hey guys,

please help me out here: i'm looking for 2 knives (BUSSEs of course) for 2 purposes.

first one should be "small" enough to fit on my vest/plate carrier, as a SD knife:
-i was thinking of a Hell Razor, any other thoughts?
-is the razor too large for carry on a vest?

the second one is supposed to be more of a larger survival knife for my bugout bag:
-how about a Fusion Battle Mistress Combat Grade?
-is it a good chopper, and suitable as an all around survival knife?

those two also look great together i think, but i'm always open to other suggestions.

so please share your wisdom!

Just my opinion, but on the front of a vest I'd have thought that a lighter weight blade might be better. by SD (self defence? )

I think my SAR4 could fit a lot of bills.. not the longest blade.. but the Handle and blade shape lend itself very beneficially to Attack, Defence and that type of stuff. not overkill on the weight either..

SJTAc might be a bit more manageable.. but I could be wrong. or a batac

The Hell Razor has a 7 inch blade and is 12.5 OAL. Kind of big for chest carry, How about a BATAC 5 inch blade and 10.75 OAL? I think still may be pushing it in size.

For #2, the CG FBM is great blade for an all-around survival knife. Able to chop well, hella strong, and not so heavy like it's bigger cousins.

yeah i know, the HR is kinda big. i just LOVE its looks, probably gonna buy one anyhow :D
what would be the bigger cousin of the CG FBM?

those are both excellent blades, and two of my favorites.

the HR is a great versatile knife, but the SJTAC might be better for a military blade (being a bit lighter as it is) but still pretty close in size

nuclear meltdown FBM (NMFBM) is slightly bigger. also, there's the killa zilla

I prefer the basic 9 over the CGFBM. I might look at the new basic 11's but have not held one yet.
Never held a Hellrazor but it looks like a good one. BATAC is a very nice blade and I prefer it over the SAR4. The Boss Jack is something I would look at too. If it's for SD then I wouldn't mind a little extra length on the blade. So many choices!

HG55 for the vest would be good i think. 5.5" blade. I love that knife :)

a little beat up, but beautiful.

Same length: FBM LE, FFFBM (aka FFBM)
even longer: CG NMFBM, NMFBM LE (these are monster choppers, but heavy)

The lighter Bushwhacker Mistress might make a good all around knife, but gives up some on chopping ability compare to the CG FBM. If you would be dealing mainly with soft vegetation and softwoods, it might be OK. Cheaper, too.

and being heretical, there is the ESEE Junglas.

well what's actually the main difference between the nuclear meltdown FBM which is available in combat grade also (what does that mean in this context?) and the "normal" combat grade FBM, except for length?

I would consider the HR too big for vest carry but perfect for hip carry. You get a lot of knife for the weight in the HR. :)

The largest knife I would probably carry on a vest would be the Boss Jack (or Satin Jack) and even that is a bit on the large size. Have you considered the Boss Street for vest carry?

A three knife combo of (1) Boss Street, (2) Hellrazor, and (3) CGFBM would be ideal.

nothing really. for the most part:

NMFBMs are the longest of all BMs.

FFBMs are the thickest.

BWMs are the thinnest.

All three of those, and other variations of the BM, came in a CG version.

don't get hung up on "combat grade"... in Busse terms that's often more about the finish/options than having anything to do with durability or the like. The CG ones are usually the cheaper, coated versions - such as the CG BWMs vs the satin finish available on the BWM LEs.

the cgfbm has the cbt's, or corrugated bevel technology. its a series of grooves running the length of the blade parallel to the edge.

the nuclear meltdown treatment is the rounding of the spine all the way around the knife.

in general, combat grade means it will be coated, and is often a different thickness than the le version. usually thicker, but a few have been thinner than their cg counterparts.

As moritmotom has noted, the CG FBM is unique among the Mistress series for the lateral grooves, which serve to lighten the blade without comprising lateral strength. And they look cool. :D

The NMFBM is not just longer, but has a thicker convex grind. I love mine as a beast of a chopper, but it no kind of all-purpose knife.

For vest carry, I've considered a SAR4, SAR5, Boss Jack or a new CABS LE...

for the time being I use a Nimravus

well thoose grooves are what i really enjoy about the Hell Razor as well as the CG FBM. probably i'm gonna get those two anyway.

but what options do i have on handle material etc?

i'd like black (and sterile, if possible) blades, and those paracord handguards would be awesome, any idea where to get those?

i think mashed cat has the d-guards.

re the other options, these haven't been made in a while (aside from ganza and show offerings), but there was a wide range of handle and coating choices.

im sure there are quite a few blk/blk cbfbm's out there just waiting for you!!

HRs and CGFBMs have been offered in several coating/handle combinations, and I don't recall which. but as knowledgeable as many of the folks around here are - I wouldn't be surprised if someone can tell you/us which ones...

as far as black handles you'll want Black G10 or Black Paper Micarta. in grey-ish you'll want Black Canvas Micarta. if you want cord wrapped you'll probably have to do it yourself or have someone mod it for you.

I doubt you'll find a sterile CGFBM or HR, but there may be a couple out there. the vast majority of Busse blades have a logo, though sometimes you'll see modded ones where they've been sanded off.

i thought about the black-tan-G10 (at least i thought it was G10) which looked great!
G10 and paper micarta are equally durable i guess?

someone wrote something about the handles getting loose after chopping a while, due to the rivets? anyone else having those issues, or are the handles rock solid?

G10 is a bit more durable, and Black Paper looks nicer. It's a marginal difference in each case.

I've thrown my ASH at big trees and such maybe 200 times, and used it a bunch for a few years, including chopping a rusty old chain in half, and having the entire knife and handles beadblasted by a local shop (without removing the handles), and mine are as secure as the day they arrived.
