothing about knives able to appreciate a Sebenza?

Obviously not...

But if his parents are willing to spend the cash, then doesn't really make much of a difference now does it.

Think the real question would be would you buy your twelve year old a Sebenza if he doesn't know anything about it?

I say it's the business of his parents. If they can afford it, and he can appreciate it, who cares? If I saw a 12 year old kid with a CRK instead of one of those cheapo mall knives that will break on a week, I'm high fiving that kid.

My kids are 10 and 12 yrs old. They each have a case and a Swiss army knife. If I could afford it, I would not buy them sebenzas. I feel that by doing so, I would rob them of the experience of discovering one. If they really get into knives they will buy and use many different brands. this experience will allow them to develop their own likes and dislikes. I will tell them to buy crks, striders, microtechs, kershaws, spydercos, etc. Will they listen? Probably not! Will they feel the joy of the experience of owning a sebenza? I hope so! I know that for me, the fact that I didn't own a sebenza until after I had owned hundreds of other knives made me appreciate it much much more!!!!

For me getting a Sebenza was about finding perfecting in all aspects of a knife. Can't really appreciate perfection until you've known imperfection. Well thats my opinion anyways...
