2006 Manufacturing to China continues

Now Ontario Knives has a line of knives from China -- the trend of American Knife manufacturers moving production overseas seems like a flood now.

Pretty soon, the only knives that will be American made will be expensive customs.

I am trying to buy American made Buck, Spyderco, Swamp Rat/Busse -- I also have Al Mar [Japan] and some Ontario [Taiwan manufactured Rat 1], but I am really concerned about these very inexpensive Chinese made blades from major manufacturers.

I guess all we can do is support those few talented American Bladesmiths that are left and also buy some 'quality' imports, when and where they exist.

Opinions?
:jerkit:

Are the Ontario imports a new line, or are some of their current products being switched to Chinese production? More importantly, is the import line easily distinguished?

I don't follow Ontario closely, but I'd like to accumulate a few of their Old Hickory kitchen knives.

I believe they are a new line, looks like knock-offs of Emerson La Griffe, and CS safe keeper or Columbia River bear claw, but much less expensive, have no idea of the steel

Hey Guys...

That does seem to be the trend these days Eh...

Our economy and way of life are going in implode because of it in a few short years...

What I don't understand is that they aren't even our friends, but Commies!!

I try my hardest not to buy products made there,, however it's getting increasingly more difficult to do....

Pretty soon the US will have a Saudi company directing China imports on US soil...

Holy Cow!!!

Not the brightest idea...

x2 what Normark said. I'm really disappointed to see this happening. Actually saw a perfect example of it in my hometown this week.

Old man here in Wasilla invented a wooden poopmoose. Lift it's tail, it dispenses a M&M (perhaps real moose nuggets if one were so malicously inclined?) Made a killin' inventin' the thing, sold like crazy, lotsa people wanted 'em. They were never my bag, but hey...gotta respect a guy making a buck with innovation and hardwork, right?

He just closed his doors this week. His patented "Poop Moose" was stolen and cloned by the Chinese, and is now being sold in Wal-Mart and Fred Meyer for half of what he was able to sell his for. Of course, they do break more often, but it's only $30.....

I'm curious to see how hard this trend is gonna come around and bite us in the a$$.

Oh knife content...howzis...."Don't buy from China...if you're that broke get an SAK, Opinel, or a Mora"

Them thars my words of wizdom.:D

Do any knife companies make all their stuff solely in the United States? If so, I'd like to start buying only from the ones that do this.

It's a shame that Benchmade, Spyderco, Buck, Kershaw, CRKT, and others all have some stuff made out of the country.

:(

Looks like they just slapped thier name on some master cutlery junk knives, thats all they are is master knives with diffrent handle material.

All the masters of defense knifes are made in the US arent they (yes I am a bit of a MOD fan)? I am an Aussie but most of like tactical knives from the USA, except for Fallkniven and Extrema Ratio which are good also.

is that the same one that was sold on QVC a couple of years back?

I wanted one of those, but never got it.

That'd be the one.

"In 1997, home shopping channel QVC featured the Poop Moose in a state special, then invited it back. Fenton's royalties were about $3 per moose, he said."

The inventor pretty much said the whole thing had run it's course anyways, but from all indications, the China ones were definitely the death knell.

BTW, if you still want one, there's still hundreds around. Google "poop moose wasilla" and you'll get plenty.

Oh, knife content.

I wonder if he ever used carving knives while making "Poop Moose"?:)

The irony for me is about 150-200 years ago, we bought most of North America from the American Indians for shiny beeds, cheap knives and trinkets. Flash forward to today and the Chinese are buying North America from us for...... mostly shiny beads, cheap knives and (electronic) trinkets.

don't forget Christmas lights and virtually everything else we buy, except groceries

I guess Buck and some of the other manufacturers are trying to make sure they have good quality control before they put their name on the product, but I haven't had enough nerve to part with the money to see if that is the case

It can be harder to buy American than you think. One day I was shopping for bluejeans and noticed that the Wrangler brand was made in Greensboro, North Carolina. I bought the Wrangler jeans instead of foreign-made Levis, and sent an e-mail to a cousin bragging that I was supporting American workers by buying American made bluejeans.

My cousin, who lives in North Carolina, quickly deflated my patriotic pride. She fired back an e-mail informing me that the textile factories in North Carolina are now almost exclusively staffed with illegal immigrants. So while the jeans were being made in N.C., the people making them were not Americans.

I've since resumed buying foreign-made Levis. If there is anything worse than outsourcing jobs to another country, it's bringing foreigners here to replace American workers.

FRS already pronounce China as currency manipulator last meeting as I understand. So this is not because China labor is cheaper, I bet it is actually wise wersa - productivity in US is very good, best in the world I think.

This is all because of unfair exchange rate for dollar which make anithing from China much cheaper. When exchange rate will be real I bet US goods will be actually cheaper then Chinese (which coming here over Pacific!).

For Example in Japan chinese staff is not cheaper then japanese - Japan carefuly protects their market from this kind of cheating.

Soon we will see some law, some sanctions or something based on FRS desidion and situation will turn back hopefully.

But so far I am not buying anithing made in China (if it is possible).

Thanks, Vassili.

Is the Ontario "Nick" neck knife one of the new Chi-Com offerings?
I was looking at one on KnifeCenter but passed as it doesn't mention what its made of. For $10 I imagine its 420 or lesser.

A lot of the seafood you see is farm raised in China (notice the big surge in tilapia lately? - mostly from China). A lot of durable produce items like whole garlic is imported from China, too. Sorry to burst your bubble.

The listing at knifecenter does identify this as Chinese Origin
