2008 Knifemakers Christmas Gift Exchange! (2nd Annual)

Hello all, I'm new here. I just stumbled on to your site.

I had set it in my mind this weekend that I would gather what I needed to make my first knife. I had been interested in making one for a few years now but I think that this gift exchange it a great idea and the perfect motivation I needed.

Only thing is I can't forge a blank from scratch yet, so I will have to start with something I can make into a blade and go from there.

So, I guess I'm in. I like a challenge.

Sorry guys :o, but my hunch is that no matter how the count shakes out, this is an odd bunch!

Soooo.....

Super busy lately, but plenty of time before Christmas......

Soooo....

Toss my name in the hat if it's an odd number at closing bell,,,,, catch ya next year if it's an even number, deal?

Kevin

Even's and odd's don't matter. An odd number of participants only matters when everyone makes for the person making for them.

The person you make for probably won't be the person making for you. We had 29 last year without a problem. My wife only had one time that she pulled the same name on the letter as the envelope address.

Kevin, Looks like you're in either way as it's a non issue. Make sure you send your contact info. -Phil

Welcome to our little group. I would like to make a suggestion though. Make two knives by Christmas and keep the first one for yourself. You can ask anybody here, that gave away or sold their first knife....they all wish they had the first one back. Give the second one away in the gift exchange.

I am moving forward on the gift exchange knife and thought I would share pictures of the next two stages.

This picture is of the dinosaur bone I am using after I have cut them to the approximate size needed. They will be ground with an 80 and a 200 grit diamond wheel to get to the correct length for fitting between the bolsters. If there are any internal flaws in the stone this is the stage that results in the slab fracturing like a piece of dropped glass. There is a lot of vibration caused in this grinding process.

This is a picture of the test fit. I am holding the knife in my left hand and taking the picture with my right hand. There is no adhesive on the slabs, they are fitted so tight I can turn the knife over in any direction and they will stay put. Don't let the line caused by the green tape on the bolster fool you, there will be no adhesive fill line!

The knife is taped to prevent me from cutting myself while handling knives with wet hands and push fitting stone...... The color is off as I am holding the stone up and it is being backlit by the work lights and sunlight from the window.

Yes, I am making a knife with pink dinosaur bone for the Christmas exchange... :D

Pink and canary yellow are the two rarest colors of dinosaur bone.

That is really special, I love the colour of that bone. That is going to look great.

Man this is going to get interesting when we post progress pics... the suspense of not knowing what might be your knife.

That's a good idea. Thanks for pointing that out.... that means that someone is going to get the better of the two knives, assuming I learned something with the first! :D

Where does one obtain dinosaur bone that wont turn to dust when worked? It looks super cool.

Welcome,Kryoclasm-keeping your first knife is a great idea, not only because its your first knife. You can also use it to take a look back and compare it to your more recent knives(note the plural-once you make the first one there's no turning back!!welcome to the addiction!!:D)

it seems some of you guys have already started your knives... I can't seem to decide what style to make let alone what materials to use-anyone else running into this problem?

Shawn

Im having the same problem, but i read earlier in this thread that makers make knives they would like to have for themselves. and after we get who were making our knife for, im gonna look at their website if they have one or their previous post, i wont make an exact copy, but possibly something similar with my style included......mabey.... i dont realy know at this point....

I was going to make a knife to what they like, but then decided to make a knife that everybody would like then put on a handle to their tastes.

Kyroclasm -

I get my dinosaur bone from several sources with barter trades for knives being the source of my best stone and contacts I have made through Ebay purchases of dinosaur bone being the 2nd best place. You do need lapidary equipment to cut and polish the petrified bone.

Yup. I have the same thing. It'll only be my second knife so I won't be doing anything complicated I think....thing is, even with simple things there's soo much choice.

I figure I'll wait untill I get the name....then I'll try to do some research on what they like. After that I'll get started.

We're up to 66 makers now. Anyone else? Welcome to Shawn Rickman, our newest maker to sign up.

Your humble,
Secret Santa ;)
