2008 Knifemakers Christmas Gift Exchange! (2nd Annual)

I have selected the materials I will be using and I will be taking some pictures along the way toward finishing the knife. I will need to do some creative photography to avoid the surprise ending but I thought it would be fun to share some pictures as I work on it.

The knife appears to be an older knife but it apparently was never sharpened. I got it from a collector and it was intended for use for my personal collection. It had bone scales that I have now removed. It is a slipjoint with a half stop.

So, the pictures are of the knife; the dinosaur bone and the 16 inch diamond saw I will use to do the initial cuts on the dinosaur bone.....

Now this is going to be really fun. I can't hardly wait to see what you come up with. Someone is going to be getting a very unique knife this Christmas. With dinosaur bone on it, it can't help but be a conversation piece.

I've got some small pieces of dinosaur bone that I purchased at a rock and gem shop in Portland, Oregon. I'm thinking I'm going to be asking to visit when I'm up your area to learn how to work the stuff. All I know is that the stuff is ()*&(^*&^ hard!

Here come a few posts of last years knives. Starting with.........A knife made by Dan Pierson and two in progess photos. One by Charles Shepherd and one by Eric Boese. I don't have photos of the finished knives that Mr. Shepherd and Mr. Boese made. Enjoy!

Here was the finished product. Had a lot of fun and will enjoy it even more this year!

Scott,I am retired and in my shop pretty much every day we are home which is most of the time. If you are going to be in the area you are welcome to stop in.......

You will be amazed at all of the equipment I use to do something that looks to be easy...

Looks easy my ass! I know how hard that kind of thing is to do in WOOD, let alone literally rock-hard, brittle, expensive minerals. I salute you sir!

I was actually surprised how inexpensively I got my dinosaur bone. I bought seven pieces for $3 each piece. Each piece was about 2" x 2" x 1/8".

I get most of the top end dino bone in barter trades for my knives.

It is near impossible to find AAA grade bone anywhere now but occasionally a piece shows up on an auction site. Most of what is listed on the auction site is just plain junk and not useable.....

Wow this is getting big. I have been looking forward to this from last year. I have already changed my mind about the knife I will make 3 or 4 times. This may make my under used brain explode:eek:

For all those who are just thinking about it. I would say DO IT. You will make a great knife because you know who it is going to another maker, and you get what promises to be an excellent knife made for you.

I'd like in. I'm definitely a new knifemaker and will do my best to make a beautiful knife, but can guarantee a beautiful sheath! :D
