165OT Woodsman/UH Prospector ramble

Some day I'll get the picture posting ability and I'll quit using up everyone else's bandwidth.

Another few interesting snippets of 165OT trivia is that while the 165OT was introduced in the 1967, evidence suggests that it was sold earlier during 1966 and possibly as early as 1965. And it was not given the name "Woodsman" until 1974. This sounds like the work of Uncle Henry Baer.

The handle material went through name changes as well. When introduced on the 15OT in 1964, the term "Bone Meerschaum" was used, changed to "Meerschaum unbreakable plastic" in 1965. Later it bacame "Genuine Sawcut Delrin".

Edit: I have since come across records showing that the first 1,237 165OT's were indeed shipped in 1966.

Phil,
Thanks for posting the picts. They almost look cute (:barf: ) all together.
Must be the effect of being so close to one for 3 days now. I am hoping its only the stress from my daughters upcoming marriage but my hair has started falling out in larger clumps. The TV in this room has started to roll and has a large multi colored splotch on the side of the screen. I havent needed a light in the room for the past couple of days. Think my eyesight is improving too.
Oh one more thing, I left the 152OTO knife on a piece of photo paper left over from printing a bunch of certificates for another project and now the paper shows the outline of the knife.
Time for my pills.

IRV.......errrr, I mean Larry,

Could you please print my certificate of AUTHENTICITY on the page with the outline of the 152OTO? That would be waaaaay better than anything I ever got from Bulldog, SMKW, or any other well known, self respecting knife company.
Don't worry, I have a special tin hat to protect me from the glow.

Thank you so much,

bILl

Sorry, Bill, Larry has sent the new certificates to me and I am sending them ouit. I will stab yours with a Sharpfinger, if you like.
Phil

Thank you sooooooo much for your offer to perforate my....er, ah, certificate.
Upon further lengthy contemplation, and as much as I do like the Sharpfinger, do you think you could STICK IT, oh, I mean could you possibly use the World Famous "Unbloodied" Knife to stab my certificate? That would be kinda like first blood wouldn't it?

Chow,

Bill

You can always scan it and print it out on day-glo orange copy paper. A second scan and printover will put a sharpie in the background! Ohhhh! I like it!

Codger

Serious... here is Larry's work. Much better than my efforts. Nice glossy paper. It will come in an envelope to some of you who have already been sent your forum knife.
Now I don't wanna see any of these on ebay, guys.
Preparing for the last run of these at the engravers.

Also, I sent Spark (our host here at bfc) one of these knives in thanks for providing all of uswith this great forum. I don't know if he has had a secret yearning to
be one of the Lost Souls or not, but he is one now.

Well done, lrv!
A nice touch for sure.

I'm sure Spark will like his knife Phil. Maybe he'll even grant us a name change...... ;)

Bill

Codger,
I liked that scan idea so much I bought some orange copy paper and tried it......but now my Sharpfinger is stuck in my HP printer/copier/fax/scanner.
 :D

Bill

You simply need a larger Schrade blade to get it out. I might suggest the 165OT Woodsman, and if that doesn't work, there is always the Double Eagle Extreme Survival DBL2.

Codger

Does the DBL2 come in the trendy Orange handle??
Sounds like the one to use.....Hey, I bet I could even change the ink cartridges with that at the same time...KILLING two pieces of equipment with one "Stone"..... as it were..... :D

Bill

No need for the DBL2 just use some of the Don's
"agua de contraespanto" Not only will things look orange but it will print faster and you wont hear a thing.

Glad I could help with the certificates. 30 years of cutting and pasteing finally comes in handy. I'm a real hit at the preshcool.

I have never seen a DBL2O, but I suppose it is possible. An easier to find SP knife ( That is techie prattle for Special Purpose) is the orange handled Water Rat WR1 dive knife. It does have a prying tip, and it might just be more appropriate with the liberal pouring of "agua de contraespanto". Mike Nelson never had it so good!

Andy has one just for you! #7164399687 !!!!!

Codger,

Amazing how you could sneak in a John Wayne reference! No, no, wait........that was Lloyd Bridges.....doh! The Duke would never "water" anything down....not even with the much sought after "Agua de Contrespanto" from the grand old Botica.

Thanks for the link. I'm going out in the pool and practice holding my breath while prying barnacles off the bottom.....just in case I decide to bid on that orange handled beauty. I'm sure lARRY is waiting to snipe that one, however, knowing his penchant for orange handles...... :D

Bill

I am searching out a supply of orange Delrin that is rumored to have survived the "Bin divers" at Schrade. I wonder what Santa will bring some forum friends.

Sitting on the bottom of the pool is much easier with my compressor. No tanks to mess with, and clean fresh air to breathe for up to an hour and a half ( if no one monkeys with the intake filters). SO far, I only dive with my 897UH Signature Stockman, as pool sharks are pretty small. Wonder how it would look in orange?

Codger

Isn't that a lot of work to unbolt your compressor from the floor and haul it into the pool with you???

I have new found respect for your stamina.

I still don't think I would like a DBL2 with orange delrin handles.....

Bill

Well, it is a bit large for an EDC for those not living in Arizona. 11 1/4 inches of steel saw topped with a hammer, it is not exactly conducive to obscure carry. Adding the orange TPR might make for an interesting ride downtown. Perhaps you could etch the HP logo on it and pass yourself off as a computer repairman.

No, my little double lung compressor with a Honda motor is very portable, and uses a single scuba cylinder as a storage tank. I bought it off a broke shellfish diver when the market "tanked" a couple of years ago. I don't think I would try to use a tire inflator or shop compressor. Might blow your lungs out or suck down compressor oil.

When we attempt to assign dates to the production of Schrade knives, the easiest route is to use the dates they first appeared in company cataloge, and benchmarks like company name changes on the tangstamps. It is easy to make these assumptions, but not always correct. Schrade did, in fact sell patterns well in advance of publishing them in their sales catalogs and shortlines, and some they sold never appeared in either, though they were definately sold.

A case in point is a conversation I recently had with a gentleman who claimed to have bought his knife in 1965. While I never doubted his honesty and sincerity, I did doubt his memory since I "knew" the knife was introduced in 1967. The gentleman patiently recounted for me his purchase and the chronology of surrounding events, proving to my satisfaction that he did purchase the knife in at least late 1965 in a small hardware store in Kalamazoo, Michigan when he was a college student there. The knife bears the Walden tangstamp and a serial number very low, so it most likely was produced a year or more before the date that is commonly accepted as their introducion date.

Keep this in mind if you are looking for "firsties" and be sure to ask for provenance if the owner is the original owner. Sometimes the stories add a great deal of intrensic value to an otherwise ho-hum knife.

Interesting thread.
But back to the orange.. I got my 152OTO and I like it. I threaded a piece of paracord through the hole in the handle, naturally choosing orange. Particularly with a skinning knife, it's good to have a way to let go of it, while you tug and pull hide, but still have the blade at hand. Anyone need a section of this cord, let me know.
