18" Keffeler Sword (K18), AKA The KOD Piece

Also, I may have missed the memo on green Terotuf handle scales but may I ask why green? Is that you have come across a large batch of the TT on green, or just wanted something a bit different? It looks like OD green to me!
Because OD green is the bestest color:p

Wow, the Kayteen , K18, KODPiece, looks like a serious piece of work. I can’t say I like the look, nor do I have the disposable funds at this time, but I appreciate the work of Nathan and the CPK team.
I am looking forward to seeing some action shots when it rolls out.
Best of luck with the pre-sale.

I have a serious hunch that the CPK-Knucleheads alone will fulfill the minimum 50 x needed for cousin Nathan to reach that break-even point to start a production phase. Thereafter, we will have the overflow from other parts of this Site if the preorder thread is left open for a few extra days (one week max?).

Nathan as the old adage goes, careful what you may wish for ;)

I'm debating with myself if I want the back edge sharpened or not. I'm not going to be going on knife or death. I am going to be chopping lots of wood with it. Having a non-sharpened spine allows for fairly substantial safety improvement for many real-world use situations. I understand that this in a way a bit of a fantasy weapon, and having the extremely sharp spine is definitely a fantastic feature for its intended use, and I definitely see the appeal. I'm torn.

Thats why I'm thinking that I may be going for 2 x but I would like for Nathan to chime in with some pros & cons, altered specs if the top edge is left unsharpened, etc.

Mr. Carothers, would you please shine some more light?

If the top edge is left unsharpened, that top edge will be not-sharp.

I'd say go for the double edged. At any point thereafter, you can much more easily turn it into a single edge.

My reasoning is that if you decide to grind off the back edge, there's no concern about affecting the edge retention of D3V, due to the effect on the heat treat for that narrow zone you're turning into a spine.

The reverse, however, is more delicate (deciding to sharpen a non-sharpened spine, without overheating the fine edge, and thus losing the edge retention of D3V).

If local laws inhibit ownership of double edged blades, or you know for a fact, that you'll never have need or use for a thinner, preserved razor sharp edge (more obtuse edge for wood chopping, acute edge for brush/small limbs etc.?), then by all means, order it that way. Probably saves a few processing steps.

By my way of thinking, just looking at pure economic justification, 2 sharpened edges make complete sense. Think in terms of dollars per sharpened inch. This thing will have nominally 36" of sharp edge.

Stay with me here...

At $1175, that's $32.63 per inch.

Take the typical EDC at 3.5" and, let's say $300 for a knife. At that point you are $85.71 per inch.

The K18 with both edges sharp is the biggest bargain going. Let's not over think this (too late).

my two cents...
this piece is DESIGNED to be double edged, and I personally find it a teensy weensy insulting to the designer to request it any other way. Of course, I'm overly sensitive to these things, but I'm also an opinionated asshole so take all that how you will
:)
