First SMKW does not have a great selection. They have a decent selection at best and I will put my selection up against theirs any day. In fact a lot of what they carry is pure CRAP. Yes they do have some name brands but the selection is spotty at best
If they sale "CRAP" why has SMKW been in business for 20 Years? Could it be because they carry a variety of "Affordable" knives. Most of you here it's all High End,High tech, custom Knives. Not everybody is looking to prove themselves by buying the biggest baddest knife they can. Some just need a good quality knife at a good price and that is what they (SMKW) do. So if that is CRAP then I will buy from them and for BFC I guess I'll become a Troll until something better comes along.

He said "a lot" of what they sell is crap, and quite frankly, it is. Flea Market knives are flea market knives, there's no arguing around it. As for "How can they stay open" selling it - when you get a knife for $1, and sell it for $19.00, you make a hell of a profit margin. Simple mathmatics - a lot of the "crap" makes a ton of cash without a lot of investment.

Yes, they do have some brand name products. Yes, the have improved their selection over the years.
However, thumb through the catalog and you'll easily see quite a few of the "junk" knives for sale, with high margins.

Have a nice day!

All I can say is that the owner of SMKW has never personally offered to take time out of his busy day to make inquiries through a number of distributors with whom he doesn't normally do business, to try and find for me a particular knife that he doesn't carry.

But the owner of 1SKS did, and that knife is now sitting on my desk at home.

I was going to leave my comments from before stand alone here in this thread but then I read "tom tom's" post.

Yes, SMKW does have a lot of good knives for sale. And I'm sure that most forumites have purchased from them at one time or another. But you can't deny that at least half of their products that they sell are "Pakastani Frost Cutlery rip-offs". That description, by the way, is NOT a compliment.

If you don't like 1SKS only because you like the fact that SMKW has been in business for twenty years then you may just be a little confused there son.

Also, IMHO, you've got one hell of a nerve to come here, use, & then abuse?!?!?!? What's up with that??????????
SoooooooooooSaaaaaaaaaaadddddddddd!!!!!!!!

If I was Mike or Spark I'd remove your ability to "troll". But that's just my opinion. Take it for what it's worth.

This has been bugging me for 24 hours now and I've got to say it.

First off, I want to apologize to SmokeyMountain - despite the baiting, I should have shown more tact; it's in poor taste to bash a competitor in any form, no matter what the circumstances.

Second, they've succeeded in their market, so their methods are without a doubt effective. We just use different methods, each side has it's advantages.

Third, I'm not removing anyone's priviledges over something like this - if we start banning people just for their opinions then where are we? Russia?

I have ordered a few things from SMKW. But you have to weigh the pros and cons.

Pros - Great prices on in-stock items
Cons - You have to call to see if they have the item-in stock. No MT!

Just my $0.02

Spark, I'm glad you clarified your comments. To be perfectly honest, comments like that make me reluctant to do business with 1SKS.

I'm not a big e-commerce kind of guy. I've found the best way not to be dissapointed with mail order service is to buy the stuff in person. However, with my current collecting interest being customs that is no longer possible. I choose dealers/ makers that present themselves and their products in a professional and courteous manner (I also have to like their stuff
smile.gif
). Act like a jerk or make caustic comments on BF or KF and I am not going to buy from you, period. Too many options out there.

That being said, I have no doubt that 1sks is a reputable dealer. The feedback you read reveals an occasional growing pain but overall there appears to be an honest commitment to providing good service. It's the occasional comment from its staff that has turned me off.

Can't speak to SMKW mail order service, never mail ordered from them. I've been to the store, mainly oriented to the case/ buck crowd, worth a visit if only to see a Walmart sized store devoted to cutlery. Nice people though.

Maybe with the new regime here I'll consider buying that surefire dominator I've been ogleing.

Spark,
Well said!!

Don't sweat your comments earlier. You & Mike seem to have invested alot into your company. You both take it personally when someone, who seemingly hasn't even dealt with you (1SKS) and then goes & posts insults without any real information to back them up. I see nothing wrong with your posts. I do, however, see that certain people will always take things for granted and will always be of a lesser caliber than others. This particular trait seems to really fire me up!!!!!!

--The Raptor--

P.S.-I knew you wouldn't ban him......I just wanted to say that I would. You're definately a better man that I. Also, more professional.

Wow - didn't think my little post would go this far. Thank you, Spark for setting things straight on the bb. I think I will stick around for a while and see what this place is all about.

As for loyalty to the company I spoke of earlier in this post, well - they still got me - the day before Spark set things straight, the webmaster at http://www.eknifeworks.com sent me a wonderful email - and cc'd it to Mike Turber
it read as follows:

Jack Iandowski,

I would like to apologize to you for the way you were treated after your
posting on Blade Forums. SMKW as a whole really appreciates you 'sticking
your neck' out for us and for showing your appreciation for our company. I
am sorry though for the responses you got and I hope that you will continue
to visit BFC in the future. They do have the best bulletin board on the
web for the knife enthusiast. They have some great discussions and are a
tremendous repository for knowledge. There are some wonderful people on
BFC so don't judge them by this experience.

Have a great day and continue shopping with us at eKnifeWorks.com

I will say that I have bought from 1sks several times. Yesterday I ordered as a matter of fact. As of today, my order is already half way here. I also helped to support this forum which is my second home.
smile.gif
I suggest that anyone who buys knives and related equipment check out 1sks. You can get knives, flashlights, gloves, handcuffs, batons, and more at excellent prices with the best service around. I also order from other dealers too. Mike payne, bayou lafourche, cummberland, triple aught, 2the hilt, etc... Just because there are other dealers do not mean they are any better or worse. I feel I should weigh all the pros and cons before making a purchase. Welcome to the forums Jax Yand. If you truly enjoy knives and related subjects, you will be quite happy here. If you are just trolling you will not last long..Either way have fun.

The first knife was probably used to cut stuff.

Way to go Spark. Dignity under pressure defines class and is the mark of a man. Taking a slap in the face to support the overall right to swing takes grit. Grit is good.
