The knife arrived extremely sharp, easily shaving hair and paper. The blade has been Parkerized with no defects in the finish noted and is black in color. I requested that the handles be bead blasted for a better grip and I have to say I am pleased with the result! The hold is grippy and fits the hand even with heavy gloves. The forefinger cut out along with the thumb ramp really indexes the knife in the hand.
This is a heavy duty general user with plenty of body and heft to get the job done. With a quarter of an inch of A2 steel, pretty much everything is going to submit! I had no trouble working with the blade it stood up to my tests with confidence. If I were back in the service, I would highly recommend this knife to my fellow soldiers. I would also recommend this as a knife for anyone who is a hard user. Santino did a great job balancing thickness and point protection while keeping everything in balance.
It's not a pretty knife and would never be mistaken for a safe queen dilettante. This is a hard knife for hard work that keeps its edge long after you are done. It has enough mass to do some real damage when you use the butt end to crush and break things. Automotive glass doesn't stand a chance. It is also a useful knife, which is a rarity among many popular tactical blades. I was able to do some tests with cutting, carving and food prep and was delightfully surprised to see this knife perform well. You aren't going to thin slice your potatoes, but who cares? I like stews anyhow!
My only recommendation as to the knife would be to provide serrations in the thumb ramp.
The sheath isn't spectacular but the fact that you can rearrange the belt mount is. It also holds the knife securely which is of great importance. If you want, you can use a hot air gun to relax the hold, but I like the fact that you have to really tug to deploy this knife. Nobody is going to simply take it away from you, that is a certainty! And when you really need it, the adrenaline will make removal a breeze. Adjustments as to the carry position are easily made with a 3/32" hex wrench.
My only recommendation as to the sheath would be to change the sheath from a pouch design to one with grommets on both sides of the blade and a belt holder connected via four screws instead of two. This comes from experience with use of similar knives in a high intensity, hard use environment. Again, this is only a recommendation.
Note: Santino adds that he would have happily made the sheath this way had I requested it. This is an indicator of how involved the maker is with his products and how willing he is to accommodate requests.
My only real criteria for a knife of this type is that it be tough enough to get the job done, be sharp and keep that edge when I need it the most. This knife does that in spades. It ain't pretty, but then again, most jobs that a soldier has to do aren't pretty anyway. What this knife is, though, is a hardcore *useful* working knife that will be there and get the job done.
Santino, thank you for creating this knife. It is a heavy duty user which handles day to day chores with aplomb. It is heavy and ugly, and absolutely beautiful, warts and all.
