154CM Charcoal Dymondwood 110, pics

if they perform like my Alpha folders and Dorados w/ 154cm i'll be more then pleased. i'm generally happy with Buck's 420HC and have a few models in s30v but find the 154cm a great balance in the field of a bit better edge retention then 420HC without being much more difficult to hone or touch up.

i am also sad if 154cm is going away. love that steel on my alphas.

 This is why i can hardly wait for my 154CM 110 to arrive!! :D

Me being from Texas and all---The 1st thing I thought of when I saw the pictures was Black Gold--Texas Tea.. LOL Mine will be here Tuesday. Long 2 days.

Well put.

With three of these dark beauties on my desk just think how I feel. I couldn't have fallen into deeper cutlery clover!!

My tracking info says it's "out for delivery". I just hope the truck can make it up the hill in this blizzard. I went out for a drive earlier and saw six accidents, mostly with medium size trucks and city busses trying to make it up hills, spinning out of control and smacking other vehicles. My car is now safely parked for the duration until the roads clear. But I want my 2 Charcoal Dymondwood 110's!!!

If we're splitting hairs S30V is a better premium steel...quite right.
However, for me and most all the users on this board, the difference in performance is not readily noticable except for S30V being a tad more difficult to sharpen.

I agree with this. If this were the 60's and you had a knife with 154CM, people would think of it as a super space-age steel. Almost science fiction. Then compare it with the steels of the rest of human history and it is super!

I totally agree that progress in the last 10 years or so has been remarkable but incremental. If I could have nothing but ATS-34/154CM, I would not be unhappy at all, especially when heat treat and edge geometry are good, as they are with Buck blades.

However, according to Crucible, there is a pretty big difference between 154CM and CPM-154 (see the CPM datasheet that compares 154CM, CPM-154 and CPM-S30V, among others).

Interesting info, JNewell. Thanks for the link. The differences cited are I'm sure true. My and flatlander's observation refers to practical, everyday use for most likely users rather than laboratory technical testing or use in extreme situations.

My favorite user steel is S30V. But I won't hesitate using 154 CM.

I do agree...that's why I say there (just/merely) incremental, at least for most cutting done by most users (like me!). If things had never progressed beyond ATS-34, as mentioned, I really don't think I'd be unhappy at all.

The truck made it up the hill by the end of the day and my pair arrived. On one knife the dymondwood is almost completely black with just hints of the silvery "charcoal". The "154CM" stamp is half hidden by the bolster. On the other the dymondwood has a lot of the shimmery "charcoal" blending to black. The 154CM mark is all but completely hidden by the bolster. At first glance it looks old and weathered. I can't say I'm a huge fan of charcoal dymondwood, but one of these knives I'll put in my EDC rotation. The other I'll keep until there's some reason to take it out of the box. Lock-up, fit and finish, etc. is good on both.

I'm pleased with my purchase, but I'm happy with two and glad that I didn't spend money on more. S30V is my main steel. :)

Hoping mine is here soon, I got a notice it shipped on the 19th, but the UPS tracking shows it is still sitting in Spokane, WA since??????

Same here Bear:(-Ups says mine will be here monday the 29th and it has been my experience that it could be at my local DC for days and it wont get delivered until then:grumpy::mad:

Mine just updated. It went from Spokane on 11/18 to Hodgkins, IL on 11/22, nothing in between. I figure once it gets loaded on a trailer, regardless of where that trailer goes, gets dropped off, etc. until it get's unloaded and scanned nothing gets updated. Mine probably got unloaded in IL at a hub and reloaded to head to VA. During that process it was scanned and hence the update.

Probably the best $30 I've ever spent! :D

Wow, It's like waving a carrot in front of the horse;) I wont get mine until I have been gone to hunting camp for a few days and wont return home to see it for another 5:(

Agree, it's a great deal. BTW/FWIW, I got the shipping email on Sunday and the knife was delivered Monday (ID -> MA).

My tracking scenario as well.....but always worth the wait:thumbup:

Now those most recent photos show it off. That is a great looking knife.

What is "Diamondwood"? A trademark name for a generic wood?
