Very cool, sounds like someone has a brain.
Don't kid yourself; those fools don't have brains. They were shamed into it due to bad publicity that eventually became worldwide. Their hired "spin doctors" told them to let the young student back into regular classes. Damage control, pure and simple.

I was just being polite. :)

How dare those liberals apply those No Child Left Behind rules across the board the way they're supposed to.

The crazy thing is that this is exactly what authoritarians want, across the political spectrum. It's the same thinking that bought us things like three strike laws, drug prohibition, sex laws, etc. Rather than allow circumstances dictate the reaction to any particular offense, like those wishy washy liberals always do, people want rules and punishments that are maniacally consistent. And then whine when little Johnny gets hammered down for bringing a pocketknife to school.

Furthermore, if you read the article, the zero tolerance policy was adopted because making discretionary allowances seemed to be subject to abuse. Despite how some of us may want to paint this as a clear cut issue, there is good reason the rules are the way the rules are. Unfortunately, injustices occur either way.

Like I said, want to complain? Look in the mirror.

Exactly which laws would those be? People always want to ignore the laws they don't like.

If you want to ignore unjust rules, feel free to do so. But don't be indignant when the rulemakers don't agree with your judgment. You make your case, and take your lumps like you should if your reasoning can't change minds.

Hopefully, in this case, the authorities will see the injustice in having a true zero tolerance rule, and will have the good judgment to mete out justice in a manner that is fair to all offenders, whether they've committed minor or major offenses.

So, you would argue that we need more government control, and less personal responsibility? I mean they've done such a bang-up job with social security, national debt, DMV, and economic bailouts, so let's have them control every aspect of our lives! (Oh, and I can  too.) It is a crutch for the administrators to have "zero tolerance" policies. They don't have to think. I thought it was supposed to be "by the people, for the people", but, instead, it is "in spite of the people". Next time you thank a soldier for your freedom, make a call to your congressman, to ask him/her what happened to it.

I attended the school district in the story K-12. To be fair I will say the district has taken a slight turn downhill and has seen a rise in drugs, fights and other crimes. I can understand the zero tolerance stance taken but do not agree with it. The high school in this district is very strict also but they see a good bit of crime. I do not know the family this story is about but I wish I did so I could congratulate them for not being a flock of sheeple.

I had a friend recently, in a neighboring district, take her kid to school (Kindergarden) with a cake. She brought a knife in to cut the cake and was treated as a criminal. I can't remember what the teacher told her in regards to how they were supposed to the cut cake but it made me laugh that one would be suprised that someone would bring in a knife to cut the cake they made.

It's truly remarkable where we are going as a society. I almost feel guilty for having a kid knowing he is going to grow up in this mess.... almost... :)

Back in the late 50s while in the 4th grade a guy in my class would trim his fingernails into points to better scratch you, my point is where there is a will there is a way.
I would think that intent would enter into the disscussion some where , yes he had a knife but what was he going to do with it, in the case of the birthbay cake knife intent would seem obvious.

Dear responsible Administrators

I just wanted to thank you for applying the zero tolerance policy as just that: zero tolerance. Schools are becoming increasingly dangerous, and I apluad you for taking these responsible steps to ensure safety all our young students. I know you guys are facing a lot of flack from just about everybody with a functioning brain (sadly I can not include you among their number). I think that it was perfectly reasonably to suspend a 6 year old for up to 45 days, for bringing in a SPORK, I mean he could have killed somebody, he could have held the whole class hostage, it could have been another Columbine had it not been for you guys I can hear the headlines now "42 students viciously spooned to death by 6 year old". It makes me proud, and helps me sleep at night knowing that our children are safe in sound in schools run by Fascist idiots.

I have a prediction your response will be something along the lines of:

"We're sorry that you feel that way but our policies have been enacted for a reason. We're responsible for the children's safety and educacion. In this particular case we have already reduced the punishment as the details have become more clear. Again, we're sorry about the way you feel about this issue and appreciate your concern and opinions"

I've been around this way a few times before, not this exact situation, but they always send out the same type of response. Send it to them and post their response.

Why does it seem that no matter how good a person you are, how much you try to help other people when they are in need and accept their differences, all of that hospitality and understanding is never returned?

I had a stupid lapse in judgment today, very simmilar to the topic of this article.
It is going to tarnish my otherwise polished record and I feel like a fool.

But most of all I forsee bad things for the future of our society.

I just saw your letter. you got it wrong. I don't believe it was a spork. It was a hobo knife, a SAK-style multiblade with fork, spoon, and knife blades.

Just for fun ...

I dug through my old knives and found a Colonial Camper. Same kind of knife. 3+1/2" with spoon, fork, knife, and can opener. I need to do a bit of cleanup on the knife blade but the other utensils are still shiny. :)

Does anyone here have a kid old enough to use this but young enough to get in trouble bringing it to school? :D First to post a picture of their kid who wants it, gets it! Post in this thread and I will mail it free to the winner!
