2006 Manufacturing to China continues

I don't see value in being a superpower. I see value in high standards of living. You can have that without being a superpower, so for all I care, we can become the new "little guy", as long as our people are living well. As I see it, if you lack the ability to go pushing people around, that prevents you from pushing people around.

It however doesn't stop people from pushing YOU around. Don't for a minute think that if the US wasn't a super power they rest of the world wouldn't be doing just that. As it is much of the world has built their economy up at our cost and with our help doing it for many decades. If our standard of living was very high, with an economy the size of the US's, and without being able to effectively defend that we would be at war in short order and this time on our own soil. Something I don't think apologists and pacifists like yourself are prepared to handle.

Also as far as the services thing goes... that can be outsoourced too as was mentioned. Beyond that services don't mean squat if EVERYONE is doing a service job. Once all the high paying service type jobs are otusourced what's left working at McDonalds? Try feeding your family on that.

If you want people to stop buying stuff made in China or elsewhere, the solution is very very simple. Make better stuff in the US and make it cheaper.

All this bitching about China is just sour grapes. People in China work hard because they want a better standard of living for themselves and their kids. They will work in manufacturing and engineering, something most of the brightests Americans won't do because theres more money and status as a doctor, lawyer or executive. If engineering and manufacturing paid as well as medicine or law, the US will have a very efficient manufacturing sector making high quality goods at low prices.

So stop bitching and change your own ways instead of saying its unfair the other team is winning because it works harder and smarter.

The "other team" is winning because of US corporate greed. The products made in the US are as good or better than those made in china. The problem is in china they pay a small fraction of what they pay a worker in the US. It has nothing to do with how hard they work, it's for how little they will work. Of course in the US you could not live on what they pay the chinese cheap labor and they get by all the environmental regulations and fines to boot. It's simply cheaper. Yet nobody wants any company trashing our environment so they go do it elsewhere. The manufacturing moving from the US to china isn't going there because they can do it better. It's because they will do it cheaper plain and simple. Better stuff can be made in the US but as long as companies can pay miniscule wages and skirt regulations and environmental laws and the like overseas that they can't here then the trend will continue.

Make it so US companies must pay US equivelant wages or higher at any oversees plant and so they have to obey US level environmental laws oversees and suddenly it wouldn't be cheaper any more. Eventually these people will wake up and want more money and the governments will eventually have to put an end to the pollution and dumping but until the companies will do what they do... try to make as much money as they can as fast as they can at the expense of all else...

A lot of interesting points of view here. Some quite outdated, some need to rise to a higher level of realistic thinkng.

I suggest you read a book called "The world is flat". Thomas L. Friedman. Facts to be digested and undertood that will modify your thinking.

First of all China is a very old country that has been through numerous governments over the past 5,000 years. The people work hard, love their children and seek better lives, as all of us do.

I have friends and business associates from all over the world. Honest, hard working people. Like everywhere, there are good people and "not so good" people. America included.

It would be very difficult in todays world economy to not purchase Chinese made product. If you like to buy American, great! do so whenever you can. But remember in this flatttening world, it is clouded. Phone calls to India, imigrant workers in America, Chnese production, etc.

"Reality is a firm, but honest teacher".

There are more people in China learning to speak English than there are people in America that speak English.

They Mfr (in cooperation with original mfrs) BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Honda, Toyota, Cadilac, Buick, etc. in China.

They are the third country in the world to put a person into space.

Are there problems with the current "Yuan" vs World currency, yes. Will it eventually balance, of course, in time.

Could some of the factory working conditions be improved? no doubt. Are they improving? no doubt. Many are pleased for the opportunity to work and earn. An opportunity that many parts of the world take for granted.

Ignorance is your enemy. Whatever the problem, education is the solution. Most countries see this. Quityerbitchin. Compete!

What's a commie?;)

Compete?

I want to elaborate but I like this forum.....
I'll hope this relieves some ignorance..
WHAAAAAHHHH MUHHHNEEEEEE ! ;) ;) ;) :grumpy:

I am annoyed at this too. Ill let it slide on something like a machete or my tomahawk from CS but for knives i think im going to have to stick to american made. Well maybe some japanese and german ones too, and occasional other well made foriegn knives but not american companies that move their production too cheap places.
Someone should make a website or something that is kept up to date on what companies are getting their knives made in taiwan/china. More pressure on companies to keep it amaerican and a way to keep buyers informed. I have some made in china knives i got as a present that... ill probably use as a prybar someday
