2008 Knifemakers Christmas Gift Exchange! (2nd Annual)

wow, this is getting big. I've got several ideas but I kinda want to wait until I know who I'm making for.

Scott, you gonna put an evil mark next to us few sinister folks?

I have finished the last step necessary before adhering the stone to the knife liners for the final grinding, sanding and polishing. I am going slowly as I intend to finish this knife as Redrummd #200.

Note how the pattern in the dinosaur bone carries over the top of the knife to tie both sides together....

The dinosaur bone was marked for the correct thickness to match up to the bolsters and then it went through the grinding, sanding and polishing. You can clearly see the dinosaur scale ends are now beveled and polished.

Since the scales made it through this last hand held grinding, sanding and polishing you know it is very solid stone. There is much less stress on the stone once it is properly adhered to the liners but I don't take anything for granted as the stone can still fail after being adhered to the liners.

Ok, I am making progress... on my HT Forge. ;)

Told you that I was new.

I'm still thinking of a general direction to go with the basic blade design, for sure it will be a fixed blade. The steel should be 108X but that might change depending on what I can get.

I'm leaning towards a bushcraft style blade. The first one will be simple and plain jane. The second one will be a bit more spiffy, I hope.

So, does anyone think a bushcraft knife would be a bad choice?

Thanks for any input.

The good thing about this exchange is that there are no bad choices. Just make what you like the best you can and thats what makes it fun.

looks good. Give yourself a bit of room in the materials for fudging. Take your time and let it happen :)

Me, I'm all for bushcraft blades. In the shop, in the kitchen, in the field....

Finally got a start last weekend-all forged roughly to shape and got the scale ground off-now i'm going out and work on it some more.....Pictures??? nah,I don't want to ruin the surprise:rolleyes::D

Im having the same problem, but i read earlier in this thread that makers make knives they would like to have for themselves. and after we get who were making our knife for, im gonna look at their website if they have one or their previous post, i wont make an exact copy, but possibly something similar with my style included......mabey.... i dont realy know at this point....

I will say for me I can make the ones I make. If you ge my name make me one of yours. LOL If you get my name dont even look at my site. Make me what you like I have been impressed with all of the knives shown on this site and will count myself fortunate to have one.

I AM IN!!
Scott, I just sent you an email from my work address (IDOM.com). This year (or at the beggining of the next year, someone is going to get a MADE IN SPAIN knife.

This is going to be fun. I have two knives 95% finished and one at 90%. A few more designs in mind and lot of leaf spring steel to chew on with my hand tools.

I will just open a new thread to post all the pictures I will be making during the process once I get it started.

Thanks Scott for making this happen,
Mikel

FWIW, this is probably more like the 5th annual... I organized a knife exchange here a few times back in... jeez... 1999-2001 or thereabouts. I don't think I can search it. It was always a fun event and you never knew what you were going to get, so the anticipation was fun. In fact, as I type this I have all three of my knives sitting right here on the desk.

I finished my Christmas exchange knife so the next step will be for someone to receive it. :D It is my 200th knife, Redrummd #200.

I think I will wait until just a few days before Christmas to send it though...

Here are a few pictures of the finished knife.

This really sounds like alot of fun. I'm intimidated, but this will force me to get off my ass and make a knife, so im seriously considering. Could i request i be paired with another new first time knife maker?

although would me being in Canada disqualify me?
