1st Spydie ever

I am terribly, love that damn hole. Opens like butter. I like the smaller knives. I was kinda digging the dragon fly I think it was called and the Chicago. I like smaller blades. Any suggestions I have about $100 I think I can secretly funnel towards my new hobby

I love my dragonfly but it is a little small for me to EDC alone but it can't be beat for a change pocket or bottom of pocket secondary and it is readily available in some great steels

Or for around $100 if you can find them In stock go for a manix 2 LW s110v (or BD-1) The lock is similar to a BM axis if your used to benchmades

The delica 4 also mentioned is an awesome knife also but without a choil it gets moved down the list for me.

ETA: If you like smaller blades go for the dragonfly.. You'll love it :)

Thanks guys for all the advice, I have had this Spydie for only a few hours I am hooked. I'm headed for the net to research. My next one I want to be almost a show blade. I'm reeling. Lol

This thread really has me laughing. My addiction started a few years ago......still hooked. Once you've been bit, you just can't quit :D I love my Spydies. Might as well get a Para 2, your gonna have one sooner or later. Sooner is better. If you really want the smaller blade the Delica or Caly 3 are both great knives. Be careful they get REALLY sharp, maka you bleed.

Here's what the smaller Delica 4 (mine has a broken tip, it's been beat to heck) and the UKPK Slipit look like side by side:

I become a kid at Christmas again when waiting on UPS. Even worse when I'm at work and I know it's at the house waiting for me. What if someone steals it? What if my wife gets home first:eek: The anticipation is one of the great joys of knife buying.

Omg I am so addicted, I just bought a caly 3.5 because of one your recommendations. What is going on here.? Lol. I hope I like it as much as the persistence. Someone educate me on my new acquisition? I am so in trouble with the wife!

My first Spyder was a blue Persistence. I have a SB Caly 3.5 in my pocket now, a year and a half and many purchases later. You moved decisively, well done ;)

I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I have around a dozen or so Spydercos and imo, the 3.5 is one of the best they make.

For smaller blades, I still like my Persistence, but I also have a cf Chaparral and the blue UKPK pictured above that see a lot of pocket time.

Thank you for your words of wisdom. I have carried some unique and expensive blades in my career. They are all now retired with my duty gear and the memories attached to those items are also retired. As stated before I had never handled a Spydie until today. I instantly fell in lust and lost my ever loving mind. I am so impressed. I can't see my caly being anymore sturdy than the persistence I am holding now. I can only assume, because of the price, the caly was made somewhere in the United States? Anyhow I am now really researching it. Any info you can give would be appreciated. I ordered the g-10 model with the VG - 10 blade. The clip looked a little cheap. Does it hold up well? I assume from the pics this is a lock back.

The caly is a great choice. It locks into your hand the same way the ukpk does! And its not overbuilt which is why I like it so much. Its a great regular edc blade!

VG10 is a solid user steel. But Spyderco does 8Cr13 about as good as anyone. It's the one brand thus far that I dont mind having several different models. There's bound to be several models that you will really like. From my experience with the tenacious line vs other Spydercos the Taiwan, US and Japan models are a little more refined in fitband finish than the China ones. After going roughly 40 sub $100 crkt, Kershaw, Benchmades, sog, Gerber, buck, boker etc...Spyderco remains my favorite brand. The designs just work.

I've had a Caly 3.5 in my pocket everyday for the last 2 years. One of my favorite Spydies. Soooo much blade in a relatively compact knife. Liking the smaller blades I thought you may have gone for the Caly 3. Both are GREAT knives.....classics. Might as well throw you wallet away, and make sure you beat your wife to the mailbox.

The caly 3.5 has some of the best ergonomics of any spyderco knife IMO. Fairly thin blade that makes a great edc and slicer. The knife carries really small for the amount of blade it gives you too. I hate to tell you this so soon after your first two purchases but you are going to have to buy a paramilitary 2 at some point. :)

You will also need:

Military
Yojimbo 2
Pacific Salt or Salt 1 in serrated edge
Dragonfly 2
Gayle Bradley folder
Chaparral
Sage

Ummm, the list goes on...and on. Enjoy your new knives for now. Theres plenty of time. ;)

I can't sleep so I have been researching the caly 3.5 and I found this in a review on Amazon. " Sal Glesser recently said this is the knife he currently carries for daily use; that says something coming from a man who could have his choice of ANY Spyderco ever produced." I find that simply the best advertising for a blade, the company owner carries it. I really can find only one iffy thing. Spyderco chose to rivet the handle. Not a bid fan, riveted handles seem to always come loose. Other than that one tiny aspect, I am stoked. Maybe why I'm up at 3 am typing this instead of laying in bed squeezing my wife! 🔪

I have only one Spyderco right now, an Ambitious. I love that little blade. Does a lot more than you would think for the size. Persistence is on my list, as is Junior, PM2 and Several others.

Good luck with your new addiction.

I have had the persistence about a day. Quality, fit, and finish are amazing for a knife in this price range. I loved it so much I ordered a $98.00 caly 3.5 on a recommendation. I'm a little concerned it is built with pins and not screws. Maybe someone on here will address this issue. Good luck with your ambitious. I'm hooked!

Not sure what your concern is about pins exactly? Honestly the only knife I ever needed to take apart was the Persistence (debris from tapping the liners for the clip holes got into the pivot. On the Caly you can still easily take out the pivot screw to remove the blade for cleaning if needed. I guess some may view it as a negative, but for me it's a non-issue.

I guess my concern is if they are sturdy. Some of the older cheaper pin knives became sloppy. I haven't owned a pinned knife since.

The pins won't matter. Between good old soap and water and compressed air I have never had to take a knife apart.

Enjoy your new knives, the Caly 3 in SB is on my short list of must haves.

Thanks man, sometimes old experiences linger. I can assume from your post they are sturdy. Thank you

To fuel your interest, Bradley folder (used to be Gayle Bradley) is not only beautiful and a show piece, it's super smooth compared to my Resilience (big brother of Persistence) and buld like a tank!

Not to mention it's a workhorse:
www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/714931-Gayle-Bradley-Hard-Use

If you like small blade, the Air is of the same steel and handle (CF) but with titanium liner! Light, gentlemanly and still a cardboard eater!

Welcome to the club!
