1911 vs Glock

The obvious is to get both :D

The Glock is a no frills, just plain out works, handgun, period. Simply put, they work. As for an EDC, you want it to perform when you need it to (regardless of the situation and environment), and you need to be knowledgable, feel comfortable carrying it, and be able to hit what you are shooting at. Glock does this with superiority IMO. I own many Glock models and my EDC is a Glock 90% of the time.

The other 10% I carry a 1911. 1911's are great handguns and are legendary in there design and function. As far as ergos, trigger feel, and accuracy, the 1911 is far better IMO. Not to say the Glock isn't any of these because it is as well, just not to the extent that the 1911 is IMO. The 1911 just puts a big big smile on your face when you shoot it :D Everyone should have at least one 1911 if possible.

Few pics of my EDC's

Whatever you should choose, just be good with it! This lady will always stick to the 1911, a pistol I learned to shoot a very long time ago and have confidence in. Besides, how do you put Busse grips on a Glock?

Just kidding, really! Try them, get the one that fits you, then PRACTICE!

Hey Bapple, whats the kick like with the G-33? I have always wanted to try a .357 mag in a lighter, smaller frame...but I don't know if I could handle it!

Snwbrdr,

The G33 is a .357 sig, not magnum. .357 magnum is almost exclusively a revolver caliber, however there are a few autos in .357 magnum.

As for my G33, I changed out the recoil springs to 20# springs. Comes stock with 17# springs. Made a difference in felt recoil to me and lighten it up considerbly. Much less than any .40 cal Glock I have shot before. Feels like a 9mm now, to me at least, but with a nasty bark and light show :D

The sig .357 is what our NCSHP carry in the Glock version, very nice and effective round. Of course any round is effective if you get the placement right...

I carried the SW .357 during most of my 30 years of service, the last 2 years we had changed over to the M&P .40

Still going to get a 1911 .45, Daddy used one during WWII, he said that you could shoot a man in the palm of the hand and it would knock him down, good enough for me.

I have had Glocks for 20 years, carrying my G21 just about every day. It is a good shooting, reliable pistol. Recently I acquired a Sig GSR and took it the range. Shooting both my Glock 21 and the GSR using the same box of ammo and same target distance, the Glock shot a group of 8". Next the GSR, shot a group of 2.5 - 3 inches. After 200 rounds of switching between the two, I replaced the Glock 21 with a Kimber. This out-of-the box precision and accuracy was repeated with a couple of my buddies.

My Kimber is a full sized 1911 and I carry it comfortably in the small of back, IWB holster. The Glock 21 is just too big to carry comfortably.

Net result with my experience, the 1911 is more comfortable to carry concealed, more precise and just feels better in my grip than the Glock 21.

Not sure if the op is looking at other options, but if your looking for a great 9mm I have to recommend a cz75 or clone. I have had several over the years and have always been impressed with their reliability and accuracy. The ones I have owned have consistently been ridiculously accurate out of the box. My current one is a tanfoglia ta-90. I have no issue with glocks, I have just never taken the time to get familiar with one.

I look at the Glocks as AK-47 of hand guns – reliable and inexpensive enough for a big army.
But, I think an individuals could do better with HK’s, Cz’s and XD’s by Springfield.

I'm going to take a good look at the springfield xd line. It seems to me they should be as reliable as a glock, as their operation is similar. I appreciate all the help and comments, and i'm either going to get an xd or a springfield 1911.

Shoot one like this one---one time.... and..well you'll never look at a Glock or an XD the same way again for the rest.....of......your..........life. If you decide to get one it will cost you....money......and...time...that could be spent with your wife or girlfriend...and basically that whole relationship would be significantly less important and maybe over

I still love my G20 and G29

1911's are obviously more photogenic... ;) Like some knives are simply a lot more pleasing to the eye than others.
It's the absolutely last and least important factor in my gun buying decisions though. Half the weight, double the capacity, more reliable, more simple... This is not a criticism of the 1911, it's just a consequence of the fact that the designs are more than 70 years apart. It's a testament to the genius of Browning that the 1911 is essentially still a current gun and still a better gun than what the Dutch police have been carrying for the last 3 decades (Walther P5). Apparently it's not all that easy to improve, let alone outdo a design that originates from a time when airplanes looked like Da Vinci designed them. ;)

But Gaston Glock has done it. Taken the evolution of the pistol to the next level. It's the fuel-injected computer-managed turbocharged Ford Focus to the Ford model-T. :D It's taken the rest of the industry 20 years or more to catch up. But everyone is still free to go to work and on holidays in the car of their own choosing!

1911's aren't that complicated. They're fairly simple if you know how everything works and fits. I've completely taken apart several semi auto handguns without tutorials or manuals just by my knowlege of how the springs and levers work on a 1911.

And, under normal circumstances, you're not going to need an eighteen round double stack mag, unless you plan on laying down some serious cover fire. 8 rounds plus one in the chamber shoud be enough.

But... it's a personal preference and everyone is biased to one side or the other (can you tell? ;)). A 1911 is big, bulky, weighs a ton, but is reliable and accurate with plenty of firepower. A Glock is more concealable, light weight, cheaper, and has twice as many bullets.

It's just that I've never found a Glock that felt right, but a 1911 is a dream. It's the opposite for some people. Plus, I've seen way more pics of a Glock going kaboom than a 1911 :D.

Different strokes for different folks though, it's like Ford vs Chevy. Both are obviously tried and true and have proven their worthiness. But, I've never handled a Glock with a 3.5lb trigger :D;)

I like the 1911. I haven't bought a Glock yet mostly because it doesn't fit my hand so well and I don't like the trigger much; but I want to pick up one of those 10mm Glocks with the six inch aftermarket slide sometime. Fifteen rounds of 10mm out of a six inch barrel has it's appeal. :D

I have to admit, that is the one Glock I have been maybe possibly touching and feeling :o

Not the most artful picts but I am not an artsy guy... I have been away from the forum for awhile, the last time I was here was when I won the one of a kind Busse Fusion steel heart variant for the Himalayan Imports charity auction in auction and shortly thereafter helped Jerry recover some stolen property.

Anyhow, I love my G21 and my 1911s. I think firearms are really all about what works for you and smart is the man that can make 1 firearm fit all or even most occasions.

There is a lot to be said about the simplicity and reliability of the Glock21 and for me after decades of ownership to me the same can be said of the 1911.

At the end of the day they are both excellent combat handguns and both suffer the limitations that pistols have but, they make up those limitations with portability and availability. Unless you are in Tel Aviv it is kind of hard to walk around the civilized world with a long gun strapped to you.

You don't have to spend 6K on a Wilson or other custom to get a good 1911.

Just don't ever buy one where a shade tree armorer decided he or she needed to make the 1911 "better". Most horror stories revolve around improperly tweaked 1911s or bad magazines. Folks will spend a ton of cash on a custom 1911 and then buy surplus mags and wonder why it is not functioning properly.

I really don't see how someone can go wrong with either. And 45ACP is my personal preference and what I am most comfortable with.

This is absolutely the most civil Glock vs 1911 thread I have seen on the internetz. 4 pages and no war. Amazing. I knew there was a reason I remembered you all as being really nice folks. :)

I love my 1911's couple of Kimbers a tricked out Springfield full size, Glocks just don't do it for me, great guns but not for me, i have recently picked up a Springfield XD in 45 and a compact 9 and i'm very impressed with both of these, just my two cents worth.
